4 2014 Season Outlook With a strong set of returning gymnasts, promising newcomers and a successful offseason, Temple Women s Gymnastics and head coach Aaron Murphy are prepped to begin a new season in The Owls are coming off a 6-26 record from the 2013 season, with a fourth place finish at the conference championships. Murphy, who was named ECAC Coach of the Year for the past season, has brought in seven newcomers to a team returning 19 athletes. From the team s ECAC championship line-up, which posted 2013 s top team score of , only one routine has been graduated. This includes returning a full beam squad (Jean Alban, Alexis Arena, Sylvie Borschel, Brittanie DeMeno, Taylor Rakus, and Heather Zaniewski) that was ranked within the top 30 of all Division 1 programs last season. Beam is that one event that has stood out for us in the past couple years and I know we ll have no problem continuing that success, said Murphy. Fifth-year senior and co-captain Jean Alban will be one of the team s key returnees this season. Alban is coming off the best season of her career. She posted career-highs on all four events with her best work a all-around score at the West Virginia quad-meet. Jean looks to contend in the all-around in her final year at Temple University and will have her sights set on out performing herself from last season, said Murphy. Heather Zaniewski Alongside of Alban senior co-captain Heather Zaniewski, who earned a spot in the USAG Nationals uneven bar finals last season, is expected to make a clean and quick recovery from a small shoulder surgery to continue her strong addition to the team s beam, bar and vault line-ups. Other key returnees include the Owl s allaround competitors Brittanie DeMeno and Alexis Arena. The pair posted top all-around scores of 38.2 and , respectively. Floor exercise and vault workers Stephanie Verry and Lauren Capone, along with uneven bar specialists Reagan Oliveri and Tara Kilkenny, will all be expected to make strong returns and help the team achieve high rankings in both the ECAC conference and the USAG division. Murphy states, Reagan has a great chance at taking an all-around position for Temple this season and has proved her skills throughout the pre-season. The other members of the team can t go unrecognized as they strive to break into the top six this year. They are Brianna Ferdinandi, Jasmine Johnson, Arielle Burris, Danielle Vahala, Taylor Moyer and Mary Kate Walch. Murphy has added a strong freshman set to this year s roster. Victoria Reggiani, a native of Ridge, N.Y., and Waldorf, Md. resident, Briana Odom both come from successful junior olympic program careers, qualifying for the National Invitational Tournament as level 10 gymnasts. As Temple Owls, both look to make a strong impact in their rookie seasons. These two young gymnasts along with their fellow freshman teammates have taken on the role of being a Temple gymnast and have what it takes to mix into the top six of any given event, Coach Murphy says strongly. Odom and Reggiani are joined by fellow rookies Rebecca McAndrew, a beam and floor specialist from Limerick, Pa., Mikaela Postlethwait, who travelled from Albuquerque, N.M. to train in all four events and Jazznique Baker, a native of Harrisburg, Pa. who also trains in the all-around. Newcomers Erin McCane of Latham, N.Y. and Rachel Kudler of Marlboro, N.J. will each take a red-shirt this year and recover from major surgeries to begin full training in the season. Assistant coach Deirdre Mattocks-Bertotti will return for her second season with the Owls. Last season, she primarily trained the vault and floor squads who successfully qualified five team Jean Alban members to the USAG National competition on the two events, as well as placed two gymnasts, Ruzich and Capone, in the top five on the floor exercise at conference championships. This season, Mattocks-Bertotti will focus a large part of her efforts to the Owls beam squad, where she hopes to continue the consistency and success from the 2013 season. With Coach Blake Collins missing from the staff this year, Deirdre will ensure that our excellence on beam will remain constant, said Murphy. After two intrasquad meets, the Owls will take to the nation s capital on January 12th to kick off the regular season at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational hosted by the George Washington University Colonials. Following the season opener, the Owls will make a visit to the University of Bridgeport followed by a long trip to Alaska, where two meets will be held on January 24th and 26th. February will be kicked off with the Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational in McGonigle Hall on the first, where the Owls will welcome West Chester, Ursinus and conference rivals UPenn and Cornell. The home competition will be followed by trips to UPenn, Towson, Rutgers, Ursinus, and Eastern Michigan. The regular season will wrap up with a trip to William & Mary before the Owls return home to host the ECAC Championships at noon on March 22 in McGonigle Hall Temple Women s Gymnastics Media Guide 4

During that campaign, Murphy showed his ability to get the most out of his lineups several times when he was forced to fluctuate his intended order at the last minute, due to pre-meet injuries. Murphy demonstrated a knack for getting his student-athletes to step up when the pressure was on, which helped members of his squad receive eight ECAC weekly awards over the course of the season. In 2012, Murphy guided the Owls to a record-setting performance by his squad at the annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational on Feb. 5. Not only did the Owls take the title on their home floor, they set the school record for a combined team total with a score of Under Coach Murph that same season, his vault lineup set a new program record for their highest score on the apparatus with a at William & Mary in the final meet of the regular season. During the postseason, Murphy saw his team demonstrate an impressive performance at the ECAC Championships, where it placed third and produced Katie Canning as the program's first-ever ECAC All-Around Champion. The 2010 season was yet another successful endeavor for Murphy and his team. The Owls repeated as third place finishers at the ECAC Championships, a meet which they hosted in McGonigle Hall. Moving forward to the USAG Championships, the Owls qualified for the team competition and saw a record eight athletes earn USAG All-America honors. In 2009, Murphy was recognized as ECAC Division I Coach of the Year, leading his team to a school-best third place finish at the ECAC Conference Championships. During that run, he also led the team to breaking the all-time team record, a mark that stood for six years. The Owls posted a team score of against Cornell on March 15, Prior to being named head coach, Murphy was the assistant coach for four years at Temple. The 2001 Temple graduate was named the USA Collegiate Assistant Gymnastics Coach of the Year in In his four years as an assistant at Temple, Murphy was responsible for spotting all four events while constructing the strength and conditioning program. Under his guidance, the program celebrated 16 USAG All-American honorees and several new school records. Prior to his experience with the women's gymnastics program, Murphy spent the season as an assistant with the Temple men's program under head coach Fred Turoff. While responsible for spotting all skill events for safety purposes, he was integral in assisting the men's team to an ECAC Conference Championship and national recognition. