2 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta As Her Majesty, the Queen s representative in Alberta, it is my pleasure to join in welcoming everyone to Food Banks Canada s National Conference in Calgary. This conference provides a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness, show support, share information and educate each other on the activities in our communities across the nation. I encourage each of you to take advantage of this occasion to engage, learn, share, build connections and collaborate on different initiatives and ideas. I appreciate and commend the important work done by the Food Banks as you succeed in raising the level of support to those in need. I am confident that this conference will result in positive impacts on the networks you encounter every day as you strive to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of our communities and our country. Thanks to each of you involved in the food banking community for your devoted support and contributions. I wish you all the best for an informative and inspiring conference. Her Honour, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

3 Taking the Reins We re so pleased to be in the west in the beautiful province of Alberta and the vibrant city of Calgary, to join food bank organizations from across our nation. This year s conference has a powerful theme: Taking the Reins. Nobody understands this concept better than food bankers. It takes a steady hand to carefully guide our organizations in a masterful way. It takes skill and patience but most of all it takes clear direction. We as a network are all working together in the same direction and to further our goals as we help each other on our travels. We can share resources and knowledge and experience. And most importantly we can lend support to each other when at a time of great need. Our hope is that this conference will allow us to rally together against hunger. During your time in Alberta we hope you have an opportunity re-energize and refocus with exciting and innovative sessions, events and information sharing. Our sincere appreciation goes to our hosts, Food Banks Alberta and Calgary Food Bank, for warmly welcoming us to their province and city. Thank you for all you do and your attendance at this conference. Your energy and unwavering commitment to the cause of hunger in Canada inspires and motivates us. Hats off to you! 2017 NATIONAL CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE Kirstin Beardsley, Food Banks Canada Marzena Gersho, Food Banks Canada Amanda King, Ontario Association of Food Banks Lori Morrison, Food Banks Canada Board Director Elena Murray, Food Banks Canada Sarah Norman, St. George and Area Food Bank Jeremy Tuff, Calgary Food Bank Morissa Villeneuve, Calgary Food Bank Katharine
