MARY PARISH LIBRARY SYSTEM WILL HOLD FIRE SAFETY AND PREPAREDNESS PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY HAMMERHEAD INDUSTRIAL SPECIALTIES AT SEVERAL BRANCHES DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER. REPRESENTATIVES FROM HAMMERHEAD WILL PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING: DISPLAY OF MULTIPLE TYPES AND SIZES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS AND OTHER ITEMS USEFUL FOR FIRE PREPAREDENESS. DEMONSTRATE AND TEACH HOW TO PROPERLY HANDLE AND USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, SMOKE ALARMS AND CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS. HANDS ON AUDIENCE PARTCIPATION USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO PUT OUT A REAL FIRE! WILL INSPECT PERSONAL EXTINGUISHERS FREE OF CHARGE. WILL ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS PARTICIPANTS MAY HAVE. EVERYONE FROM SENIOR CITIZENS TO GRADE SCHOOL CHILDREN (WITH PARENTS) ARE INVITED TO ATTEND. PATTERSON BRANCH For information please call *Halloween Word Bingo will be held on October 5th at 26th at 3:30 p.m. Any child who can read a bingo card or has help from a parent, friend, or sibling is invited to attend. Prizes will be awarded to winners and all participants will receive a snack. *Children in 1st-3rd grades are invited to make a kooky Halloween can of their choice to fill with their favorite Halloween treats and they make a perfect decoration. The program will be held on October 20th at 4:00 p.m. Participation is free of charge and registration is preferred but not required. WEST END BRANCH For information please call *All ages are welcome to join us for Fall Bingo on October 22nd at 4:00 p.m. *Our Annual Pumpkin Painting Program For All Ages will be held at 4 p.m. on October 29th. Bring your pumpkin and create your own masterpiece. Refreshments will be served. *Young adults 4th grade and up are invited to join us to make a Halloween Jar Head that lights up for a spooky effect and they are perfect for decorating. The program will be held on October 22nd at 4:00 p.m. Due to limited supplies, registration is preferred. PUBLIC TODDLER TIME FRANKLIN BRANCH For information please call *Afterschool Halloween Movie Hotel Transylvania Rated PG will be on October 22nd at 3:30 p.m. A permission slip must be signed! 4 BOOK CLUBS THE BOOK HEADS AMELIA YOUNG ADULT BOOK CLUB The Book Heads will meet on Friday, October 30th at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the book Eighth Grade Bites by Heather Brewer. Vlad has to keep his vampire urges under control while dealing with the pressures of middle school. Thirteen-year -old Vladimir Tod really hates junior high. Bullies harass him, the principal is dogging him, and the girl he likes prefers his best friend. Oh, and Vlad has a secret: His mother was human, but his father was vampire. With no idea of the extent of his powers, Vlad struggles daily with his blood cravings and his enlarged fangs. When a substitute teacher begins to question him a little too closely, Vlad worries that his cover is about to be blown. But then he faces a much bigger problem: He s being hunted by a vampire killer. Anyone interested in joining this young adult book club or would like more information, please call the library at BERWICK BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Berwick Branch Library Book Club for Adults will meet on Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the book The Whip by Karen Kondazian. The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte Charley Parkhurst ( ) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man in the old west. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love with a runaway slave and had his child. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track the killer. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver for Wells Fargo. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first known woman to vote in America in 1868 (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California. If you are interested in joining or for more information, please call the Berwick Branch Library at CENTERVILLE BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Centerville Branch Library Book Club for Adults will meet on Wednesday, October 28th at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the book Fly Away by Kristin Hannah. Tully Hart has always been larger than life, a women fueled by big dreams and driven by memories of a painful past. She thinks she can overcome anything until her best friend, Kate Ryan, dies. 5 BOOK CLUBS FRANKLIN BRANCH ADULT BOOK CLUB The Franklin Branch Library will meet on Thursday, October 8th at 4:15 p.m. to discuss the book The Sunflower by Richard Paul Evans. Anita Diamant s vivid, affectionate portrait of American womanhood, follows the life of one woman, Addie Baum, through a period of dramatic change. Addie is The Boston Girl, the spirited daughter of an immigrant Jewish family, born in 1900 to parents who were unprepared for America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End of Boston, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can t imagine, a world of shorts skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. WEST END ADULT BOOK CLUB The West End Branch Library Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, October 20th at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the book The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. Once a month, eight students gather in Lillian s restaurant for a cooking class. Among them is Claire, a young woman coming to terms with her new identity as a mother; Tom, a lawyer whose life has been overturned by loss; Antonia, an Italian kitchen designer adapting to life in America; and Carl and Helen, a long-married couple whose union contains surprises the rest of the class would never suspect. The students have come to learn the art behind Lillian s soulful dishes, but it soon becomes clear that each seeks a recipe for something beyond the kitchen.