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Murphy was the Public Gymnastics Clinic Director at Temple from In coaching all ages and skill levels, he utilized his several years of experience in supervising, coordinating and working hands-on with inner-city children participating in gymnastics. A four-year letterwinner at Temple, Murphy served as a team captain his senior season ( ). His career as a performer, and 2001 U.S. Championship participant, is headlined with several honors including the 2001 Bill Braverman Award Recipient for Excellence and the 2001 Most Consistent Gymnast Award. Murphy, born in Barberton, Ohio, currently resides in Philadelphia. 6

31 University administration Neil D. Theobald is Temple s 10th president. He began his tenure at Temple on January 1, In naming Theobald to this role, Temple Board of Trustees Chairman Patrick J. O Connor cited his extensive record of accomplishment as a university administrator and faculty member: "Dr. Theobald is a gifted teacher and dedicated researcher. In addition, he has a deep and practical understanding of the changing dynamics of higher education. He wants to ensure that students have access to an education that is first-class and affordable. I can't think of a better set of values to bring to the Temple presidency." Theobald was named Indiana University s senior vice president in Previously, he had served as the senior vice provost at the University s flagship campus in Bloomington and as special assistant to IU s president. Major accomplishments during more than a decade as a senior administrator at Indiana University include increasing the mean SAT score of the incoming class at IU Bloomington from 1096 to 1203, directing a $1.1 billion capital campaign, and boosting IU s credit ranking to Moody s highest level (Aaa). In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Theobald holds a professorship in education finance. His research interests in the appropriate role of decentralization in educational financing and in modeling educational labor markets are reflected in more than $1.5 million in funded research, numerous books and book chapters, dozens of articles published in professional journals, and nearly 50 policy reports for state governments across the United States. At Indiana University, Dr. Theobald directed a research center that assisted state governments in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Washington in devising education funding processes that equitably facilitated academic excellence. In addition, Theobald was a three-time winner of IU's Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. Theobald is a past-president of the American Education Finance Association, winning the association's Jean Flanigan Award for the outstanding dissertation in the study of educational finance in In 1995, the University Council for Educational Administration presented Theobald with the Jack A. Culbertson Award as the professor who, in the first seven years of his or her career, made the most outstanding contribution to the profession. In 2003, Theobald was presented the Distinguished Graduate Award by the College of Education at the University of Washington. A native of Peoria, Ill., Theobald had planned to enter an electrician s apprenticeship after high school. However, donors to Trinity College in Connecticut made it possible for him to attend college and Theobald earned a bachelor s degree in After a short stint in the corporate world, Theobald began his education career as a secondary school mathematics teacher in the State of Washington, where he also coached baseball. He subsequently Neil D. 33 athletic Facilities Joseph V. Labolito The liacouras Center has been the home of the Temple men s and women s basketball teams along with concerts, commencement, and other events since The Liacouras Center The Liacouras Center is a four-building complex that includes a Convocation Center, the Independence Blue Cross Student Recreation Center, 1700 North Broad Street and the Entertainment Community Center with retail shops, a 1,200-car parking garage, and a livemusic restaurant. The Center has been designed as a venue for culture, sports, entertainment, commerce and education. The Convocation Center seats 11,000 for convocations, commencements and concerts; 10,206 for basketball games; and up to 3,500 for theater and dance. The theater configuration is named for benefactress Esther Boyer Griswold. Rededicated on February 13, 2000, and named in honor of former Temple President Peter J. Liacouras, The Liacouras Center, the home of Temple basketball, is one of the premier on-campus arenas in the country. Already the site of some exciting events in its history, the Temple venue has hosted such sold-out concerts as Bob Dylan, along with the NBA Players Party prior to the 2002 NBA All-Star game and the 2002 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship. The Liacouras Center was also the site of the 2003 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, the 2004 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds, and the 2006 and 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Regionals. In an historic partnership, the Pennsylvania state legislature provided capital funds - $31.8 million - to build a new multi-use complex, provided the University could raise $28.7 million from private sources. The total cost of the multi-building complex would be $107 million - an investment in Temple's future. Originally christened The Forum at The Apollo of Temple, the Board of Trustees voted in 2000 to change the building name to The Liacouras Center in honor of President Liacouras' retirement after 18 years as Temple's chief executive.
