2 CONDIT1Q;Y CHECK OI'.IE CHECK UPlf Constructed in 1888, the Perry County Courthouse is a two-storey brick with one-storey w irqs projecting from the east and west elevations- The two wings, added about 1958, have flat roofs while the original structure has a truncated hip roof. In 1969 the original steel shingles on the hip roof were covered w ith csm, wsltion shingles. Accordins to the county judge, the courthouse is built of bricks hand-made from Perry County clay. The building retained its original red-brick color until it was completely covered with white paint in Emut the same tine green woden shutters were added to all of the windo~~s., - The building is 04 a very smle style, with the truncated hip roof being the 5 most striking architecture1 feature- The frjeze aro~nd the two-storey s2ction i is very plain, as are the double-hucg, four-light wtndows set in deep rectangular mod frames-.. i < On both the north and south elevations the main entries are recessed in a smll porch-like alcove. Surrounding the entries and projecting slightly fro? the flat wall surfaces are $ squared pilastsrs supporting the entablature. The upper 'i poxtiorl of both er!+ry doors Is of r~.:'la-rgrrlar gless s;lt ir! a three-li$?l 5: I if'-+ -.-,- C +. L-bc --J.., ;, -LCTil.. ~hol~yh ty.9 north elevation is syv~otrical with EIve bays, thz ssuth elevatior -. -(. has fonr 537s- Three 03 the south bays have single windows, but the second bay from the uzst has paired windows on both stories. Ko infornation has yet... been uncovered cn %his particular feature of the structure... Though Iczated on the khikd 6ourth6use 'site, the present structure rests on its own origizal site. The interior kas been remodeled to acconodate modern office needs, but thk core of the structure has not been basically altered, The building.! remains in fairly good condition and is still used to house the Perry Counky government. Houston: In 1841 Hacskon m.d John Greathouse agreed to donate land an which to build a courthouse in the newly founded t6i.m of Perryvillk. The county seat was established in Perryville in 1841, and a log building &-as constructed to house court offices- Following a Eire in 1850, a second log courthouse was constructed an the sane site. I: In 1872 a large frame building replaced the log courthouse. Located a5out onehalf mile distant from the log courthouse, this building was situated on the *ird and final court:lous~ site. Successiv@?ires plagt~ed the county courthouse, but each re~lacement was located on the 1872 site. Since its construction in 1888 the present Perry County Courthouse -has been enlarged with additions, but has not been greatly altered..the two-storey brick structure is of a simple rectangular floor plan and featnres a truncated hip roof. The architectural style is extremely shple with an undecorated cornice, plain windows set in wood frames and an entablature over the two mafn entries. The building rests on the Perry County court square. Despite its central Arkansas 1ocation.and proximity to the state's most populous county (Pulaski), Perry County has alr.~ays been among the least populated of Arkansas' seventy-five count5es. Very few historic or architecturally significant structures remain in the area, thus iccreasing the importance of the courthouse. Pm,ong the very small number of historic structures still standing in Perry County, the ccurthouse is decicedly the nost signifi~ar~t. Thc buij.diny dominates the "erryville business district, an<: is the nost inportant historic man-?,ade laqdmark in Perry County.
