May n, 198^ UNIVERSITY STATUS college's application to be designated as a university AX A 1s on the agenda for the May 23 meeting of the CSU Board of ON TRUSTEE AGENDA TRUSTEES. The agenda, released this week, states: "California State College, San Bernardino now meets the specified criteria and Is requesting that the Board of Trustees and the California Postsecondary Education Commission affirm this fact so that the campus may be renamed California State University, San Bernardino." The trustee Educational Policy Committee will review the application at Its morning meeting and will report to the full board In the afternoon. After securing from the Activities Office, SS 123, a confirmation form which establishes their eligibility to participate, students must pay a $A marching fee at the Bursar's window, AD 111. Both the form and the fee receipt must be taken to the Bookstore to rent the regalia. Students may order gowns through June 8. Rental fees for students are: Bachelor--cap, gown and tassle, $13.35; Master-- cap, gown, tassle and hood, $25.85; Master--cap, gown and tassle, $1A.20; Master--hood, $11.70; Tassle. $2.50. The college's isth commencement exercises will begin at 6 p.m. on the lawn south of the Gymnasium. The event was changed from the former 9 a.m. hour to avoid the morning heat. Dr. Robert Mlddlekauf, director of the Huntington Library In Pasadena, will give the address. SUMMER SCHOOL EXPANDS An expanded surwner session, with three time modules Tn Twppp ^PQgTnwc allow students more flexibility and more units, will be offered here this year. Bulletins announcing the summer program are now available from the Office of Continuing Education, PL 500 South and the Public Affairs Office, AD 117. The first session, of five weeks, will run from June 20 to July 26. Session II opens July 30 and concludes Aug. 20. Session III also begins July 30 but It continues until Aug. 31 ^tudents may earn a maximum of 20 units credit durlna summer. Fees for summer session are $38 per unit plus parking and student fees of-$ Most summer courses carry five units of credit, although education, computer science and theater arts have classes with lesser units. Nearly 100 courses in 20 disciplines will be offered during Session I. Eight classes are listed for Session II and la for Session III. Continuing education classes will also be offered on campus and in Hesperla, Idyllwild, Palm Desert, Redlands, Riverside

3 DR I CAROL GOSS IS NEW DT. Carol GOSS (Pontlcal science) is the new chair of - ' ^ ^ «the Faculty Senate. Elected Tuesday, she succeeds CHAIR UF ["ACULTY OENATE J^G GAS (Spanish). The new vice chair Is Dr. Susan Melsenhelder (English). Serving as secretary is Dr. Frances Coles (Criminal Justice), who was previously vice chair. Dr. Goss was chair of the Senate in and secretary ^- She is currently one of the col lege's representatives to the Statewide Academic Senate. FACULTY MEMBER David NUII (Health science and Human Ecology) last week re- - ceived a Governor's State Employee Safety Award for He WINS otate AWARD recognized for providing the college with professional assistance in the health and safety field which resulted in improved work practices for a safer work environment. His services have ranged from environmental monitoring to interpretation of state and federal safety regulations. Dr. Null joined the Cal State faculty in 1977 as assistant professor of health science after serving as an industrial hygienist with Aerojet Nuclear Co. and EG&G Idaho, Inc. His field of expertise ranges from industrial hygiene to toxicology and nuclear biology He earned his B.A. in zoology from UC, Riverside; his M.A. In biological sciences from Cal State, Hayward; and his Ph.D. in environmental health science from UC Berkeley. UCR ECONOMIST To SPEAK Dr. Roger L. Ransom, professor of history and economics at UC Riverside, will speak at noon Wednesday in PL 500. His topic is "Economic Security In the 20th Century: Some Thoughts on the Evidence." The program is coordinated by Dr. Mayo Toruno (Economics). 'BEACH PARTY' IS A day at the beach WMI be the theme of the Sprlngfest held - y Thursday on the sidewalk between the Creative Arts Building and OPRINGFEST IHEME student Union. Featured will be the Jazz group "August" and the Christian rock group the "Darrell Mansfield Band." Club activities planned include an art and handicrafts sale, a dunk tank and various luautype food sales. Faculty and staff are invited to leave their brown bags at home and Join the student clubs for lunch, said Clare Sharafinski, activities advisor. 