4 Dan Burt was named head coach of the Duquesne women's basketball program on April 27, In just three years time, he has had unprecedented success in both the Atlantic 10 Conference as well as nationally. In his third season, Burt led Duquesne to a program record 28 wins and 13 Atlantic 10 Conference wins. The Dukes won their first-ever share of 1st place in the A-10 and also advanced to their first appearance in the finals at the A-10 Championship. For the first time in program history, the Dukes played in the NCAA Tournament, earning a #9 seed in the Bridgeport Region. Burt led Duquesne to its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in the First Round with a victory over #8 seed Seton Hall. The Dukes' magical season came to an end in the Second Round at the hands of National Champion UConn. In that game, Duquesne had two leads and earned nationwide respect for their performance. Additionally, Duquesne set a program record with a 15-game winning streak and had a 19-game home winning streak dating back to December of For the eighth straight year, Duquesne won 20 games - in just 22 contests. In Burt's second season as head coach - one that was touted by many as a rebuilding year, the team that was predicted to finish seventh in the Atlantic 10 Conference finished third, had one of the most successful years in program history recording the most league wins (12) in team history. Overall, the Dukes' 23 victories was the third-most for the program all-time. The non-conference season was highlighted by Duquesne being crowned champion of the Ball State Federal Credit Union Classic as well as defeating cross-town rival Pitt in The City Game. After dropping its first two home decisions to NCAA Tournament teams Princeton and Syracuse, Duquesne went on to win its next 12 at the A.J. Palumbo Center. During that streak, the Dukes won a single-season program-best eight straight Atlantic 10 Conference games. This season marked the first time Duquesne was undefeated in conference play at the Palumbo Center. For the seventh straight season, Duquesne won 20-ormore games (just one of 18 teams in NCAA Division I that has won 20-or-more games each year since the 2009 season). For the first time since 2006, the Dukes advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. Duquesne earned a #3 seed and a bye into the quarterfinal round, where whey defeated Rhode Island before falling to HEAD COACH DAN BURT conference runner-up and NCAA Elite Eight team Dayton. Despite having a top 50 RPI, the Dukes did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. However, they tied their best finish in the WNIT, advancing to the 3rd Round of the 64-team tournament defeating Youngstown State and Richmond before falling at tournament runner-up West Virginia. In his first season on the Bluff, Burt guided the Dukes to their sixth straight 20-win season. Duquesne played in the postseason for the sixth straight season, capping the year with a 2nd Round appearance in the WNIT. Burt became the first 1st year head coach to win 10 Atlantic 10 Conference games since The 10 wins tied Duquesne's second-best total since joining the league in The Dukes also set a then single-season team record with seven straight conference victories from Jan. 8 to Feb. 1, The winning steak culminated with Duquesne receiving three votes in the prestigious USA Today/Coaches Poll. One of just five NCAA Division I 1st year head coaches to win 20 games, Burt was named a finalist for the 2014 Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award, which honors a WBCA Division I head coach who has led his or her team to a successful season during his or her first year at the helm. A key component in Burt's coaching philosophy is player development. In his time at Duquesne, 11 of Burt's players have gone on to play professionally overseas. A native of nearby Washington, Pa., Burt came to Duquesne from Bucknell where he was an assistant for three seasons ( ). He was also an assistant for three seasons at both West Virginia ( ) and UNC Wilmington ( ). Burt is married to Kata Katanich-Burt, who received her MBA from Duquesne's Donahue Graduate School of Business. The couple have two sons - Soma and Milan. 38 ABOUT THE ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eightschool, men s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 Davidson, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, of Massachusetts, of Rhode Island, of Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph s, Saint Louis and Virginia Commonwealth. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP The 2017 A-10 Championship will feature a new, enhanced format, with six first-round games being played on campus sites before heading to Richmond, Friday through Sunday, for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye, with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 for the first round. The first round will take place on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the weekend of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final. In 2017 the first round will be Feb with the three final rounds being played March 3-5. ATLANTIC 10 PRESEASON POLL 1.
