1 CITY MANAGER S UPDATE MAY 4, 2018 #LCLove Social Media Campaign Launching This Weekend As part of a new League City social media campaign, residents, businesses, organizations, and visitors can now use the hashtag #LCLove to share photos and comments about why they love League City. The #LCLove campaign is launching at this weekend s League City Music Festival and BBQ Cookoff. Attendees can visit the League City tent on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 to express their League City love on video or in a photograph, which will then be shared on the City s Twitter feed and Facebook page. In addition, festival guests can use a special #LCLove filter on Snapchat. region who want to hear some great bands and enjoy delicious BBQ. Osborne and the Communications Department will be distributing #LCLove swag at the festival including koozies, magnets, and t-shirts. Launching the campaign at the League City Music Festival provides us with the perfect mix of locals and those visiting from throughout the Houston-Galveston Music Fest Brings out Volunteer Spirit Mayor Pat Hallisey and nearly a dozen City employees joined League City Lions Club volunteers on Friday, May 4 to assist with Kids Day at Walter Hall Park. The event, which is part of the League City Music Festival, brings in special needs students from Clear Creek ISD and other school districts for a day of fun at the festival s carnival. City employees helped greet students and chaperones, load and unload buses, and serve lunch. guest, can get in free to the festival both days just by showing their City employee ID badge at the gate. League City staff also spent Friday morning setting up the employee tent at Walter Hall Park. 2 National Drinking Water Week May 6-12 is National Drinking Water Week, which provides a unique opportunity for the City s Public Works Department to share their knowledge and expertise with residents regarding the vital role water plays in our daily lives. Wastewater staff along with Captain H 2O, the city s water mascot, will be making appearances around the City to share water wise tips with residents. Look for their video tips on the City s Facebook page, Twitter feed, and on Channel 16. AmeriWaste Update On Tuesday, May 1 AmeriWaste became the City s primary trash provider for League City s 32,000 plus residential and commercial customers. City staff members throughout the week, along with AmeriWaste, have been fielding customer calls with questions, comments, and even compliments. One resident called to thank AmeriWaste workers for changing her flat tire while they were in her neighborhood collecting trash. A large percentage of the calls have been from residents who did not have their trash picked up on their scheduled day because they placed it at the curb after 7 a.m. The Communications Department is working with Public Works and AmeriWaste to spread the word to residents that trash must be put out by 7 a.m. Public Service Recognition Week May 6-12 is Public Service Recognition Week, which honors the millions of public employees at the federal, state, county, and city level. To say thank you for their dedication and service, City Department Directors are hosting an ice-cream social for all employees on Monday, May 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Blue Building. In addition, a proclamation recognizing the week and the work of all League City employees will be read at the Tuesday, May 8 City Council meeting. 3 CIP Update This project will begin transitioning into work that will require one-way traffic on St. Christopher in the coming weeks. We will be placing message boards onsite to provide notice of these lane closures. Genco Canal Improvements (CIP# DR1302): The project is on schedule and the contractor has completed an initial treatment of the invasive vegetation that this project intends to eliminate. Within the next week, equipment pads and fencing should be installed, and installation of aeration equipment will begin. This project is scheduled to be completed within 30 days. North Kansas Avenue Reconstruction (CIP#1702A): Drainage inlets, used to transfer water from the ditches on the west side of Kansas Avenue to the box culverts on the east side, are in the process of being installed. As of May 2, the contractor has progressed to the Coryell intersection and should be complete with the installation of these inlets by the end of next week. This project will begin transitioning into the roadwork phase before the end of May. The project is on schedule and budget. St. Christopher Avenue Reconstruction (CIP# RE1702D): Contractors are installing the 54-inch diameter storm water piping under FM 270 and should be complete within the next week. New waterlines along St. Christopher