4 NATIONALLY KNOWN NURSING EDUCATOR HERE TUESDAY DT. Anne Davis, nationally and internationally third annual Pfau Distinguished Lecture in Nursing at 7 p.m., Tuesday in the Recital Hall. Dr. Davis, who has extensive publications to her credit, will speak on "The Future Responsibility of Nursing: An Ethical Perspective." A professor of nursing at UC San Francisco, she has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, the University of Edinburg, Scotland and the College of Nursing in Hyderbad, India. Dr. Davis earned her B.S. degree In nursing from Emory University, her M.S. in psychiatric nursing from Boston University and her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. She received the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Fellowship in 1976, a second Fellowship in 1980 and was elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 1977» Tickets are $10. Nurses who wish to earn two-tenths unit of continuing education units may do so for an additional $1A, said Dr. Del LaVerne Watson (Nursing), who Is coordinating the event. INSANITY PLEA IS TOPIC OF LECTURE THURSDAY LAWYE r-psychoanalyst William J. Winslade, author of "'N' T'N'H ^ in the Recital Hall. Dr. Winslade will discuss the uses and misuses of the insanity plea. An adjunct professor of law and adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at UCLA, Dr. Winslade Is director of the Legal/Ethical Consultation Service in the UCLA Neuro-Psychiatric Institute and the UCLA-NPI Forensic Psychiatry Service. He will also address a graduate seminar taught by Dr. Marsha Liss (Psychology), who arranged the visit. TV FIGURES TO BE AT LOS Angeles television broadcasters Maclovio MTMADTXV AMTN MI-TM a Ci-MTMAn Porez of Channel 2 and Liz Gonzales of Channel MINORITY AND MEDIA SEMINAR,, participate in a day-iong conference on minority access to the media here May 19. The activity is designed to give representatives of non-profit, community-based organizations information on ways to develop public relations programs and secure access to the media. Most activities will be in the Physical Sciences Building. There will also be career development seminars. Area media representatives participating include Cheryl and Hardy Brown, editor and publisher of the Black Voice; Alfredo Gonzales, broadcaster, KVCR-TV and KCAL radio; and Gloria Macias Harrison, publisher of El Chicano. Preregistration fees are $10. After May 15 and at the door they are $12. Fees include materials and luncheon. The conference has been arrainged by George Martinez (Upward Bound). 5 CAL STATE ASSOCIATES PLAN SPRING LUAU I ^ spring luau Saturday evening, May 19 will conclude the year for the Cal State Associates, a college support group composed of faculty, staff and spouses. The luau, open to everyone interested in the Associates, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Beverly and Alan Dyer, Arbeth St., Rialto. Reservations must be made with Mrs. Dyer, Ext. 7516, or after 5 p.m. Entertainment and election of officers for 198^-85 will follow the evening meal, a planned potluck- During the past year the Associates have participated In a variety of activities to aid college programs and to help members of the campus community become better 3C-^ quainted. The Children's Art Fair and the puppet show at the Open House are traditional events for the Associates. Other social events included an Egyptian dinner, the Arts Buffet Cabarets, the Christmas progressive dinner and an Octoberfest. The Christmas greeting scholarship fund and several garage sales raised funds for students. The latest sale, held at the home of Dr. Catherine Gannon, netted $^65 for the student emergency loan fund. WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN ^ OPONSORED DY OAA ^ workshop for women interested in furthering their education and pursuing careers while staying mentally healthy ^JII BE held Friday morning. May I8 under the sponsorship of Student Affirmative Action. Dr. Lynda Warren (Psychology) is coordinating the program, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Lower Commons. Workshops will address topics such as the fear of success/failure, using other people as resources and role models for Hispanic children. The workshop is free and prior registration is not required. 'MERCHANT OF VENICE" OPENS HAY 24 IN IHEATRE Tickets will go on sale Monday in the Theatre Arts Office for the spring quarter production of William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." The play, directed by Dr. William Slout, opens Thursday, May 2A and will continue May 25, 26, 30, 31 and June 1 and 2. Curtain time is 8:15 P-m. Tickets are $^.25 general and $2 student and senior citizen. Cast members include freshmen James Seilsopour and Jacqueline Resales; sophomores Mark Duncan and Clayton Martinez; juniors Keith Hearon, Lonnie La Pointe, Bruce Mullenix and David Pavao; seniors Scott Edwards, Bill Greeley, Nancy Learmonth, Mary Manthis, Mark Peters, Gary Roberson, Shannon Rubin, Vtckl Smith and Amber Talvi; and graduate student Michael Galyon. All are theatre arts majors except Edwards, math; Pavao, marketing; and Galyon, undeclared. CSU WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN EARLY RETIREMENT PROGRAM The California State University system will not participate in the new two-year early retirement program authorized for state employees by Gov. Deukmejian last March. The CSU is still paying the approximate $17 million cost of the last retirement program, in which more than 1^00 employees participated, according to Chancellor W. Ann Reynolds. The CSU was also uncertain whether it could comply with the retirement time period, a 60-day "window" beginning March 29.

