2 Lafayette Facilities LAFAYETTE FACILITIES 2 Allan P. Kirby Sports Center Dedicated on June 2, 2000, the $35 million Allan P. Kirby Sports Center gives Lafayette the finest athletic complex of any college of its size in the country. It includes a new, 110,000-square-foot intramural and recreational sports facility attached to the previously existing Kirby Field House. The field house itself has received a $2.5 million facelift and interior renovations. The new portion of the center, featuring a distinctive atrium overlooking Fisher Field, includes the Kamine Gymnasium, which includes three 50-by-84-foot courts for basketball and other sports and an elevated 1/10-mile jogging track. The Buck Courts include six courts for racquet sports, two for squash and four that can be configured for squash or racquetball. A 6,600-square-foot fitness center and weight room includes a full strengthtraining circuit, spacious free-weight area, and more than 30 cardiovascular machines. There is also a 35-foot climbing wall, an aerobics area and several offices. Built in 1973, the original field house, which contains Ruef Natatorium, is home to several varsity sports teams. It has been enhanced to include a new sports medicine area and a new equipment room and renovated locker rooms and administrative offices. The lobby and Athletic Hall of Fame exhibitry have been completely modernized. Major support for the sports center was provided by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, which made a $32.5 million gift to Lafayette, the largest gift ever received by a college, university or other non-profit organization in the Lehigh Valley. The $32.5 million contribution, which Lafayette has received in full, includes $26.25 million for the sports complex and an additional $6.25 million in support of other objectives in the Lafayette Leadership Campaign. The total cost of the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center is $35 million. This includes $26.5 million in construction and renovation costs and $8.5 million in endowment for operation and maintenance of the facility. Approximately 75 percent of Lafayette students participate in varsity, junior varsity, club, intramural or other recreational sports. The intramural program includes some three dozen sports. There are 15 club sports. The Kirby Foundation is the family foundation of the Fred Morgan Kirby family, which has been prominent in the life of Lafayette for nearly a century. Seven family members are alumni, four have served as trustees and three received honorary doctorates from Lafayette. 8 The Patriot League PATRIOT LEAGUE In its second decade of academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League continues to focus on its founding principles. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. Patriot League scholar-athletes are academically representative of their class. Those high standards are widely recognized on the national level. The origins of Patriot League excellence date back to 1986 with the inception of a successful Division I-AA football conference. In 1990, the Patriot League expanded to an all-sports conference, featuring 22 championship sports. Full League members include American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Associate members include Fairfield (field hockey), Fordham (football), Georgetown (football), Hobart (men s lacrosse), Towson (football) and Villanova (women s lacrosse). These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. League members annually rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Every full-member institution ranked among the Top 20 nationally in each of the last two years. The Patriot League also ranked first among all Division I conferences in student-athlete graduation rates for the fourthstraight year and second in overall student graduation rates. Twenty student-athletes representing seven institutions have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Leading the Nation In the latest NCAA Graduation Rate Report of student-athletes, the Patriot League ranked first in overall student-athlete Graduation Rate. The Patriot League boasts a conference-leading 84.8 percent student-athlete graduation rate, and an overall student body graduation rate of 86 percent which ranked second overall to the Ivy League. The top five student-athlete graduation rates, by conference follow based on the last NCAA graduation rate report: Conference Percent 1 Patriot League MAAC Atlantic Big East West Coast 69.5 Patriot League studentathletes have also earned two Fulbright Scholarships, a Luce Foundation Scholarship, a Marshall Scholarship, two NACDA/ Disney Scholarships and three National Football Foundation Scholarships among their many accomplishments. Excellence has not been confined to the classroom. Among the many achievements on the field are: Three Patriot League men s soccer teams were awarded bids to the 2002 NCAA Tournament, the highest total in Patriot League history. For the fourth time in the last five years, the Patriot League football champion upset a higher-seeded team in the opening round and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Eight Patriot League basketball teams have competed in NCAA, NIT or pre-season NIT tournaments in the last three seasons. Opening-round victories in the NCAA baseball and softball tournaments, as well as individual All-America recognition in track & field, lacrosse, field hockey and football, are now regular occurrences for Patriot League teams and student-athletes. Individual achievement is continually recognized as the League averages approximately a dozen Academic All-Americans each year. American s Karla Kucerkova was named the 2002 Verizon Volleyball Academic All-American of the Year, becoming the first Patriot League student-athlete to be named Academic All-American of the Year in any sport. Excellence flourishes in the Patriot League, providing true meaning to The Patriot League Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders. 8
