2 President s Letter Dear CDH Community, Every year, literally hundreds of milestones are observed by members of our CDH community. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight just a few of them. Our National Merit Semifinalists, who are the highest scoring National Merit entrants, representing the top 1% of Minnesota s high school seniors, included Madeline Lee, Carl Modl, and Anna Kalkman. Carl Modl received the National Merit University of Minnesota Scholarship. Our Commended Students, who represent the top 5% of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition nationwide, included Megan Kollitz, Emma Gutzmann, Kevin Hottinger, Wyatt Stackpole, Maria Neuzil, Mateo Paredes-Sepulveda, and Mark Schuweiler. Senior Matt McMahon joined classmates Maria Neuzil and Anna Kalkman as the third member of the Class of 2015 to earn a perfect 36 on the ACT. On average, less than one tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT each year achieves the top score. Cretin-Derham Hall launched a new website. The site is cleaner, easier to navigate for parents and students, and tells the CDH story to prospective families. The new site works better on mobile devices too. For the third consecutive year, Cretin-Derham Hall finished in 1 st place and won $10,000 in the annual Give to the Max Day in Minnesota. During a 24-hour period on November 13, 2014, CDH received online donations from 1,069 donors totaling $610,610! The annual SPAFF Raffle raised $151,000! 6 Link Crew is beginning its sixth year at CDH, and we are excited to announce the Link Crew Leaders for the school year. We hand selected these individuals from a large pool of applicants. The decision was particularly difficult this year as we selected one leader from each CASA family. In an effort to represent our diverse student body, some families are fortunate to have two Link Leaders in their family. In addition to the 9 th grade Link Crews, we also have a transfer team of Link Crew Leaders dedicated to helping our new transfers to CDH throughout the year. The Link Crew Leaders are junior and senior students who have been chosen to help 9 th grade students transition into high school. Link Crew provides the structure for 9 th graders to receive support and guidance from older students who have been through the challenges that high school poses. The older students also understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming. The Link Crew Leaders are trained to lead 9 th Grade Orientation Day activities, as well as scheduled social events and academic follow-ups during the year. Link Crew Commissioners provide leadership within the team of leaders. They work directly with the adult Coordinators to plan events and activities for both Link Crew and CASA. We also welcome Marcus Binns to the team of Link Crew Coordinators. We look forward to another great year. Congratulations Link Crew Leaders! 8 Heard in the Halls Band The Band finished the school year the same way it began with a drum roll and a cymbal crash! As the trimester got under way, CDH attended 4AA Large Group Contest on March 24 at Tartan. This year both the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble earned Superior ratings, speaking to the strength and quality of the band program. Seventeen student musicians (15 band members, plus 2 violinists not in band) made up the pit orchestra for the Spring Musical Hairspray! It was a great show with fun and challenging music, and it was great to be a part of it all. The students really stepped up and provided a very professional performance, earning Outstanding Orchestra designation from the Hennepin Theater Trust Spotlight Awards program. Fine Arts Week was May 4-8 with the Jazz Band and String Ensemble presenting its Spring Concert on May 7 (great concert!), and homeroom performances were presented during homerooms on Friday. The Band also supported the JROTC program at its year-end Twilight Parade. On May 16, the Band participated in the Celebrate West St. Paul Parade. It was a hot, humid, and long event, but the crowds were extremely appreciative and supportive. The Spring Concert was held on May 20 in the Lillian Theater. Both bands put on a great show, and the senior class was honored for its contributions over the past four years. The featured soloist representing this year s senior class was Maria Neuzil performing a Benny Goodman feature with some fantastic drumming by Tristan Anderson. The Band 8 also performed The Phoenix, a piece composed by senior John Kuntz. The evening concluded with senior awards and a video compiled by Naomi Main. The entire concert was truly a great finale to the school year and a great way to send off our incredible senior class! Preparations for the school year have already begun with music for the State Fair Parade on August 28 and