First organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the league has undergone several changes since the 1990s, highlighted by expansion and increased participation in national championships. The MIAA has gained recognition as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation, producing seven National Championship teams since the 1990s Pittsburg State University in football ( 91), Missouri Southern State University in women s softball ( 92), the University of Central Missouri in baseball ( 94, 03), Northwest Missouri State University in football ( 98-99) and Washburn in women s basketball ( 05) as well as numerous individual NCAA Division II Champions and All-Americans. The MIAA conducts conference championships in eight men s and nine women s sports. Men s champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis and golf. Women s championships are held in volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, tennis and golf. Jim Johnson enters his third year as commissioner of the MIAA. Johnson previously served as athletic director at Texas A&M University-Commerce ( ) and as assistant athletic director at Central Missouri ( ). He also was a long-time staff member of the NCAA in membership services. Natasha Oakes is in her fifth year with the conference, her second as Assistant Commissioner for Internal Operations/Senior Woman Administrator. Larry House enters his second year with the MIAA, his first as Assistant Commissioner for Championships and Business Development. Kellen Coleman begins his first year as Media Relations Coordinator for the conference. 7 The MIAA in the NCAA-II Tournament The MIAA has been well represented in the NCAA Division II national playoffs during the last 27 years, with at least one school qualifying for post-season play each year. Central Missouri, which leads all MIAA schools with 16 post-season appearances, captured the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Jennies also finished as the national runner-up in and have twice reached the national semifinals ( 82-83, 88-89). Washburn, which has made 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament, posted a 35-2 record in 2005 en route to capturing the National Championship. Emporia State qualified for the NCAAs for the 12th time in the last 13 years in The Hornets reached the national semifinals in 1999 after finishing as the national runner-up during a 33-1 campaign in Last year Emporia State and Washburn represented the MIAA in the NCAA-II Tournament. Former league member Southeast Missouri also finished the season as the national runner-up. An MIAA team has reached the national quarterfinals in nine of the past 14 years. Missouri Western finished third nationally during the season. Pittsburg State qualified for the NCAA-II National Tournament five times in the 1990s.
