4 Greetings, Tougaloo College Alums: As always, I want to thank those members of the Executive Committee and Committee Chairs who have been working to make sure that the business of the TCNAA is handled with excellence. There are several important issues I want to address: 1. Welcome new TAB Editor. On behalf of the TCNAA I want to welcome Mrs. Jimmie Hampton Hartfield who accepted the position of TCNAA TAB Editor. We thank you for loaning your many years of experience in public relations and publications to this position. As you know the TAB, electronic and hardcopy, is the key communication link between the College/TCNAA and our alumni. If there is anything your fellow alumni can do to make your job easier please do not hesitate to let us know. Also, I want to extend a BIG THANK YOU to James McQuirter, H. T. Drake and the TAB Committee who kept the TAB going after the untimely death of TAB editor, Mr. Chase Gayden. You did a superb job. Thank you, Doris Bridgeman for twisting Mrs. Hartfield s arm until she accepted the appointment. 2. Nominations and Elections Committee. Carolyn Price and her Committee issued the call for nominees and you responded. Now, you have the opportunity to elect an alumnus/alumna of the year, and regional representatives who will carry out the mission of the TCNAA with excellence. Don t forget your ballot must be postmarked by April 30, Hall of Fame Nominees. The Hall of Fame Committee, headed by Alisha Brinson and Addie Hudson, is receiving nominees for the TCNAA Hall of Fame. It is expected that each alumni chapter will nominate and support at least one deserving alum. Please observe the deadlines so that extra measures will not be necessary to move the process forward. 4. The Annual Fund Goal. The annual fund goal for this year is $1.25 Million. As of 01/07/2013 we raised $502, Louis Gilbert, Edmond Hughes, and Dr. Roy Irons have agreed to spearhead the Annual Fund Drive assisted by the Office of Institutional Advancement and the Office of Alumni Affairs, directed by Doris Page 4 (continued on page 5)
5 Bridgeman. In addition, all reunion class agents are urged to increase their efforts to help the TCNAA reach its goal by June 30, Membership Committee. The current number of TCNAA members is less than the 1000-member goal set for the Membership Committee headed by Carolyn White and Donna Davis. TCNAA Vice President Joyce Delk has committed to assisting the membership Committee. Also, David Miller, TCNAA Representative to the Board of Trustees, has been added to the Membership Committee. Hopefully, with this additional leadership, we will reach our goal of 1000 members by the end of the fiscal year. Also, regional representatives and chapter presidents are asked to increase their membership drive efforts.. 6. Commencement Weekend. The Executive Committee expresses appreciation to Eagle Queen Annie Archie for heading the Commencement Weekend Committee again this year. Mrs. Archie and her committee have worked tirelessly to make sure Tougaloo is ready to receive us the weekend of May 1 5, 2013 (A WEEK EARLIER). The list of activities, registration information, and hotel information is available elsewhere in this TAB. 7. Finally, if you have not visited the Tougaloo College Campus in a few years, when you step onto the campus for Commencement Weekend 2013, you will notice the making of an even more amazingly beautiful campus. The historic renovation of the Mansion is progressing very well. The interior structural work, which includes the structural framing of the floors, walls and ceilings is complete. The new Bennie G. Thompson Academic Center is still laying claim to additional architectural awards. The design of the new student union, to be located in the wooded area east of Woodworth Chapel, is well underway. The landscaping is outstanding. If you have not paid your TCNAA dues then do so now. We are fired up and ready to go for Dear Ole Tougaloo. Please feel free to contact me with any ideas and recommendations. The best way to contact me is via tophas3@aol.com or cell phone: (713) Also, I am on facebook. Best regards, Message from Tophas Anderson (continued from page 4) Tophas Anderson, III Page 5

11 President Hogan Has Packed Weekend in Alexandria, Virginia President Hogan with Tougaloo alums following 11:00 A.M service at Alfred Street Baptist Church on Sunday March 3, 2013 President Beverly Wade Hogan visited Alexandria, Virginia to participate in Alfred Street Baptist Church s HBCU Observation Sunday designed to strengthen the relationship between Black Churches and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The invitation to the weekend activities was facilitated by the Washington Area Tougaloo Alumni Chapter members. Dr. Howard-John Wesley, Senior Pastor, Alfred Street Baptist Church, invited fellow clergy to a Friday dinner meeting to discuss ways of meeting the goal. Larnce Robinson and Anthony Howard, Sr. represented Tougaloo. President Hogan delivered the message on Sunday morning at the Alfred Street Baptist Church at the 8:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. services. In her message she discussed the social, ethical and spiritual responsibility of the Black Church and HBCUs to collaborate to produce disciples as she traced the parallels between Alfred Street and Tougaloo, noting that both institutions grew out of white entities and were leaders in the quest for civil rights. Her thought-provoking message was well received by the capacity filled sanctuary. Pastor Wesley was moved to state that he was almost ready to complete his application to attend Tougaloo and presented a $25,000 donation to Tougaloo. Our Alumnus of the Year, John Rosenthall, an Alfred Street disciple, introduced President Hogan at each service. Several Washington Area Tougaloo Alumni Chapter (WATAC) members, including President Kathy Mosley and Trustee Doris Browne, attended the 11:00 A.M church service. After the services, President Hogan joined approximately 20 Tougaloo alums for brunch to share the latest developments on campus and answer questions. Golf-A-Thon Chair, John Rosenthall presented President Hogan a $10,000 check, representing WATAC's proceeds from the 2012 Golf-A-Thon. Page 11
12 Tougaloo Golf-A-Thon October 17, 2013 Thursday of Founders Week Eagle Ridge Golf Course Raymond, Mississippi In 2012, 4 of TCNAA's 26 Chapters particpated in the Golf-a-thon and raised over $18,000 to give to the College for scholarships. Those Chapters were the event's managing Chapter, the Washington Area Alumni Chapter; the Chapter hosting the event, the Tougaloo Community Alumni Chapter, and the two Texas Chapters that showed why everything is big in Texas, the DFW Tougaloo Alumni Chapter and The TC Houston Alumni Chapter. Fun was had by everyone in making this 2nd annual golf-a-thon such a success. The Chair of the Golf-a-thon, John Rosenthall (Alumnus of The Year) believes in a few years this event can generate $100,000 annually for the college. For 2013, Chapters can sign up to participate as early as now at How Do I Sign Up? Easy. Visit Golf-A-Thon.com or contact John Rosenthall at jrosenthall@msn.com or John will get you all of the Golf-A-Thon information you need to sign up or be a sponsor. Page 12