the Homecoming Field Show on October 2 soon to be in the hands of the band members! Band Camp will begin on August 11 for percussion, August 16 for seniors and 9 th graders, and August 17 for the first full rehearsal. We thank all of you who attended our performances and supported us throughout the year. Have a great summer and be listening for the Band in the fall! Donna Novey Band Director Choir The choirs had a great year. All four of the ensembles saw a lot of growth during the course of the year and had a lot of success in their performances. Throughout the course of the year many students earned individual choral honors. In January, Megan Culligan, Sydney Dreyling, Olivia Enquist, Jack Johnston, Anna Kalkman, Kalay Kotasek, Seamus Kreitzer, John Modl, EJ Peris, and Connor Petit were members of the Suburban East All-Conference Choir. As a part of this group, they performed in the grade finale concert, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Aspaas, at the Conference Music Festival held at Mounds View High School. Over Presidents Day Weekend, three CDH choir students had big performances in Minneapolis as a part of the State Music Teachers Conference. On Thursday, John Modl sang with the ACDA of MN State 9/10 Honor Choir. And then on Saturday morning, Lexi Auth and Jack Johnston performed with the All-State Mixed and Men s Choirs respectively in their final performance of the year on stage at Orchestra Hall. Later in February, many students, as well as the Albert Street Voices and SweeTones ensembles, participated in the Section 4AA Solo & Ensemble Contest. Almost all entries from CDH received the highest ratings of either excellent or superior for their performances. Lexi Auth, Maria Burke, Olivia Enquist, Jack Johnston, Anna Kalkman, Seamus Kreitzer, John Modl, Willie Pearson, and Gracie Regala received superior ratings for their solos. The year ended in May with a wonderful concert of music from around the world. Each choir sang music from a variety of styles, cultures, and/or historical periods. There was truly something for everyone. At the final spring concert, several seniors received awards and recognition for achievements in choir over the course of their CDH careers. The top award winners were the Choir Program Award Megan Culligan; Choir Director s Award Lexi Auth and Anna Kalkman; and the National School Choral Award Olivia Enquist and Connor Petit. Though things wound down at the end of May and into June there was still a lot of excitement around the Choir Room as anticipation for next year built and auditions were held for both Pop Singers ensembles. Next

9 year looks to be another exciting one, and there are still/always openings for students to join choir! Chris Jacobson Director of Choral Music Theater What a theater year it has been! We could not have been more pleased with our entire season. Once again, as we do every spring, we find ourselves in a melancholy state of gratitude for the time, talent, and leadership of our incredible seniors and sadness as they move onto new stages. Thanks to all the theater students from the class of 2015 for filling the Lillian Theater with your lives. I missed the last Communicator deadline and thus lost the opportunity to brag about the winter production, Here I Am. CDH theater director Ann Frances Gerstner and Andrew Bourgoin, a local musical theater director, comprised the production. The show was a cycle of contemporary musical theater songs based on growing up from a child to a young adult. It was the perfect show for a teenage audience and one of the most powerful shows we have produced on our stage. Tears were rolling down cheeks as the actors sang about the joys and struggles they face in their journey to adulthood. The tenmember cast brought the house to their feet with their powerful acting and singing. We ended the year on another high note with the spring musical Hairspray. For the first time in my 22-year history, five out of the six performances were sold out! The CDH community support was truly remarkable. For those of you who missed it, Hairspray takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962 where a big girl with big hair and even a bigger heart has a goal to dance on a TV show. With the help of her newfound African-American friends, she breaks the social and racial barriers and manages to integrate the all-white show. It has been a dream of mine to direct Hairspray, because it is one of those rare musicals that actually has strong social messages. Producing the show provided an opportunity for the cast and crew to discuss racial inequalities in our world and in their daily lives. Little did we know that the show would become as timely as it was with the height of the Baltimore riots erupting during the opening weekend of our show. The lyrics to the opening song