3 2004 Men s Preview In senior captain Beau Gibson and senior captain Dave Pomeroy, the men s skiing team has a solid foundation and great collection of returning talent. Gibson, who was a USCSA All- America selection last year looks to once again be among the leaders of the pack while Pomeroy brings tremendous success as well. Gibson, who is arguably the best skier on the league, is also one of the top skiers on the East Coast, and will spend a lot of time qualifying for NCAA competitions. The pair combine to make up what coach Ken Thoman looks at as the core of the team. Senior captain Beau Gibson Thoman has also been very impressed at how the rest of the team is shaping up for the 2004 season, citing not only a solid practices, but the attitude of everyone off the slopes as well. The whole team has been really supportive of each other, said Thoman. Team morale has also been really high. The future of the team looks good too, with the addition of freshman like Rush Hawkins and returning sophomore Pat Bachant. Hawkins, whose father Jim raced for coach Bill MacConnell in the early 1970s, has exploded onto the skiing scene. In addition, the training program put in place by the UMass strength and conditioning staff including Chris Boyko has really benefitted the team. There is also a sense of camaraderie with this group. They really feed off each other and help motivate each other, which you don t see much of in skiing. Being such an individualistic sport, some teams are downright cut throat towards each other, but not at UMass. The way they propel each other to ski faster is unbelievable, said Thoman. They are mature as people and understand what s going on with the program both on and off the slope. Its something you don t find very often on ski teams. The team has specific goals for the season as well. The first thing you want to do is win, said Thoman. It may sound like an easy accomplishment, but transferring this ideal of how to win, Senior captain David Pomeroy and the mentality to win, over to the kids, is something Thoman really wants to get across to people. While the team has been successful over the years in the MacConnell Division of the Eastern College Ski Conference (ECSC) and at the USCSA championships, Thoman wants to win at the NCAA level. He wants to develop the program into an NCAA competitor as well. Consistency is our biggest goal with both teams, said Thoman. We want to send skiers to NCAA Nationals, first as individuals, then as a team. He chuckles at the thought of placing a skier on the U.S. Ski Team and admits that might come down the road, but the thought has definitely crossed his mind. With the group assembled this year, who knows what might happen Men s Final Results Jan Jan Feb. 1-2 Feb. 8-9 Feb. 14 Feb. 15 Feb Feb Mar. 3-8 Plymouth Boston Colby- NCAA USCSA USCSA UMass State Brown College Sawyer St. Anslem Regionals Regionals Nationals Player (g.s. only) (slalom only) Patrick Bachant 52 / / / DNF DNF / / - 18 / - / - Nathan Bar r - / - 42 / DNF 56 / 49 - / / - - / - - / - Kevin Collins 36 / 47 DNF / DNF 3 / 40 - / / - - / - - / - Marc Epstein 30 / / / 41 DNF / DNF - / - - / - - / - Beau Gibson 45 / 1 2 / 2 1 / 1 1 / / 27 3 / 1 7 / 5 Jon Gray 43 / 23 - / - - / - DNF / / - - / - - / - Patrick Kelly 40 / 53 - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Nick Kulkarni 29 / 17 - / - - / - DNF / DNF 17 DNF DNF / / 15 / 16 Nicholas Nacca 16 / 34 5 / 3 4 / 4 25 / / - - / - - / - Chris Pomeroy 17 / 14 - / - - / - 30 / DNF / 47 - / 17 - / 45 David Pomeroy 65 / 4 36 / / DNF 11 / / / 6 / DNF Jay Robbins 24 / / / - 18 / DNF 37 / DNF 16 / 56 / 44 Gidon Silverstein 50 / 37 - / - - / - 33 / DNF DNF DNF - / - - / - - / - Patrick Sweeney DQF / DNF 17 / DNF 25 / 20 - / / - - / - - / - Overall Team Finish 4 / 2 3 / 1 2 / 1 4 / / 9 3 / 2 7 / 5 NOTE: The first score indicates place in the slalom event. 4 2004 Women s Preview On the women s side, the team could be categorized as young, but talented. With nine of the 12 members freshman and sophomores, one might think this group is a year away winning any championship. But last year s USCSA championship in Truckee, Calif., proved that anything is possible. The truth is that this is a new season with new expectations, and the women are looking toward the future with earnest. Obviously we want to repeat the success of last year, but we have a new generation of skiers coming in, said head coach Ken Thoman. The success of the team last year, with all its accolades and awards should certainly fuel the women to compete toward an NCAA title as well. You have to think the prominence of an NCAA showing would be that much more impressive, compared to what the team has done in the past. Senior captain Kelly Early and sophomore captain Erica Mains will each help lead the Minutewomen in And while Early has solid contributions on the slopes, her impact on the team is felt even more outside of her boots and bindings. Thoman put it simply, Kelly and Erica get stuff done. In terms of scheduling and keeping on top of the day-to-day aspects of the program, there aren t many better according to Thoman, including Early who is a great captain. Mains is becoming a good skier too and an asset for the program. Without the two of them, Thoman does not think there s a chance he would be able to do it all by himself. Senior captain Kelly Early With the new generation coming in, Thoman wants the team to learn how to ski fast. We re getting kids from great academies, both educationally and athletically, he said, and it has really impacted what we ve done already. He stresses there is always a desire have local in-state skiers as well, but getting kids from ski academies must be part of the program. The academy kids bring experience and come to ski, said Thoman. He doesn t want people who are here to play, just people who want to ski. Sophomore captain Erica Mains Thoman might have found a winner in freshman Ashley Maxfield. She brings us to a whole other level of women s skiing that we haven t had before, said Thoman. She is still a little raw, but she s easy to coach and we can make her faster, which should help her out. She definitely has the promise to have a good year, and overall, we have the foundations for a successful year Women s Final Results Jan Jan Feb. 1-2 Feb. 8-9 Feb. 15 Feb. 16 Feb Feb Mar. 3-8 Plymouth Boston Colby- NCAA USCSA USCSA UMass State Brown College Sawyer St. Anslem Regionals Regionals Nationals Player (g.s. only) (slalom only) Shaleighne Collins 14 / DNF DNF / / DNF 22 / DNF / - / 18 - / DNF Kerry Divine 32 / / DNF 56 / / / - - / - - / - Caitlin Doughty 23 / 2 DNF / DNF 3 / 40 DNF / 11 5 DNF 51 / DNF - / 6 DNF / 12 Kelly Early 33 / / / / / - - / - - / - Alison Fischer 28 / / / / / - - / - - / - Kathryn Grogan - / - - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Kate Johnson 57 / 55 - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Candice Kelly 48 / 47 - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Carolyn Lewenber g 1 / 4 5 / 3 4 / 4 9 / / 34 1 / 3 5 / 7 Samantha Lewenber g 25 / DQF - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Molly Lyon 6 / / / DNF 11 / DNF / DNF 12 / / 11 Erica Mains 41 / / / - - / / - - / - - / - Angela Nichols 43 / 46 - / - - / - - / / - - / - - / - Lisbet Rauh 19 / / DNF 25 / / DNF / / - 25 / - Nikki Smith DNF / 1 19 / 1 24 / 2 10 / DNF 6 DNF DNF / 32 9 / 1 9 / 3 Overall Team Finish 1 / 1 4 / 1 1 / 2 3 / / 9 1 / 1 3 / 1 NOTE: The first score indicates place in the slalom event.
