2 Lizzy Nolin Wins Congressman Murphy s 2012 Art Award for Second Time in Three Years BPHS senior Lizzy Nolin s charcoal Hands Study was selected as the winner of Congressman Tim Murphy s 2012 Congressional Art Award. Her work was chosen from works submitted by 32 high school students from 16 high schools in Congressman Murphy s District by a panel of local artists. Her artwork will hang in the United States Capitol for one year beginning in June, and she will attend the opening of the exhibit, with the other Congressional District winners. In 2010 Lizzy s pencil drawing of actress Helena Bonham Carter was also selected for this honor.

4 Six BPHS Students Named Top of the Shop Six BPHS students were named Top of the Shop by the Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School for the second semester of the school year for demonstrating outstanding conduct, attendance, proficiency in course work and professionalism: Antal Amaditz (Computer Aided Drafting) Tyler Boxheimer (Electrical Construction) James Hammerle (Automotive Mechanics) Casey Provident (Health Assistant) Ryan Schaum (Machinist Technician) Zack Ulakovic (Protective Services)
5 BPHS Students Among Top Scorers on Westinghouse Science Honors Institute Exam Two Bethel Park High School juniors were among the top scorers on the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute s Exam. Dan Snyder finished in First Place and earned $1,000. Matt Ennis finished in 17 th Place and received a $50 Best Buy gift card. This year 247 students took the two-hour exam to compete for prizes. Matt Ennis, Rebecca Hoffman, Vincent Mamone, Caitlin Michael, Divya Raghu, Dan Snyder, Rachel Taylor and Rachel Wyda earned Participation Certificates. This 10-week program exposes high school juniors to careers in science and engineering.
6 Students Earn Scholarships to Study in Germany in BPHS junior Kristy Ennis and sophomore Kevin Fleischmann received Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarships and will be studying in Germany next school year. They will live with a German family and attend a secondary school in Germany, with their expenses paid for jointly by the United States and German governments. They were selected after a lengthy and rigorous selection process. They join a long line of BPHS German students to receive this honor. This is the first time that more than one BPHS student was selected in the same year.
7 Music Department Earns 15 Awards on Spring Music Trip The BPHS Music Department earned 15 awards during this year s Spring Music Trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Symphonic Orchestra First Place, Superior Rating Symphonic Band First Place, Superior Rating Symphonic Band William D. Revelli Award for Best Overall Symphonic/Concert Band Percussion Ensemble First Place, Superior Rating Marching Band (Parade) First Place, Superior Rating Drum Line First Place, Superior Rating Bethettes First Place, Superior Rating Majorettes First Place, Superior Rating Top 21 (Madrigal) First Place, Superior Rating Top 21 (Jazz) First Place, Superior Rating Top 21 Overall Best Choir Ensemble Award Concert Band First Place Excellent Rating Jazz Band First Place, Excellent Rating Tim Lautizenheiser Esprit de Corps Award (Spirit Award) Mary Hannah Swaney Best Accompanist Award for her work with Top 21

9 BPHS Students Remember Their First Grade Teacher BPHS juniors Alexa Roth and Meghan McLinden coordinated a Theme-Day Dress Up Week at Memorial Elementary School and raised over $1,100, which they donated to the American Cancer Society in memory of retired Memorial First Grade Teacher Dottie Kennedy, who passed away this spring. Students and staff paid $1 each day to dress in a different theme, such as Hat Day, Wacky Hair Day and P.J. Day.
10 Three BPHS Students Earn First Place at State PJAS Three Bethel Park High School students earned First Place Awards at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science s State Competition on the Penn State campus. 11 Three IMS Students Earn Awards at PJAS Independence Middle School students earned two First Place and one Third Place Awards at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science s state competition on the Penn State campus. FIRST PLACE Emily Augustine -- Effects of Global Warming on Deep Ocean Currents Billy depoutiloff The Varying Rates at Which Different Insulators Retain Heat THIRD PLACE Christian Smetana Truss Bridge Strength
12 IMS Wins Best Portfolio Award at Hydraulics Competition The IMS Team of Billy depoutiloff, Amanda Hokaj, Macie McKitrick and Christian Smetana earned the Best Portfolio Award at the National Fluid Power Challenge, where they competed against teams from 25 area schools in this competition to build a hydraulic device which would allow them to lift as many blocks as possible in two minutes. The Best Portfolio Award was given to these students in recognition of their efforts to document their research and the science behind their work. This is the second consecutive year an IMS team won this award.
13 IMS Students Had Proposals Accepted into NASA s Glenn WING Contest Two teams of IMS gifted students entered a project proposal into the NASA Glenn WING Contest and both proposals were selected. One team studied the cohesion and adhesion properties of water, and the other team studied the amplitude and wavelength properties of waves in a microgravity environment. Both teams came up with their ideas, wrote the procedures, designed and built an apparatus for their experiment and wrote their proposals. They shipped their apparatus to NASA where they were used in NASA s microgravity chamber to test the students hypotheses.
14 NAMS Needlers Make Dolls for Haitian Children A group of NAMS students, who call themselves the NAMS Needlers, completed a service project to make and send dolls to Haiti. The students used their needlepoint skills to make the dolls and clothed them with tie-dyed dresses they made using magic marker and alcohol. Thanks to Gabriella Como, Michaella Crum, Krista Hammerle, Jenna Kroboth, Courtney Geddes, Cassidy Kelly and Tori Slawinski.
15 Team Eclipse Collected PB and J for the Hungry Neil Armstrong sixth graders on Team Eclipse collected 172 jars of peanut butter and 155 jars of jelly and worked with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank to donate these items to the South Hills Interfaith Ministry s Food Pantry. In addition, the students wrote notes of encouragement and decorated paper placemats and lunch bags to brighten the days of the food s recipients.
16 Fourth Graders Work Together to Make Their School a More Beautiful Place William Penn fourth graders in Ms. Kasten s room gave up their recess time to work outside their school to beautify the grounds. Students volunteered their time to weed and mulch the flower beds in front of the school. Not only did they make William Penn an even more beautiful place, they also learned the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Thank you to Julianna Carbone, Madison Cerminara, Lindsay Hegedus, Carson Longenett, Carly Mamone, Lauren Mazzacone, Marley Murphy, Shaylee Skovran, Haley Vincent and Lilly Zeminski.