rang true: I hear that beat. The rhythm of town starts calling me down. It s like a message from high above. The Hairspray cast was evaluated by Hennepin Theater Stages Spotlight program. Our production won the following awards: Outstanding Dance Ensemble and Outstanding Orchestra (under the direction of A scene from the Spring Musical Hairspray Heard in the Halls Donna Novey). Outstanding Acting awards went to Willie Pearson, Laura Dellis, Jack Johnston, and Josie Luhman. Honorable Mention Acting awards went to Lexi Auth, Teriq Massie, Lily Gray, Nick Lynch, Elijah Heggernes, Dani Perra, Olivia Enquist, Zarieah Graves, Julia Siegler, and Clare Cho. A GIANT congratulations goes to junior Jack Johnston, who played Corny Collins in Hairspray. He was voted into the top twenty musical theater actors in the state of Minnesota. He will be performing at the State Theater, along with the other 19 actors chosen, on Monday, June 14. WOW. (See story on back cover.) Luckily, you don t have to break with CDH theater over the summer. This year s summer show, As You Like It, by William Shakespeare will be set in the CDH courtyard. The beautiful courtyard will provide a perfect setting for the show directed 9

10 Heard in the Halls by Ann Frances Gerstner and set in 1969 Woodstock era. It s sure to be a groovy way to enjoy summer theater. The show will feature the far out Angie Haigh 95 as Rosalind. Bring your blankets and flock to the show that everyone will be talking about. Dates and times are July and July 30-August 1, Thursday-Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Happy summer! 10 Katie Kreitzer Theater Campus Ministry Empty Bowls 2015 How many lives can $100, save? How many goats to provide milk, how many chickens to provide eggs, how many water buffalo to plow a field, how many alpaca to sheer for yarn and to carry produce and commodities? How many microloans can be provided, how many wells to provide clean water can be dug, how many children can be educated with $100,000.00? While I don t have the specific answers to these questions, I do know that after 13 years of our CDH community coming together for Empty Bowls to combat hunger and starvation and all of the challenges that come from being impoverished, we have been blessed to support the work of Heifer International with over $100, in donations! Beginning in the spring of 2003, CDH students, staff, alumni/ae, parents and friends started to gather for a bowl of soup and a piece of bread. And in every year since, friends, old and new, have continued to gather, sharing a simple meal, to share stories, and to share in a commitment to end the plight of those facing hunger and starvation. Thank you to all who have joined us throughout the years, with a special thanks to those that have attended many or all 13 of our Empty Bowls or have volunteered their time, made soups, bread, ceramic bowls, or donated silent auction items or provided direct financial support. Please add February 3, 2016, to your calendars for Empty Bowls 2016! LaSallian Youth Faith, Service and Community Our CDH LaSallian Youth concludes another year of Friday lunch meetings and so much more. Special highlights include hosting the now 3 rd Annual Night to Fight Homelessness, which included LY from Totino-Grace, DeLaSalle, Benilde- St. Margaret s, and Holy Family. Over 100 students came together for games and song, prayer and speakers, and a less than restful few hours of sleep on a cold and very windy November night on the baseball field. Thanks to this annual gathering, nearly $ was raised to support the work of Hope Street, a Catholic Charities shelter for homeless young

11 adults. A second highlight would be our 30 th Annual Breakfast with Santa with the preschoolers at Community of Saints school in West St. Paul. Over 50 students joined their little buddies in celebrating the season of Jesus birth. And now, as we begin the summer, LaSallian Youth will soon be off to Lewis University in Chicago for our annual gathering with LY from 15 other LaSallian schools of the Midwest. In addition, our La- Sallian Youth will be signing up to assist with the Project Share homeless shelter in July. All reading this are encouraged to consider volunteering at the shelter. Help is needed from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to welcome the families, as well as overnight hosts. If interested, please contact Rob Peick (RPeick@c-dh.org), or Pat Norusis (PNorusis@c-dh.org). Finally, a special thanks and blessing to all our LaSallian Youth seniors for their commitment and dedication to being women and men of faith, service, community and justice. Wilder Foundation Leap Forward for Children Thanks to the following students and staff who participated in the winter and spring Leap Forward for Children at the Wilder Foundation s Child Development