2 BSO Business Matters DECEMBER 2014 Page 2 HSC Leadership Annual QCF Recognition Event The HSC Leadership Centre recently hosted its Annual QCF Recognition Event at Clady Villa, Knockbracken. The event was opened by Diane Taylor, Head of the Leadership Centre, who welcomed everyone and congratulated the QCF team on their growth in the numbers of achievers. She recognised all participants who completed a management, leadership or coaching qualification through participation on HSC Leadership Centre-accredited programmes. As the largest approved Institute of Leadership and Management Centre in Ireland, a City and Guilds approved centre, and an Investor in People organisation, the HSC Leadership Centre offers a range of qualifications at levels 3 and 5 which are delivered in a bespoke manner to meet individual and organisational needs. In the past year over 200 candidates from the Health and Social Care sector, as well as private and voluntary organisations, registered for an award through the HSC Leadership Centre. Over 80 of these candidates, along with their managers, were present to receive their qualification. Diane Laverty, Business Manager for the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health, represented the voluntary sector and thanked the QCF team for the support given to their staff throughout their study journey. Outstanding Candidate Achievement Awards were presented by Shauna Kane, Quality Manager for the Institute of Leadership and Management, to Paulina Spychalska, Team Leader in RQIA, and Leanne Jones, Community Psychiatric Nurse from the South Eastern Trust, for their achievements in Level 3 and Level 5 Awards in Leadership and Management. Diane Taylor brought the event to a close by congratulating all the successful candidates and concluded by saying, these people are now positive role models, who will encourage and support others to set goals, reach their potential and achieve success. Left to right: Yvonne Connolly, Debbie Patterson, David Cairnduff, Paul Comac, Diane Taylor and Siobhan Rice.

4 BSO Business Matters DECEMBER 2014 Page 4 Learning Event on Electroconvulsive Therapy (E.C.T.) in the Clinical Education Centre Controversial, challenging and lifesaving can sum up some of the diverse and strongly held beliefs that members of the public and the Health Service may hold in relation to the provision of Electroconvulsive Therapy or E.C.T. as it is more commonly known. E.C.T. is a treatment that may be prescribed to an individual who is suffering from a serious mental illness such as severe depression or mania. In late October 2014 Eilish Boyle, Senior Education Manager and Lead for the E.C.T. Nurse Education Programme, secured non recurrent funding to organise and facilitate a unique E.C.T. Learning Event. This event brought together clinicians, educationalists and policy representatives who all had a motivating and driving interest in providing safe, effective and person centred care for the individual who is prescribed E.C.T. Delegates from the five H.S.C. Trusts were welcomed to the event by Dr. Glynis Henry C.B.E. Head of the HSC CEC. The Key Note Speaker was Professor Declan Mc Loughlin, Research Professor of Psychiatry in Trinity College Dublin, Institute of Neuroscience. Professor Mc Loughlin presented his most recent research paper Optimising ECT, a study investigating the effects of E.C.T. in treating people suffering severe depression. Other contributors to the event included Dr. Ian Mc Master, from the DHSSPS, and Mr Maurice Devine, Assistant Head of the HSC CEC who presented work on the draft Mental Capacity Legislation for Northern Ireland. Dr Shelagh Mary Rea, from the R.Q.I.A. presented the results of an investigation on the provision of E.C.T. services in Northern Ireland. A question and answer session was convened following these significant contributions providing delegates with an opportunity to meet their own learning needs by discussing and questioning the findings and recommendations made in the presentations. Work carried out by the E.C.T. Teams in the Trusts was showcased in a café style presentation in the afternoon along with a tutorial from Martina Burns, a Clinical Physiologist from the Belfast Trust, who presented on E.E.G. monitoring. Mental Health Nurses and Doctors from three Trusts presented their unique reflections on providing care and treatment to the individual prescribed E.C.T. Eilish Boyle then invited all delegates to consider the practice issues of their own organisations and formulating an action plan on how they could progress this work in the clinical environment. Eilish brought the event to a close by inviting delegates to become members of the regional forum on E.C.T. and offered sincere thanks to all contributors on a very successful Learning Event.

8 BSO Business Matters DECEMBER 2014 Page 8 ICT Procurement Update Aim: To enable participants to gain an update on the current position with respect to the procurement of ICT services. Content: As you will be aware the Technology Partner Agreement (TPA) has been a successful vehicle for delivering significant numbers of ICT procurements quickly and compliantly. Following a review of the use of the agreement and in discussion with Hewlett Packard and BSO Legal Services a number of practices have been identified which may create risks of non-compliance or indeed jeopardise the continued use of the agreement. In order to manage those risks more effectively and ensure that procurements conducted through the TPA are compliant and offer best value, training sessions have been arranged for your ICT staff involved in using the TPA. Format: One hour long sessions facilitated by experts. Dates: Friday 30 th January Training will be in two one hour sessions. Each will be exactly the same content. Session A 9:30am to 10:30am Session B 11.00am to 12 noon. Video conferencing facilities will be available. Venue: Leadership Centre 12 Hampton Manor Drive Belfast Facilitator: Staff from PALS and BSO Legal Services Note:It is extremely important that Trusts are represented at the training, in particular, those staff who are involved in the day to day use of the agreement as it is crucially important that they understand how to use it correctly. Please choose a session and contact Donna Magill on donna.magill@leadership.hscni.net
