Construction apprentices from all over the province tested their abilities at Skillbuild - the largest multi-trade skills competition in Northern Ireland. Providing a unique stage to showcase excellence and talent, Skillbuild NI is held annually each spring, with over 100 of the top construction apprentices competing to win coveted titles in 13 different craft areas, ranging from brickwork to wall and floor tiling. The winners may then go on to represent Northern Ireland in the UK Skillbuild Finals and, potentially, the UK at WorldSkills. Skillbuild NI competition test pieces are designed to challenge the ability of apprentices to follow detailed instructions, produce accurate and neat work and be economical with materials while working to strict timescales all essential requirements for today s construction industry. The competition not only encourages trainees to improve their own skills, but provides an example of the high quality work being produced in training organisations across Northern Ireland to meet local industry skill needs. 4 U Martin's Skillbuild experience put him on the road to success If proof were required of the success of Skillbuild in Northern Ireland then Martin McAlorum provides the evidence. In 2003 he was Northern Ireland's Apprentice of the Year and he went on to represent the UK at the World Skills Finals in Switzerland, an experience that led him to set up his own business. Now MMA Joinery Specialists works with all the leading contractors in Northern Ireland and has a full order book to next Christmas success that Martin puts down to taking part in the Skillbuild competition. I've no doubt that had I not entered Skillbuild I wouldn't have my own business now, he said. Through the competition I learned to push myself and found out that I was actually capable of a lot more than I thought. David Cooper, Chairman of Skillbuild NI (centre) pictured with just some of the behind-the-scenes team who make the finals happen. NORTHERN BUILDER HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF MEETING THE PASSIONATE TEAM BEHIND THE SUCCESS OF NORTHERN IRELAND... Passion and pride! Eric Armstrong, Operations Director, inspects some expert brickwork. Reaching new heights The National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC), which is the UK's largest roofing trade association, runs the roofing competition on behalf of Skillbuild. The organisation believes its involvement promotes excellence and high standards to the next generation of young roofers. NFRC Associate manufacturing members sponsor the event and thanks go to John Brash, Klober, Sandtoft and SIG for their support in not only donating materials to all the regional heats and the final, but supporting and guiding the competitors. Over the last few years hope has been in short supply within the Northern Ireland construction industry. Dire predictions of downturns, lighter order books and dwindling projects to tender for have hit the industry hard and developed a not unreasonable malaise around the sector. For those wanting to join this allegedly beleaguered industry a positive in itself securing the necessary apprentice placements has not been easy. So, it is fair to say, that our up-and-coming brickies, tilers, roofers, joiners and the like should be a despondent bunch. Not so. When you attend the Skillbuild Finals, you can't help but be taken by the enthusiasm of everyone involved. The eye for detail, the precision and the expertise is something that Northern Builder regularly highlights when focusing on some of the province's most prestigious projects but to see it at this apprentice level is inspiring. It also affirms the notion that, maybe, just maybe, things aren't as bad as they seem. But this collective outpouring of enthusiasm is only possible because of the hard work of a dedicated team behind the scenes and Northern Builder had the privilege of meeting some of this passionate group at this year's finals hosted by the Newtownards campus of South Eastern Regional College (SERC). From overseeing the inter-college competitions to selecting the venue for the finals, the team also has to plan the test pieces, organise sponsorship, source materials and eventually build the bays required for the finals and that's before any competitors even get involved! But what is, on paper, a logistical nightmare is now a well-oiled operation that is the envy of the Skillbuild organisation in the UK. It is a lot of hard work but we get so much support from the colleges and also the wider industry, explained Eric Armstrong, Operations Director at Skillbuild Northern Ireland. It is a team effort and, in the end, it is about creating the next generation of construction workers, so the effort is worthwhile. In all its takes about nine months of planning to get to the finals stage and Eric must utilise all the experience he gained during his 30 years at the Northern Bank to good effect to ensure that it all runs smoothly. It's not just me, though, explained a humble Eric. We have a dedicated and very hard-working team of individuals who volunteer their services freely and without them the competition just wouldn't happen. The colleges also play an important role, particularly those chosen to host the finals. In effect, it is like a coup when we