Mahatma Gandhi. Fishers Junior High s inaugural Day of Service is quickly approaching! As of now, all students should be signed up for a task. Students met with their adult service leaders on Friday, April 27 th to discuss the day s itinerary, expected behaviors on/off campus, as well as lunch plans. Permission slips were sent home with both 7 th and 8 th grade students. The majority of 8 th grade students will be off campus serving in the community, while 7 th grade students will be participating in service projects on Fishers Junior High s campus. To make this an amazing day of service, we are requesting items to be borrowed or donated. We are especially looking for donations of canned food as well as personal hygiene products. This list includes: pasta, soup, rice, beans, cereal, oatmeal, baking mixes, granola bars, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, Band-Aids, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, washcloths, cotton balls, Q-Tips, antibacterial gel/wipes and gallon sized Ziplock bags. Student s may also need items that are specific to their area of service for that day. All items collected will be used on our Day of Service to help those in need within our community. This day is not only being used as a day to serve our community, but as a day to learn through service. Dave Calvario, the director of the Center for Service Leadership at Waynesburg University stated, Any time you can mix service and learning together, it s a good thing. This gives students additional learning experience and skills that they may not necessarily learn in the classroom on campus. We at Fishers Junior High believe that the Day of Service is not only a way to give back, but also an opportunity to integrate service into our curriculum. Students will be completing lessons and assignments that are aimed towards service learning and allow reflection on what was accomplished throughout our Day of Service. 2 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE Dylan Noble competed in the State Championship National Geographic Bee representing Fishers Junior High School on Friday, April 6, Dylan was selected to represent FJH after he won the school's competition and flew through the initial preliminary round. This tough competition started with 103 students from around the state. Dylan made it through the 1st round and into the final top 10! In the end, he finished with a tie for 7th place! Congrats to Dylan on this amazing success! FJH is proud to have had you as our representative. The HSEvening of Innovation, a showcase of teaching and learning throughout HSE Schools, is coming up on May 2nd, from 6-8 p.m. at Hamilton Southeastern High School's College and Career Academy. Please join us for this fun, family event with over 80 Innovation Booths and Innovation Playgrounds! All schools and grade levels will be represented for this unique districtwide expo of 21st century learning. For a sneak peek of what's in store for the HSEvening, visit HOMER IS BACK IN THE BIG HOUSE! The FJH Academic Team competed at Fall Creek Junior High in the WW1-Themed Super Bowl! The team prepared by spending weeks reading in detail about the war to end all wars. After 5 tough rounds, the FJH Academic Team came out with the win and the travelling Homer Statue! All 21 competitors from FJH competed and all contributed to the team s success, it truly was a team effort. Congrats to FJH Academic Team and the following competitors. 3 We cordially invite you to the Fishers Junior High Dance Show on Friday, May 4 th with two shows: one at 3pm and one at 7pm. This is our annual dance recital, showcasing all of our dances we have learned this year, from ballet to hip hop! Tickets are only $5 and will be sold during lunch April 30th to May 4! Please come out and join us for a great show!!!

4 Dear Parents, Being involved with the FJH PTO was an easy decision. Once I saw the passion and energy the staff at FJH has for the students, I was ALL IN! As I leave FJH I hope that you will consider becoming involved with an event at FJH. I am a true believer that many hands make light work. We have worked hard these past two years to create school community events. We have created the blueprints for the events and we need parents to carry on our efforts. I would like to personally thank every parent who helped make this year successful. Whether you volunteered your time or made a monetary donation, you made a difference. You are appreciated. Family and staff is what make this school so great. This year could not had happened without the dedicated time and efforts of individuals like Jenny Kilgore, Dena Simpson and Angela Lurton. Funds raised through PTO events, supported Camp Tecumseh International Fair Science Fair Staff Professional Development Student events including Candy Grab Ugly Sweater Contest Valentines Day Cards After School Dances Giving back to our students and staff is the heart of the PTO.