Center: Zoe Allyson, Devin Blakey, Maria Burke, John Fox, Frank Kimlinger, Chalona Menyweather, Jack Messing, Grace Pearson, John Peterson, Claire Riesgraf, Michael Rindal, Chris Rugloski, Isabel Schreier, Jack Spencer, Maricella Swanson, Catherine Caher, Brynn Carlson, Megan Culligan, Yang Yang Guo, Rachel Jackson, Maddie Reilly, Abby Rottjokob, Clare Schwirtz, Claire Shaw, Jack Spencer, Margo Udelhoven, Meghan Vosbeek, Allison Ware, Katie Wollmering, Tali Ziegler, Casey Malone-Povolny, Amanda Reding, Claire Shaw, Isabel Warner, Mr. Mike Steineman, and Ms. Betsy Schmitz. Habitat for Humanity In a perfect world, all would know the blessing of a safe, quality, affordable home. It is with that goal in mind that Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and Cretin-Derham Hall stand as partners, committed to do our part in helping bring about that reality. Currently, 95 million people in the United States 1/3 of the nation have housing problems, including lack of affordability, overcrowding, unsafe conditions, and homelessness. In the Twin Cities metro area, more than half a million people, or more than 20 percent of the population, spend too much of their income on their housing. And the problem is growing faster in Minnesota than in any other state. This creates tremendous instability in our communities, weakens our economy, and even April Leap Forward for Children workers Heard in the Halls impacts our health and educational success. In the Twin Cities, nearly half of the families with incomes under $35,000 are paying more than they can afford for housing, not leaving enough for other necessities, such as good nutrition, health care, transportation, education, or saving for the future. Research has shown that when families have a stable, affordable home, they can provide stability for their children, gain improved health, physical safety, and security, increase educational and job prospects, and be engaged in their communities This past year, over 100 CDH students, staff, parents and alumni/ae were working across the Twin Cities helping families know the blessings of a home. The cadets of the Raider Brigade are an impressive bunch at a wonderful school. What they have done this year is simply amazing. Again, our most important accomplishment was our students working hard to again deliver the Brigade s 88 th consecutive rating as an Honor Unit with Distinction, a consecutive string of the highest rating likely unmatched by any other school in the country. In the future, March Habitat for Humanity builders there will no longer be a designation of honor unit with distinction. The U.S. Army leadership is designating a new rating standard, and when that is published we are confident we shall attain the highest of the new rating. Brigade team members participated in a number of drill and color guard competitions, gaining their share of recognition with many firsts, seconds, and thirds in these competitions. We are also very excited to announce that the opening enrollment will be around 230 students! Of the 230, we are so excited to see 64 incoming 9 th graders electing to become a part of the Raider Brigade. The upcoming year will see, for the second consecutive year, an enrollment of 230 students or more. We attribute our sustained strength to the fine students we have in JROTC and their spreading the word that we are a great program to be associated with at CDH. Congratulations to our new Junior Officers. They have proven that they have the knowledge necessary to lead the corps and compete to become Diamond Officers next fall: Brian Aguilar Rivera, Aaron Anderson, Gabriel Andrzejek, Amia Bridgeford, Emmanuel Cabasug, Peter Cho, Mark Daigle, Samuel Gagnon, Daniel Gainer, Leonard Gerten, Daniel Greenheck, Jordan Grovum, Jack Hallman, Levi Hinton, John Leininger, Anna Muccio, Nico Palomo, Sophia Perron, Augustus Postiglione, Joseph Schroeder, Michael Seivert, Christopher Seliski, Jonathan Westafer, Sarah Zastrow, Daniel Johnson and Luke Lacy. There are several juniors eligible to take the test again this summer. Those interested should contact LTC Fischer. Our students continue to lead the school in service with over 3,500 service hours to the school and community. A significant service project took place in December when our students participated in a Junior Achievement