Avenue have been completed and will be pressure tested this month. Calder Road Reconstruction (CIP# ST1002): The concrete pavement, curb and gutter, storm structures, storm sewer, and concrete driveways have been installed from Ervin Street to Oleander Lane. CenterPoint Energy is delayed in completing their service tie-ins and transfer service from the old to the new gas lines, which is delaying Texas Sterling from completing storm sewer at this time. We anticipate CenterPoint Energy finishing next week allowing Texas Sterling to continue with storm sewer. South Shore Lakes Apartments/FM 518 Waterline Extension (CIP# WT1801): This project is complete except for minor cosmetic touch-ups. All tests and connections have passed inspections and are fully operational. Smith Lane Asphalt (CIP# RE1704C): Galveston County Road and Bridge Department is evaluating options to address some quality concerns with the work recently completed on Smith Lane. The City entered into an interlocal agreement with Galveston County to resurface Smith Lane; upon completion, the City responded to citizen concerns regarding the workmanship. Burd House Exterior Renovation (CIP# PK1801B): Bids to renovate the exterior of the Burd House/Park Administration Office are due May 8 at 2 p.m. This project will include removal and disposal of leadbased paint materials, the replacement of any rotten wood, re-glazing of old window panes, and surface preparation followed by repainting with exterior grade coatings to match the existing color.

4 Police and Fire Updates Family and Purple Heart Reunited Thanks to League City PD A Texas Bay Area family has been reunited with their late father s Purple Heart thanks to the perseverance and detective work of a League City police officer. About a year ago, while assisting during a courtordered destruction of unclaimed property, LCPD Detective Gary Yates discovered a Purple Heart. The medal, which had been seized during a search warrant, had gone unclaimed since 2012 after numerous attempts to contact the family had gone unanswered. Knowing what it was, and knowing that it probably meant something to somebody, I took it, and I knew I couldn t see it destroyed, said Detective Yates. Yates then put his police training to work, and after searching several databases, he discovered that someone had reported a stolen Purple Heart from a car burglary in It turns out the medal belonged to Navy Veteran Albert Whatley. Whatley, who served in the Pacific during WWII, passed away some years ago, but his son, Stephen Whatley, was still actively looking for the stolen medal. Whatley and his family, who live in the Bay Area, were reunited with their father s Purple Heart at the annual League City Salute to Heroes banquet on Friday, April 27. It feels great to get something back that emotionally attaches me to my dad, said Whatley. It s a piece of him. Drug Take-back The League City Police Department s annual Drug Take-back event was a tremendous success with a record number of unwanted prescription drugs collected. Over 200 cars stopped by the League City PD on Saturday, April 28 to drop off over 800 pounds of various unused and unwanted medications.

5 including crime prevention campaigns, Blue Santa, National Night Out, the Citizens Police Academy, Volunteers in Policing, and much more. Golf Tournament Over 30 teams and 120 supporters of the League City PD participated in the annual golf tournament fundraiser in memory of Saul Balderas. Saul Balderas was employed by the League City Police Department from He served League City as a part-time patrolman, detective, reserve officer, and Hispanic Affairs Officer. Money raised at the tournament allows the police department to provide community outreach services Rustic Oaks HOA Meeting League City Lieutenant Thorne Lee and Officer Edwin Turcious attended the May 4 Rustic Oaks Homeowners Association meeting to address citizen concerns regarding assorted topics including speeding, traffic enforcement, and drug use in a nearby park. LCPD recently conducted a speeding and traffic survey in response to citizen complaints of excessive speeding along Bay Area Boulevard and Country Lane. Because of the survey, officers will be conducting zero-tolerance enforcement in the community over the next month. Lt. Lee and Officer Tercious also addressed citizen concerns regarding narcotic activity in their community as it relates to the Morningside Drive police-involved shooting this week. Helen Hall Community Garage Sale If you missed out on spring cleaning and are looking to de-clutter your home, look no further! Donations are needed for the Helen Hall Library s Community Garage Sale. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of Helen Hall Library organization.
