5 2016 Temple Gymnastics 2016 SEASON OUTLOOK Under the direction of first-year head coach Umme Salim-Beasley, Temple women s gymnastics is set to begin a new era for the program in The Owls have welcomed a brand new coaching staff, new practice facility and seven newcomers following their 2015 season. Last year saw a season high score of and an ECAC Championship fifth place finish. With the loss of eight letterwinners, the Owls are entering 2016 with many changes. I think the biggest thing as a coaching staff that we wanted to set forth from the very beginning is staying positive and being consistent in what we re capable of doing, said Salim-Beasley. Our focus is doing clean routines with minimal deductions to the best of our ability. Salim-Beasley is joined by new assistant coach Michael Rosso and first-year graduate assistant coach Anastasia Halbig for her first season. Both Rosso and Halbig hail from Rutgers University with Halbig being a four-year member of the women s gymnastics team and Rosso working as a student assistant coach for two years. The coaching staff is excited to face a highcaliber schedule that includes two home meets and matchups with both conference and non-conference opponents. The Owls first home meet is the annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational on Feb. 6 and will feature 2015 ECAC champions, William and Mary, as well as West Chester University, Ursinus College and Southern Connecticut University. #WETHET Junior Briana Odom Away from home, the Owls will be traveling to schools across the map. Beginning at Central Michigan, January will feature matchups at Kent State University, William and Mary, George Washington University, University of Pittsburgh, and West Chester University. I n February, the IGI Chicago Style meet in Chicago, Ill. will be a quad meet that includes Northern Illinois University, Central Michigan and the University of Alaska. Also featured in the month of February are two more quad meets before March begins with the second home meet featuring Penn and Bridgeport on the 5th. The team will close out the regular season at Brown University on March 12 before competing at the ECAC Championships on March 19. Following the conference championships, the Owls look to make an appearance at the NCAA Regional Championships. If we keep our focus on our consistency and being aggressive with our routines, I think we have strong potential to be competitive with any team we compete against, said Salim- Beasley. Bars is an event that we are going to really stand out in this year. We have the depth and the originality and that event is going to match up with any school we see this season. Working through a new preseason training regimen in a new practice facility in the fall, the Owls capped off their preparations with two mock meets. In the second intrasquad meet, the team ended the day with an overall score of and was highlighted by the team s four all-around contenders. Sophomore Kerry Arone led the pack with a total allaround tally of Briana Odom, Sahara Gipson and India Anderson also competed on all four events. We have a lot of depth when it comes to allaround, said Salim-Beasley. We have a lot of girls who have the potential to compete on four events and it s unusual to see that on college teams. We have four or five and it is really nice that we can say that we have girls we can switch from event to event that can add depth at any point in time. With a large number of gymnasts showing the ability to perform on all four events, Salim- Beasley believes the depth of the team on each event will help the team reach its goals successfully. The work ethic in the gym is so strong with all of them, said Salim-Beasley. We don t have one person who is not putting their best effort forward each day which is what is so great about this team. They push each other and know what the expectations are. Senior Reagan Oliveri will return to competition this year after taking a red-shirt in 2015 due to injury. In her last competitive season, Oliveri was named team MVP and earned first team USAG All-American honors on beam. 4 Senior Reagan Oliveri Joining Oliveri in their final seasons will be Michaela Lapent, Danielle Vahala and Hannah Popper, all of whom saw personal-bests on their respective events in Lapent, who competed on all four events earned NACGC Scholastic All-American honors for her academic and athletic performance last season. Junior Victoria Reggiani and sophomore Gina Tucker are two more key returners who posted strong performances in Reggiani saw action on three events, posting her strongest performances on bars and vault where she consistently scored above 9.6. Tucker specialized in beam and vault as a freshman where she saw line up spots in seven total meets. Sophomores Kayla Kennedy and Gianna Gambuti missed the 2015 season with injuries, but have come back to exhibition routines at both mock meets this fall. Gambuti logged the highest beam score of the Owls at the second intrasquad with a solid score of The Owls are welcoming two transfers for the 2016 season. Gipson and Alexa Phillip have joined the team and look to make an impact on all four events. Gipson and Phillip are joined by five true freshman who bring impressive resumes from their JO careers. It is going to be an exciting season, said Salim-Beasley. The team is ready to be competitive and they really want to do well. They believe that they can do well this year.