13 event. All 232 cadets traveled to The Heights and Highland Elementary schools and presented the Junior Achievement curriculum, which focuses on basic government and community functions. This service experience benefits the students at the elementary schools and it certainly benefits our students in teaching and reinforcing the school s values of service, leadership, and community. This year, two members of the Corps have earned military scholarships to complete their educations and serve our country. Wyatt Stackpole will attend the US Military Academy, and Michael Fortuna will attend the University of North Dakota on an Air Force ROTC Scholarship. Host Commander and Cadet Colonel Thomas Konetschka and Commander of Troops, Deputy Brigade Commander Emma Gutzmann, led the Raider Brigade through the Annual Twilight Parade/Awards Ceremony on May 6. The CDH Band entertained the hundreds of guests assembled prior to and during the parade. The cadets receiving awards at the ceremony are listed separately in this edition of the Communicator. CDH President, Richard Engler served as the Reviewing Officer. He emphasized to the Corps how all of the students in JROTC support the CDH values. At the end of the evening the leadership of the Raider Brigade passed from the Class of 2015 to the Class of 2016 when the Acting Brigade Commander, Second Lieutenant Sophia Perron, received the Brigade Colors from Cadet Colonel Thomas Konetschka. JROTC cadets who received awards at Honors Night include Joe Amble, Rosemary Arends, Matt Boncich, Len Gerten, Samantha Guevara, Emma Gutzmann, Dan Johnson, Jacori Johnson, Nick Lewis, Sophie Perron, Michael Seivert, Wyatt Stackpole, and Will Zastrow. We held a team building/fun event this spring. In late April, we hosted a lock-in for JROTC students and approximately 60 attended. The senior class planned activities that included indoor Frisbee, basketball, dodge ball, movies, and just good old fashioned visiting with each other. There was delicious food (including pizza!) and fun for all in the CDH Field house. The large volume of April/May activities gave our cadets plenty of opportunity to serve. The CDH College Fair, NHS Banquet, Founders Day Breakfast, Minnesota Independent Schools Foundation Annual Awards Dinner, Grandparents Mass, and the Spring Band Concert were just some of the ways we supported our school with our time and talents. The Honor Guard accumulated hundreds of service hours in school and community activities, including alumni wakes, visitations, funerals, and receptions, plus the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation. Our Air Rifle Team has achieved a level of success that we have not seen for many years. The team competed in over 12 regional and national competitions and scored incredible total team scores. We placed 1 st in the Hancock High School-Aurora JROTC Air Rifle Match and the 2015 Pacific High School Parting Shot Air Rifle competition. Our top shooter in each of these two competitions was junior Aaron Anderson. We also finished 2 nd in one competition, as well as some great finishes in many more. Our team next year should be extremely strong and competitive. Returning seniors Aaron Anderson, Anna Muccio, and Sarah Zastrow, along with juniors Heard in the Halls Riley Domler, Jack Calkins, and Jack Spencer, round out the varsity squad. Our junior varsity squad will have returning sophomores Jack Rymanowski, Leland Pornschloegl, Johnathan Koop, and David Deaver. All of these athletes will be competing on a weekly basis in shooting competitions. Color Guard has remained busy. A six-person team held the US, Minnesota, CDH, and Brigade flags during the Twilight Parade. We led the parade for the Highland Park Little League and presented the colors at the Scoops for Troops Benefit in Eagan. We supported Honors Night and the annual Memorial Day Observance at Elmhurst Cemetery, along with a rifle squad from Crack Drill and a bugler. We plan to support at least two events this summer. The Orienteering team has had another successful season. We still have one meet left at press time, but it looks like we will retain the Conference crown. Captains Jack Fitzpatrick and Wyatt Stackpole did a great job. We are considering competing at the national level next year. In April, the Flight Club toured the State Patrol s flight operations and the Minneapolis Airport Tower, learning unique aspects of flight operations. This summer, Brain Aguilar, Samuel Gagnon, Andrew Houck, Jordan Grovum and Gabriel Andrzejek will represent CDH at the Annual Minnesota Boys State sponsored by the American Legion. The trio will spend a week at Minnesota Southwest State, Marshall, in an intensive week of study and involvement pertaining to government. The new leaders of the JROTC co- 13

