Guests may attend an orientation to learn what New Frontiers is about, meet class facilitators, enjoy refreshments and enroll as a member. Members may also join in meeting facilitators and enjoying refreshments while connecting with NFLL friends. When: Friday January 17TH - 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Where: MCC Downtown Center 145 North Centennial Way, 4th Floor in Mesa Free Garage Parking: Signs will direct you to the 2 nd and 3 rd levels PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE RAMP BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND LEVELS. If you have friends you would like to share it with, send them our website address. Peggy Randolph and Beverly Dunson have done a beautiful job in putting the schedule together. Thank you! Thanks to Beth Towner who works with the ASU Emeritus College to ask retired professors to teach classes for NFLL; Shiela Millhollon who coordinates the facilitators for the guest speakers; Charlie Barry for being the Statistics Officer; Dot Meno our secretary; Lucille Houston the gifts officer; David Rodgers the inventory officer and Jean Bruno our open house class sign designer. Jean Stengel is the person who will be accepting the class proposal forms from now on. Remember the deadline for submitting proposals for the Fall Semester is July 1. A class proposal is needed for every single class even if you have been doing the class for years. Please list the date(s), the time(s) you want to present the class and your preference of where you want to have the class. Thanks Jean for accepting this important position. Sharen Kellogg is the coordinator for Under the Yellow Umbrella. Please send in your class proposals to her NO LATER THAN APRIL 15! We want to thank Howard C. Hargis, Marjorie Wingfield, and Liz Callahan for being willing to learn the VicNet system and input the data so all the information on the classes will be ready for us to register on Wednesday, January 22. An especially big thanks goes to Rose Frankfort for making the VicNet system possible for New Frontiers. We certainly appreciate all the facilitators who give of their time and expertise. All members of NFLL are encouraged to teach a class or facilitate for someone else. Look around you! What are some fun things you would like to learn? Find someone who will teach that class, fill out a class proposal form and submit it to Jean Stengel. Your input will make each semester exciting. Don t be shy please step forward to accept the position of Curriculum Committee Chair. Yes, one of you can do this most important position! If you are curious as to what the position involves, please go to our web site and read the "Job description." Just think, you will be the first one to see the new schedule of classes in print every semester!! Thank you Sharon Greer for agreeing to be the Curriculum Committee Co- Chair. Everyone needs to give a little to make this organization great. Thanks to all of you who participate in classes and events. We have enjoyed serving with you and getting to know you.

The social committee spent many volunteer hours planning the event and coordinating the day s activities. Making it all worthwhile, 107 members spent their money and time to attend and everyone brought tons of holiday spirit with them. Our entertainer, Igor Glenn, shared his multifaceted talent singing, playing many instruments, and making us laugh. Committee member Janice Overdorff donated two of her beautiful handmade quilts for a raffle. A generous total of $905 from the raffle, plus additional cash offerings, and several hundred pounds of nonperishable food were given to the United Food Bank in memory of Lou Petty. Lou passed away after a short illness during He was a dynamic contributor to many NFLL committees and activities. By Social Committee Pam Campbell Tribute to Rosemary Kohnke Rosemary was a cherished friend and New Frontiers Council member who co-chaired the Membership Committee in 2012 and She was a private person, working behind the scenes in her quiet, efficient way, always smiling and being helpful. Rosemary was with NFLL for two and a half years and will be missed by her NF friends who mourn her sudden passing. Please keep Rosemary and her family in your thoughts and prayers

4 Page 4 New Frontiers News Art Vision - Chihuly in the Gardens In November, the Art Vision class, toured Dale Chihuly's glass exhibition at the Desert Botanical Gardens. If you missed the tour, the exhibit will be on display through May 18. His glass sculptures are incredible! We were amazed at the sheer size of his pieces, not to mention his designs and use of color. One of the highlights of our visit was the video presentation showing how the glass sculptures are created. If you go, don't miss it. Dramas, comedies, musicals and dance performances all use the stage. NFLL members are able to attend performances of each of 3 plays each semester at student prices. Other performances can be attended, also. The website, can help you find performing arts events that NFLL members can attend at student prices. In addition to the plays stated in the NFLL Spring catalog, there will also be a Spring Dance Production taking place on March 20 th and 21 st at 7:30 p.m. and a production of Broadway Bound will be performed on May 2 nd at 7:30 p.m. to help the scholarship program. Are you interested in the behind-the-scenes workings of a theatre? NFLL members may volunteer to help in many areas within the drama department. 5 Tour ADOT Center Wednesday, January 22nd Tour the ADOT Traffic Operations Center. Located at 2302 West Durango Street in Phoenix, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) operates a Traffic Operations Center (TOC). The heart of that command center is "ITS" or Intelligent Transportation Systems. The ITS state-of-the-art computer systems, operating in conjunction with road sensor systems and various communications mechanisms, allows ADOT to provide both information and assistance to people driving in our state. ADOT monitors many roadways in the state over which it has jurisdiction, including Tucson and rural areas. The activities of the TOC are critical in the metro Phoenix area, where unparalleled growth has occurred over the past few decades. There is no cost to come see how it all works. Tentative plans are to meet at Dobson Campus at 9:15 a.m. for carpooling. More detailed information (campus meeting location and driving directions) will be e- mailed to members with authorization in January. Call or Lois Schaffer, event coordinator, for more information. Japanese Friendship Garden Thursday, March 20th A Japanese garden is a concentration of natural beauty, instilled within the confines of an enclosed space. It is not a "park" in our western sense, but rather where visitors may quietly reflect and seek harmony with the natural world and within themselves, a belief that is centuries old. The garden, a traditional strolling garden, located at 1125 North 3 rd Avenue, is operated in partnership with the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and the Sister City of Himeji, Japan. The docent-led tour takes about 1-1/2 hours and costs $7. We will meet near the garden entrance at 1:00 p.m. and enter as a group. You may drive yourself to Margaret Hance Park or take the Metro light rail to the Central & Roosevelt station and walk.3 mile to reach the garden (allow 1 hour from Mesa Sycamore station). Make your check payable to Helen Jones (see directory) and mail it to reach Helen no later than March 7 th. We must pay in advance so there will be no refunds after 3/7/14. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony is available for an additional $25 (maximum 9 people per ceremony). If interested in participating, please arrange it directly with the Japanese Friendship Garden prior to your visit. Spring Picnic Thursday, April 24th registration information, menu, cost and directions to the park. Save the date for our SPRING PICNIC on April 24, Mark your calendar now to save the date for this annual NFLL social event. We will return to the lovely Desert Breeze Park in Chandler. Check your March newsletter for complete details including The picnic check-in will start at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served around noon, outdoor games, door prizes, and activities will be available. Remember to set aside a book or two for the book exchange.