arrive as we simply take over a whole section of their building for a fortnight, which can't be easy, but we are very appreciative. We also get support from the Department of Education & Learning, CITB-ConstructionSkills NI and the wider industry who either supply materials or finance the finals. It is a collective effort but I think we are all focused on the fact that it is for the betterment of the industry. Certainly, it is clear when you talk to the Skillbuild team that this sense of purpose is the catalyst behind the competition's growing success that continues to grow year-on-year, as Judi Allen, a Skillbuild Northern Ireland board member, explained. You do get a buzz out of the success of the apprentices, she said. You see the effort and hard work they put in and it is good to see that rewarded, particularly for those who go on to the World Skills Finals and step up to the next level. Katherine Pollock, another board member, added, It is a positive story that you don't hear enough about. Young people get such a bad reputation and we feel lucky that we get to see the other side of this younger generation that, unfortunately, is largely ignored. It is a long way from the Craft Cup which was the original competition hosted by Belfast Technical College that was the precursor to Skillbuild Northern Ireland. Now, 20 years on, SkillBuild Northern Ireland has explained beyond all recognition. However, it is now just one step in a much wider competition, with winners in the Northern Ireland stage battling it out with competitors across the UK for a place on Squad UK and the chance to compete at the World Skills Finals, which this year will be held in London. David Cooper, Chairman, concluded, We are proud of the opportunities that Skillbuild offers apprentices but what is even more satisfying is how our young people take advantage of this to enhance their skills and take their career to a new level. It is important to offer that level of competition and focus on the necessity to complete work to the highest possible standards. What Skillbuild has proven over the last 20 years is that the skills gained in this competition have helped build a stronger construction industry in Northern Ireland. As the test pieces are dismantled and the medals presented, the Skillbuild Northern Ireland team already have an eye on next year's competition now that's dedication! 8 NORTHERN BUILDER MAGAZINE NORTHERN BUILDER MAGAZINE 9

5 JOHN D'ARCY, ANIC CHIEF EXECUTIVE, GIVES HIS VIEWS ON WHY THE ASSOCIATION PLAYS SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE FURTHER EDUCATION SECTOR... ANIC - Underpinning Skills Development INTERVIEW WITH JOHN D ARCY What is ANIC and what are its aims? The Association of Northern Ireland Colleges (ANIC) was established in 1998 when further education colleges across Northern Ireland became incorporated organisations. ANIC is owned and directed by the six regional colleges and it provides the voice for the further education sector in Northern Ireland. In addition to this representational role, ANIC provides a range of services to member colleges from employee relations through business support for the NI College Information System to development work in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. ANIC works closely with all 6 Colleges Belfast Metropolitan College, North West Regional College, Northern Regional College, South Eastern Regional College, South West College and Southern Regional College as well as key stakeholders including the Department for Employment and Learning, Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Invest NI among others The further education sector has undergone wide ranging restructuring in recent years. How effective has that been? The sector structurally changed in 2007 with the merger of 16 Colleges to 6 larger, regionally-based colleges. This has been effective in meeting the demands of changing Government policies and the demands of students, communities and business because of the drive and excellent leadership of College Governing Bodies and Management Teams. Colleges are firmly rooted in their communities and regions and provide unparalleled access to high quality education and training for people, businesses and communities. What are your views on introducing practical skill building into the classroom to help boost construction and craft skillls as an alternative career? Colleges are supportive of the development of practical skills in the classroom in order to allow more young people develop better informed choices of the types of careers available in exciting sectors such as construction and crafts. ANIC's mission is to be the voice of further education in Northern Ireland. What do you believe could be or done, or needs to be done, to help strengthen that voice? The achievement of this mission is always a work in progress as the challenges facing colleges in meeting the needs of Northern Ireland change frequently and swiftly. The current economic downturn is a case in point, with different groups of people needing the support of colleges. It is ever more important that the voice of colleges is heard and that we continue to develop ways to ensure that messages from colleges and their users reach those organisations and individuals who need to hear it.