14 Heard in the Halls curricular activities are Michael Seivert- Color Guard; Daniel Gainer- Crack Drill Team; Joseph Schroeder, Mark Daigle, and Leonard Gerten- Honor Guard; Aaron Anderson, Anna Muccio, and Sarah Zastrow- Air Rifle Team; Peter Cho-Flight Club; Nico Palomo- Regulation Drill; and Jordan Grovum and Luke Lacy - Orienteering. Eight of our cadets have been selected for the National Honor Society: Katie Baker, Jordan Grovum, Jack Hallman, Anna Muccio, Sophia Perron, Joseph Schroeder, Michael Seivert, and Christopher Seliski. These cadets will be members of the Link Crew next school year: Sam Gagnon, Dan Gainer, Dan Johnson, Mitchell O Brien, Jack Spencer, and Nia Rivera-Prescott. They will help with welcoming and helping the incoming 9 th grade class get accustomed to CDH. Our last formal event this year was the Junior ROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge ( JCLC), which ran from June 2-6, This Camp is conducted at Camp Wilderness, a Boy Scouts of America camp located near Park Rapids, MN. Participants included John Leininger, Luke Lacy, Michael Burke, Emmanuel Cabasug, Jack Spencer, Alexis Feist, Madeline Hathaway, Alyssa Wallace, Nicholas Neumann, Walter Cleveland, Jackie Radford, and Samantha Guevara. These students had the opportunity to challenge themselves physically and mentally. They will be selected for leadership positions ranging from company commander down to squad leader. Each student will be in a leadership position at least once. This is a great way for the young people to spread their leadership wings. ROTC scholarships pay for tuition, fees, books, and up to $16,000 in allowances over four years. Universities such as St. Thomas, St. John s, and Marquette add room and board to these scholarships to make them full-rides. Please understand that there is a military service obligation as a commissioned officer following graduation from college ROTC or an Academy. Websites with information, including the applications, are easy to find via a keyword search. Members of the Class of 2016 who are considering military scholarships should be working over the summer to complete their applications online. All the service academies and ROTC have clear checklists on their websites. Follow those and you will succeed. If you have questions, please LTC Fischer. It s never too late to join JROTC. If you or someone you know would like to learn more, please call the JROTC Office at We ll be around all summer. To add JROTC to your schedule, contact our registrar, Kathy Quitter, at Try the 1 st trimester to see if JROTC is the class for you. You ll be able to experience the Camp Ripley Encampment, the Fall Review, and several other events. There is no obligation. The uniform issue day for incoming 9 th graders and new upperclassmen is Monday and Tuesday, August 17-18, Upper class students already in JROTC should contact our office to arrange for a uniform exchange should they need it. The JROTC Department Athletics At the end of each school year it is time to celebrate members of the senior class and their many contributions to CDH--in and outside of the community. The success of these student/athletes is contingent upon many people: teammates, coaches, parents, sibling, relatives, teachers, facilitators, advisors, mentors, and friends. The cliché There is no I in Team is most important to remember as these individuals could not be recognized and honored without the help and success of all members of the team. In this issue of the Communicator the names of those seniors who were honored during the Honors Night Ceremony in May are listed. In addition to the CDH awards, seniors Max Jackson and Emma May were finalists for Steve Winfield Award, which recognizes and rewards academic, athletic, and community accomplishments among students of color attending private or public schools in St. Paul. At the Winfield Banquet held on June 7, Max, a three-sport student/athlete, received the Winfield Award. In May, senior Joe Rosga committed to play NCAA Division I basketball as a student/ athlete at University of Denver this fall. Congratulations to all senior student/athletes and their contributions and accomplishments to the CDH community. The Boys Tennis team had a strong run at the end of the year and advanced to the State Tournament. CDH drew #1 seed Mounds View for the first match. Mounds View proved to be too strong and beat us 6-1. The team was led by seniors Sam Gowan, Brandon Steer, Kevin Hottinger, Conor Leyden, and Carl Modl. The team earned gold level 14

Heard in the Halls Juniors Frank Kajer and Elias Weber earned All-Conference honors, with Kajer advancing to the State Tournament as an individual by finishing in fifth place overall in the Section 4AA tournament. In the State Tournament, Frank shot 84 on day one and 94 on day two for a total of 178 for the tournament. The future is bright with four returning from our Section team and a group of 9 th and 10 th graders who have been improving all season. The Girls Golf team had a respectable year following last year s State appearance. In Conference play, the team finished 5 th, just a few points behind the runner up. Individually, sophomore Molly Ploetz was again awarded All-Conference finishing 6 th overall. Senior Kalay Kotasek received All-Conference Honorable Mention finishing 17 th overall. The team finished 6 th