2 2006 UMass Skiing UMass Skiing TEAM INFORMATION Justin ROULEAU Head Coach Massachusetts 98 Justin Rouleau enters his first season at UMass as the men s and women s skiing head coach. Rouleau, who received his B.A. from Massachusetts in 1998 as well as his secondary teaching certificate, comes back to his alma mater after spending the season at Harvard University. I could not be more pleased that Justin has joined our staff full time, said John McCutcheon, UMass Athletics Director. This will open new doors for our ski program at UMass, allowing us to develop the program to a level that will provide a better and more rewarding experience for our student athletes. Prior to his time at Harvard, Rouleau was a visiting English professor at Tomsk Polytechnic in Siberia, Russia in He also spent time at Mount Mansfield Winter Academy in Stowe, Vt. From Rouleau coached secondary-school-aged students in modern alpine ski-racing, while also teaching French and English. He served as a coach at UMass while still competing as an undergrad, helping the Minutemen to fourth and fifth place finishes in the NCAS standings. Individually, he had consistent top-10 finishes in the league and top- 25 finishes at the National Championships. 3 2006 UMass Skiing Women s SEASON PREVIEW The Minutewomen enter the season as the reigning ECSC Regional Champions. Last season s title was the second Regional Championship in three years for the UMass women skiiers. They last won the Eastern Regional Crown in 2003, which was also the season in which the Minutewomen captured the women s skiing National Championship. The 2006 squad looks to continue the trend of recent dominance regionally and will hope to return to the national prominence they garnered two years ago. The Minutewomen will be lead by a trifecta of top caliber skiiers with sophomore Eliza Hawkins and seniors Lisbet Rauh and Caitlin Doughty. Hawkins begins the season as the current fastest woman skiier in both UMass conference and division. She is also currently ranked number one in the region. Eliza won the giant slalom event and placed third in the slalom event at the ECSC Regionals as a freshman last season to lead the Minutewomen to their Regional title. She also won the league last year taking first-place in the giant slalom and third in the slalom. After accomplishing such great feats as a freshman, Head Caitlin Doughty Coach Justin Rouleau believes there is no limit on what Hawkins can accomplish both this season and over the course of her collegiate career. Shay Collins Supporting Hawkins this season will be Rauh and Doughty along with two more seniors Erica Mains and Shaleighne Collins, all of whom are holdovers from the 2003 National Championship team. Rauh and Doughty consistently finished among the leaders last year provided the Minutewomen with a great trio of elite skiiers. Coach Rouleau believes that they will be extremely valuable assests to the Minutewomen cause this season as both look to cap outstanding careers with their best seasons yet as seniors. Mains enters the year with an added role as she will serve as a coaching assistant in addition to competeing for the Minutewomen. She will look to continue to be a steady performer for UMass. Along with Mains, Collins has been a consistent force on the slopes. Entering her fourth year on the team, Coach Rouleau has high hopes for her contributions. Overall, the Minutewomen expect to continue to be the East s best skiing unit and will strive for another National Championship Women s Results Jan Jan Jan. 31-Feb. 1 Fed. 7-8 Feb. 14 Feb. 15 Feb Mar. 12 Player UMass Plymouth MIT & Boston Colby-Sawyer St. Anslem ECSC USCSA State Brown College (GS only) (SL only) Regional National Shaleigh Collins 22 / / / / DQ 16 / 31 / 51 Kerry Devine 38 / / / DNF 37 / /- - / - Caitlin Doughty 15 / 14 DNF / 4 DNF / / / 34 / 14 Eliza Hawkins 2 / 1 DNF / 1 6 / 2 1 / / 1 10 / DNF Erica Mains 37 / / / T 17 T 25 / 28 T / / 31 Jen Moureau - / - - / - - / - - / / - - / - Angela Nichols 48 / / / / /- - / - Lisbet Rauh 19 / DNF 11 / 8 DNF / 8 21 / / / DNF Danielle Vinton - / / / / /- - / - Note: The first score indicates place in the slalom event. Hawkins won both the slalom and giant slalom crowns, becoming the first American skier in 10 years to sweep both events. The UMass men s third place finish last season was the best performance in school history. UMass will look to continue its winning ways in 2006 as the most successful UMass sport program in recent years. The Minutemen have won the last two Eastern Regional Championships and hope to make it a third under the direction of new Head Coach Justin Rouleau, a former UMass skier who graduated in Proving that it will take a team effort to repeat as Eastern Regional Champions, Coach Rouleau looks to sophomore Jason Small and freshmen Paul Lewenberg and Alex Zahouriko to support Hawkins. Small is coming off an excellent freshman season in which he placed 20 th in the USCSA National Championship and consistenly placed in the Top Ten during the regular season carnivals.