She gave the lecture, "Luxury Trade and Tribute in the Aztec Empire," at a Cal State L.A. Faculty Colloquium May 3 Dr. Anand Bhatla (Marketing and Management Science) and Dr. Rauf Khan (Accounting and Finance) gave their paper, "Insurance for Investment in the Third World and the Exploitation of LDCs," at the Western Social Science Assn. conference in San Diego April Drs. Louise Burton and Janice Chavez (Education) presented their paper, "Special Educa tion in Rural America--The One-room Schoolhouse Revisited," at the Council for Exceptional Children International conference in Washington, D.C. April Dr. Naomi Caiden (Public Administration) has an article "The New Rules of the Federal Budget Game" in the March/April edition of Public Administration Review. Dr. Michael Clarke (Public Administration) presented a paper, "Labor Law and Chapter 11: The Impact of the Bankruptcy Law on Union Rights," at the Western Social Science Assn. convention in San Diego April 26. COMMUNITY Ors. Richard sotting, Fook Liu (Computer Science) and Ruth Wilson SERVICE (Blology) spoke at the career day at San Bernardino High School May 2. Dr. Mildred Henry (Education) spoke on "Non Communication: at St. Paul AME Church in San Bernardino April 29. The High Cost of Ignorance' Dr. Julius Kaplan (Art) is presenting a four-part series on modern art at the San Bernardino County Museum. The final lecture will be at 7:30 p.m., May 16. Also, Dr. Kaplan spoke to a group of students and their parents on "Art History-Methods and Meaning" at San Gorgonio High School May 7. Don McKenzie (Budget Planning) has been elected first vice president of the San Bernardino Host Lions Club and will take office July 1. Dr. Ansa Ojanlatva (Continuing Education) gave two presentations on health education jobs at the career day at San Bernardino High School May 2. Vice President Gerald Scherba (Academic Affairs) and Dr. Rauf Khan (Accounting and Finance) spoke at a workshop for senior officers of San Bernardino County at the University of California Conference Center at Lake Arrowhead May 2. The workshop was offeree by Continuing Education and the Department of Public Administration. Dr. Lynda Warren (Psychology) spoke on "Stress, Eustress and Mental Health" to the professional staff of the California Heart Assn. May 2 in Long Beach. She also spoke on Social Support and Stress" to the California Assn. of Educational Office Employees April 28 In Ventura. Dr. Del LaVerne Watson (Nursing) spoke on "Issues in Nursing" to sophomore students at the College of the Desert April 26. NOTEWORTHY Role: Chrls Crenfell (Physical Education and Recreation) May 8 completed the requirements for his Ph.D. in physical education from USC. His dissertation was "Factors Influencing Involvement In a Secondary Sport The Case of the Football Official."

8 OPEN, ENROLLMENT IS Mnw Fnp HPAI TH PI AWCJ THE Open enrollment period for voluntary vision and enhanced dental coverage for supervisory and management personnel continues through May 25. Representatives from Safeguard Health Plans, Inc., which provides the vision plan, will be in the Lower Commons Tuesday afternoon, May 29 to explain the program. Units 3 and k employees not presently covered may attend the meetings and enroll in the vision care at this time. Under this plan, employees pay the monthly premiums and must use the doctors on the approved list. California Dental Service will provide the enhanced dental care for supervisory and management employees, who must pay the added premium. Units 3 and k already have this coverage. More information about both plans is available from Pat Diaz, benefits clerk in Personnel, Ext MODEL UNITED NATIONS The seventh annual Model united Nations of San Bernardino Tm ^ccqinm WpnwPQnAV session all day Wednesday, May 16. About 150 IN oession nednboday students from seven high schools within the service area are expected to participate, said Dr. Brij Khare, faculty advisor to the annual function. The General Assembly will meet in the SUMP, with committee meetings elsewhere in the Student Union and in the Lower Commons. Six committees will be assigned a topic for discussion and debate. Committee members will then prepare resolutions to be voted on by the General Assembly that afternoon. The activity, which is recognized by the United Nations Assn. of the United States, is sponsored by the Political Science Department, Student Services and Academic Programs. This is the first time the event has been held on campus.