in 4AAA Sections. Molly Ploetz is represented the Raiders at the State Meet as an individual and finished in the middle of the 90 contestants. She shot a 89 on day one and 87 on day two for a total of 176 for the two-day tournament. Coach Chad Anderson is very proud of all the golfers who participated and would like to recognize the efforts and leadership of seniors Kalay Kotasek, Katherine Munson, Kim Boland, Natalie Ziegler, Liz Schneeman, and Sofie Crandell. The program was blessed to have alumni/ae supporters Doc Dolan 53 and Nora McGuire 73 work with our development team this year. The Girls Lacrosse team finished the year 8-6 and 2 nd in the Suburban East Conference. Two-time All-State goaltender, sophomore Elle Crawford, led the team in the nets and two-time All-State senior captain Sheala Osborne led the team in scoring. In non-conference competition, the team played top ranked teams with a come-from-behind win over Apple Valley. Five seniors, whose leadership was instrumental, graduated this year: Monica Whaley, Sheala Osborne, Mariah Krey, Caroline Greavu, and Rosie Pitera. The Girls Lacrosse team was awarded the Gold certificate for academics maintaining a 3.75 and above grade point average. Seniors Sheala Osborne and Monica Whaley received Adacemic All- American honors from US Lacrosse in The team is very talented and has a group of up and coming lacrosse players. The Comic Book Guy Presents at CDH On May 14, 2015, guest speaker Willie (the comic book guy) Mellen taught six periods of US History and English classes in the LMC. Through his exhibit of original cover art and a fascinating slideshow, Mellen took the students through the history of comic books to illustrate and analyze how the artists and writers dealt with censorship, racism, sexism, the politics of war and peace, and the efforts they made to expose the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This was Mellen s sixth year sharing his lifelong interest in comic books with CDH students. His presentation is a great opportunity for students and teachers alike to learn about American history and culture from a unique perspective, said social studies teacher Greg Poferl, who coordinated Mellen s appearance. Mellen is a national officer with the American Postal Workers Union. Students from Mamie Fabel s 9 th grade English class and Greg Poferl s US History class helped display a few examples of Mellen s collection. 17

Jack, with other club members Ethan Hennessy, David Jaksha, Mitchell O Brien, and Jack Rymanoski, have come together for several outings, including ice fishing at metro area lakes this winter. With the help of club advisors Jerry Macken, Chad Anderson and Peter Gleich, plans are being made for the group to fish various metro lakes this summer. Students interested in joining the Fishing Club should contact Jack Calkins for more information. The Fishing Club members include (l to r) Jack Calkins, Ethan Hennessy, David Jaksha, and Jack Rymanoski. 18

19 The Book Awards The Dartmouth, Harvard, and Yale Book Awards are presented annually to top juniors in high schools across the country. Three of Cretin-Derham Hall s top juniors were recognized in May 2015 for their outstanding work, both in and out of the classroom. Congratulations to Halle Sterling, the Dartmouth Book Award recipient, Madeline Kehoe, the Yale Book Award recipient, and Garrett Nelson, the Harvard Book Award recipient. Raiderbots Team 2450 Raiderbots, CDH s robotic team, placed 23 rd out of 60 teams competing at the Minnesota North Star Regional First Robotic Team Tournament, April 2-4, 2015, at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The team was selected to join the 5 th place alliance in the semifinal tournament and placed 6 th overall in the finals. This is a team best for the Raiderbots in the Regional Tournament. The team enjoyed a good year with strong sponsorships and lots of students joining the team. Next year s team is already off to a good start with strong leadership from a group of returning students. Crosby/Medellin Bake-Off Results CDH principal Mona Passman (l) with Halle Sterling The results of the Crosby/Medellin Bake-Off are in, with Markie Crosby s Blonde Brownies taking the top spot, while Becki Medellin s Cocoa brownies came in a distant second. The Bake-Off is conducted in each world language teacher s homeroom, where students vote for the best recipe. The students do not know who made what; the poll is anonymous. We started this crazy thing, Medellin explained, to create a sense of community in our homerooms. There have been six Bake- Offs, and Crosby has prevailed in six of them. Medellin, unfazed, is ready to challenge Crosby again next year. Markie Crosby (l) celebrates her Bake Off win while a disappointed Becki Medellin looks on. Garrett Nelson and Madeline Kehoe 19
