4 behind the scenes Welcome to WCTE s New Downtown Space 4 WCTE Close-Up

5 A warm welcome to WCTE visitors from Sonja Higgenbotham, Membership Manager. The Old Bank Building. It s been a long road to 229 East Broad Street. For over 30 years, WCTE s offices have been tucked away in Tucker Stadium on Cookeville s Tech campus. The close relationship between the university and the station has grown even stronger through the years and continues to flourish. WCTE couldn t wish for a better friend, supporter and partner. Often people perceive the station as an affiliate of the university because of WCTE s campus location, when in reality the Upper Cumberland PBS station is a community licensee. CEO and President Becky Magura wanted a visible presence in the community to reflect the fact that WCTE belonged to the people of the region. Out of sight is out of mind and Becky determined that WCTE needed a prominent location, at least for its business offices. Becky and her staff started a search that would last years. There were a number of leads over that time but there is a long needs list for a TV station with a modest budget. For one reason or another, the leads did not pan out. That is until Becky met with Brian Maffett, who, with his wife Jenny, owns what is often referred to as the Old Bank building located on the corner of Broad and Jefferson on Cookeville s Square. Brian and Jenny were willing to help Becky s vision become reality, and in early 2013, WCTE s Development Group was able to move out of the stadium and into a new home at 229 Broad Street. It s great having WCTE in the building, commented Brian. The station is such a valuable asset. They are so involved with the happenings around the community and the surrounding region. Their prestige adds to the building and the other tenants here at Arcade Properties. Achieving the Right Look While the control room, main studio and production facilities continue to reside on TTU s campus, the new space has a welcoming lobby and small studio, with business offices and a conference room upstairs. With design consultation from Ellie Lenhart and Whitney Lane, the station hired Derek Crawford and Mike Clark to do the remodeling. Derek and Mike have been in business as C&C Construction for almost two-and-a-half years and have worked in construction-related industries their whole careers. Mike s specialty is woodwork and Derek s is metal, but they ve had experience doing a little bit of everything. When it comes to remodeling, together they can pretty much do it all. On this job, we had to give WCTE s lobby an industrial look, commented Derek. They were partial to the look of steel beams across the ceiling. But in old buildings, you have to be careful. The structure wouldn t support real steel beams across the ceiling so we made wooden beams that look like steel. It s the people that make our work interesting, said the ever-amiable Mike. Many of the people we work for become dear friends. On this project, we mostly worked with Avery Owens (WCTE s sales manager). She was the project manager. We ve even remodeled a couple of bathrooms in her house since then. An example of Derek s metal work is the steel sign that he created and donated to the station. He enjoys creating artwork, sculptures and railings. A self-taught metal craftsman, Derek made a freehand stencil of the WCTE logo and cut it out. The initials on the corner of the sign stand for Designed by Derek. Having this opportunity to be downtown has been great for WCTE on so many levels, enthused WCTE s Avery Owens. We are able to be more accessible to our viewers and members as well as offer some new work space for our business offices. The overwhelming support that we have received from the community in our new space has been a joy and very refreshing. Thanks to everybody that made our new downtown space possible. A special thanks goes out to: Whitney Lane and Ellie Lenhart of Lenhart Design Company Ciphertek C&C Construction (Derek and Mike) Brian Maffett (Arcade Properties) Acme Industrial Thinking Derek Crawford (left) and Mike Clark (right) holding the sign Derek created and donated to WCTE. 8 spotlight on Photographer s Profile Tom Glynn Tom Glynn has an ongoing love affair with photography that has spanned almost 50 years. While necessity has led him on other career paths over the years, he has remained devoted to photography, always finding a way to incorporate his passion into his life and career. The love affair began when he became involved in retouching and restoring photos. Those were the days of film, and retouching meant using brushes and special inks. It was agonizingly tedious and detailed work, but Tom learned a lot by closely studying the photos he was restoring. He soon realized that he could take better photos than many of the photographers whose work he was enhancing. While he shoots special events and weddings, Tom s true passion is photojournalism. You can often see his work in Celebrations magazine and the Jackson County Sentinel. He was also a contributing photographer to the WCTE production, Discover the Upper Cumberland. To see more of Tom s photos, go to dodsonbranchgraphics.com. You can contact Tom at tglynn01@yahoo.com or call (931) WCTE Close-Up

22 great programs Jeff Bridges performs with his band. Photos courtesy KLRU-TV/Austin City Limits. Photos by Scott Newton. Miranda Lambert Willie Nelson Austin City Limits (ACL) is the longestrunning music program in television history, the only television show to have been awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts, and was recently recognized by Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential music programs of all time. It s a show that s presented a huge variety of musical styles and genres, hosting everyone from Willie Nelson to BB King to Foo Fighters, and a show that s been enshrined as a Rock & Roll Landmark in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The pilot was shot in Austin, TX on October 14, 1974, and starred Willie Nelson, who was not yet the iconographic n music figure he would become. The show was pitched to PBS as part of its 1975 pledge drive. The pilot s success as a fundraiser was enough for ACL to be green-lighted as a series, and the odyssey began. Saturdays, 10PM 11PM Showcasing Great Music, No Limits Since 1975 The Musical Dude Abides Widely recognized for his talent on the big screen, Jeff Bridges took the stage to demonstrate his country-inspired songwriting skills. The Dude (a nickname picked up from his role in the 1998 hit movie The Big Lebowski) showed fans a different side of himself when he released his self-titled CD in 2011 and with his appearance on ACL. The 63- year-old Bridges fell in love with playing the guitar at 13 years old and thought he might pursue a career in music. His father Lloyd had different ideas. Lloyd loved acting and he strongly encouraged his boys, Bo and Jeff, to pursue an acting career. In 1971, Jeff landed a role in the movie The Last Picture Show, and his acting career took off. Once in a while in his acting career, he was able to bring his love of music into movies like The Fabulous Baker Boys in 1989 and Crazy Heart (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor) in After doing two movies back-to-back, Tron Legacy and True Grit, Bridges got a little tired of the movie deal and I had a bunch of tunes I wanted to make an album. I figured with the success of Crazy Heart, it was a pretty good time to do that. You can see Jeff Bridges perform some of his tunes following Miranda Lambert on July 13. For interviews with the musicians who perform on ACL, including Jeff Bridges, plus news, photo galleries and more, go to On the ACL Stage in July/August July 13 - Showcasing the best in modern country with Miranda Lambert and Jeff Bridges. July 20 - Country superstar Tim McGraw takes the ACL stage with his greatest hits and new material. July 27 - Fresh and seasoned indie rock with the Head and the Heart and Gomez. August 24 - Modern rock band Wilco returns to ACL with tunes from its LP The Whole Love. August 31 - Contemporary folk rock takes the stage with Mumford & Sons and Flogging Molly. 22 WCTE Close-Up
