We hope that this 2017 Fall Newsletter finds you, your families, and your organizations all getting back to normal after the recent weather events. On behalf of the FEFPA Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your continued support and participation in the FEFPA organization and a special thanks to those who attended and made the 2017 Summer Conference in July a great success. For over 50 years, the focus of FEFPA has been to provide a forum for educational facilities professionals across the state to exchange ideas and build relationships that ultimately improve and positively impact the learning environment for our faculty and students. We returned to the Boca Raton Resort and Club this year for the 2017 Summer Conference and had a wonderful event! Thank you to all of our new Sponsors for joining us and to all of our returning Sponsors for their continued support! Also, our deep thanks to the Educational Members who attended and made the Conference a success! We had good feedback from a number of Educational and Associate members about the Conference. We also had some honest perspectives on how we may improve in the future. Both aspects are important to help us guide your organization so keep them coming! As I touched on in my closing remarks at the end of the Summer Conference, later this fall there will be focused opportunity to have your voice heard, as we will solicit feedback from you on how we can continue to improve and grow 1) in our service and mission; 2) in meeting your professional needs and interests; and 3) in your overall experience of FEFPA! Please keep sending your ideas and comments about our conference programs to me as well as your Program Chairman. As always, feel free to call me or me directly with comments to help us address your interests, needs and ideas on improving our programs in the future. I invite you to look at our website to learn more about FEFPA, our programs, and our conference events. We have a few changes on the FEFPA Board this year. As you know, I assumed the role of President this year filling the shoes of Francisco Hoyos (FIU) who will serve as Past President. John Bozarth (Architecture Showcase Chair/Bay District Schools) has retired from the Board and Dane Theodore (Brevard County School District) will serve as Architectural Showcase Chair. Tracy Suber (FDOE) has been appointed and moved onto the Board to serve as Department of Education Representative in place of Darrell Phillips who has cycled off the Board. A complete list of current Board officers, appointed Board representatives and the corresponding contact information is provided at the end of this newsletter for your information and use. In closing this newsletter, we are pleased to invite you to attend our 2018 Winter Conference, January 31 - February 2, We are excited to be returning to the beautiful Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast. In addition to a strong program, our featured event at the conference will be the Architectural Showcase! FEFPA CONFERENCE PROGRAM The 2017 Florida Educational Facilities Planners Association Summer Conference was held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club this summer. The event was well attended and included countless old friends, familiar faces, and a number of new folks interested in the Association and the Conference. It was a pleasure talking with each of you and we sincerely hope you took the opportunity to participate in some of the continuing education sessions that were offered. The Program Subcommittee would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the Board for their continued support and confidence in us as we develop the Program for this and future Conferences. We would like to also extend our thanks to each of our members, who continually participate both attendees and presenters, for without you the hard work would be meaningless. We promise to continue striving to create a Conference that provides you a place to exchange ideas and we promise to continue developing impactful programming that stimulates your professional growth. As we gear up for the 2018 Winter Conference, the agenda will again feature a number of relevant and useful workshops, speakers and networking activities. As we did last year, we will be bringing in some external providers to provide critical continuing education for various licensure including those for architects, engineers, building officials, and planners. While we are still working on content, some anticipated topic areas include: Emergent Technologies in Educational Facilities Best Practices in HVAC Design and Implementation Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management Florida Building Code As has become a FEFPA hallmark, we will provide you opportunities to have round table discussions with your respective state planning and budgeting staff; best in class looks at recent education projects through our Architectural Showcase; and, of course, keep you informed of all that s happening in Tallahassee with our Florida Department of Education, Building Code, and Legislative Updates. Please be sure to stay connected by visiting our website as we draw closer to the Conference and round out our full agenda. We re always in search of building our presentation and program base, so we strongly encourage submittal of new and current subject matter. 5 ARCHITECTURAL SHOWCASE Everyone knows that winning a FEFPA Architectural Showcase Award sets you apart in Florida s educational design community. It is the only design award in Florida that is judged by architects and facilities professionals working directly in the K-20 education system. Since their success in providing the best possible learning environment for their students is directly related to their ability to select talented architects, they are uniquely qualified to identify excellence in educational design. Your next opportunity to compete for the 20 th edition of this prestigious award will be during the 2018 FEFPA Winter Conference. The attendees at this conference are your target audience in the educational sector, so take advantage of the event to demonstrate your creativity and innovation to existing and potential clients. The works exhibited are always an inspiration to those who strive to create exceptional learning facilities. The 2018 Architectural Showcase presentation, judging and awards ceremony will take place at the beautiful Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida from January 31 st thru February 2 nd. The Showcase entries are always a popular and well received element of the three day event. The wining projects are posted on our FEFPA website where they receive additional recognition. Winners in each category will be invited to present their designs and highlight their firms in a Pecha Kucha format at the 2018 Summer Conference at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. As in previous years, there are six categories to select from. These are: Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, State Colleges, and Universities. There is also a category dedicated to Special Educational Facilities for those unique projects. Projects that are under construction may be submitted for consideration as well as those that are completed. The evaluation criteria consist of the following seven elements to be addressed in your submittal: 1. Innovative response to the educational program 2. Aesthetics, and use of materials 3. Flexibility for community use 4. Provisions for technology 5. Green / LEED design 6. Relationship of spaces and expandability 7. Site development Brochures and entry forms will be ed soon. 6 FEFPA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC YEAR Congratulations to this year s FEFPA Scholarship winners! Thanks to our generous sponsors, we were able to provide two $3,000 scholarships to two deserving students in Florida colleges and universities. The first scholarship winner is Rachel Chon, a junior at the University of Florida studying architecture and planning. The second scholarship winner is Nathalie Canate, a senior at the University of Florida studying architecture. Each academic year FEFPA offers cash scholarship awards of $3,000 to deserving Florida college students at the rate of $1,500 per semester. Eligible applicants include sophomore through upper level undergraduate and graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements stated on the application instructions. If you are, or know of a deserving sophomore, upper level undergraduate or graduate student who is a permanent Florida resident majoring in a facilities planning related field, e.g., architecture, engineering, urban planning, construction management, interior design, please refer to the Scholarship Info link on our web page, for further information and to apply. Our application deadline for the academic year is June 1, TWENTY NINTH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The Twenty Ninth Annual FEFPA Golf Tournament was played this year at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Fifty two participants were challenged by the beautiful Resort Course in an event organized to support and ensure the FEFPA scholarship program can continue to be funded. The golf tournament is one of many great opportunities FEFPA provides for team building and networking while participants enjoy catered lunches and unlimited beverages throughout the round. 1 st and 2 rd flight winners and skill contest winners were rewarded with gift certificates and prizes at the awards breakfast on Thursday morning. Winners were determined by dividing the field of players into 2 equal flights based on final scores and the best score in each flight. The team winning the second flight at 6 under (65) was the foursome of Jeff Brown, Mike Kroll, Will Lenihan and Michael Borg; the first flight winning team at 9 under (62) was the foursome of AJ Meyer, John Dunnuck, Chris Sumner and Stuart Wiggins. Skill prizes went to Chuck Coffman for closest to the pin on hole #6 at 4 2 ; Bill Barimo for closest to the pin on hole #13 at 13 9 ; Josh Whitehead for closest to the pin on hole #15 at ; and Chris Sumner for longest putt made on hole #2 at Congratulations to the winners and thank you all who participated! Also, a special thanks to those who provided goodies for the golf goody bags. We look forward to seeing you again and hope to have your support next summer at the Boca Resort Golf Club.
