2 FROM THE COVER: Another Masterful Series Draws to a Close Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox return one last time as Inspector Lewis and Inspector Hathaway, investigating new cases of murder and other crimes in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. The final, eighth season of this long-running favorite will air Sundays, Aug at 9 pm. Whately was first cast as Robbie Lewis opposite the late John Thaw s Morse, on the forerunning Masterpiece drama, Inspector Morse. Reportedly, Whately and costar Fox (who plays Detective Sergeant James Hathaway) have decided to retire from their roles after 33 episodes,* so as not to outdo Thaw s Morse, which also ran for 33 episodes. Kevin Whately said: I feel incredibly fortunate to have shared a decade of fantastic worldwide success with Laurence and with the most brilliant crew, cast and production team anyone could wish for, and all that time with the loyal support of so many fans and of our backers ITV and WGBH Boston. Thanks everybody. What a ride it has been! Laurence Fox said: What an extraordinary ten years. I feel so lucky to have worked with absolutely the best crew in the business on Lewis. I will really miss hanging out with Kev for half the year. I am however fairly confident that he will not miss my flawless Geordie accent between takes. Thank you so much for watching and supporting us. The popular series concludes with a 90-minute episode, What Lies Tangled, airing Sunday, Aug. 21 at 9 pm. For Lewis this is not just any case he fears that if he doesn t impress CS Moody (Steve Toussaint), he ll never be rewarded with another contract on his return. With relations and motives as tangled as the knots David spent his life unraveling, Lewis is in a race against time not just to find a killer, but to save his career and his relationship too. * UK/ITV production episodes Catch a Wave ITV Studios for MASTERPIECE Kevin Whately (Inspector Lewis) and pathologist Laura Hobson (Clare Holman) near the end of Season 7. If the weather is anything like last summer we will be in for Hot Fun in the Summertime! That song by Sly and the Family Stone brings back such great memories of carefree summers, lake time with friends, drivein movies, cruising Riverside, Woodstock! Ahh, those were the days. Now I m all grown up; and while I still love that song, summertime fun is different. Fun is still being outside in the warm weather but now it s working in the garden and getting excited over the nine baby artichokes growing on my wintered-over plant. Fun is watching Growing a Greener World on Saturday mornings and learning how to make the ultimate tomato cage support system. Then it s fun to watch the cooking shows (America s Test Kitchen, Cook s Country, Jacques Pepin Heart and Soul, Mexico: One Plate at a Time and more) to see how to prepare all of my vegetables. Fun is also having friends for dinner, watching beautiful sunsets and having great conversations. If you are just now starting to fill up your summer calendar, I hope you will include KSPS in your plans because we re making plans for you and your family. On July 9th at River Park Square it s Character Day! We will have Nature Cat, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Aqua Duck and Buddy from Dinosaur Train on hand to entertain your little ones. On August 5th it s FitKids Day at the Ferris High School football field. We have a plethora of activities planned to engage, entertain and educate the kids while they have fun; plus Daniel Tiger and Bob the Builder will be on hand. For the bigger kids (aka adults) this summer we will, of course, continue covering the race to the White House, including in-depth coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions. To transport you away from your day-to-day life we have Season 2 of the Masterpiece s historical drama, Indian Summers. The scenery and costumes are incredible and as with all Masterpiece shows there is a history lesson included. Just because it s summer it doesn t mean you have to stop learning! These are just a few of the events and programs we are planning for you! As you can see, we are truly living our mission by providing you on-air, online and multimedia programs that entertain, engage and educate the communities we serve. Enjoy the summer and be sure to bring the kiddos out to have fun with us! All the best, Pati Dahmen Chair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors Contact KSPS: Toll-free in Spokane Web ksps@ksps.org 3

12 Road Trip! As you read this I ve just returned from a couple of days away from Spokane, attending a Board meeting for Humanities Washington. Since it s a statewide organization, we try to meet in different parts of the state once a year. This year, it was Winthrop. And that s where this story really starts. I ve been a Washington resident for 5 years. And for those of you who ve been with us for a while, those five years have seen tremendous growth and change for KSPS and our team. But I haven t seen much of the state and despite having transmitters and translators all over the region, most of those places have been just points on a map for me. Not anymore. AMONG I ve now seen the Chief Joseph Dam in Bridgeport, the Okanagan National Forest, the Bernard Hosey Sculpture at Twisp Works and the view of the Methow Valley from the Sun Mountain Lodge. I talked to people who were impacted by the devastating fires last summer and how, as a community, they ve worked hard to make things better than they were before. It was a great way to discover parts of the state I d never seen and would have been sorry to have missed. As I was driving home, I had three thoughts: This is why we need KSPS and PBS: to show you the places you ve never seen; to show you places you know but in a different way; and to tell the stories of the people that make those places what they are. And thanks to those translators and transmitters, we re able to bring that to all of the communities we serve. The diversity of the people, the lifestyles and the economies of our region put KSPS in the unique position to provide programs and perspectives to help us all learn more about each other. I need to get out more. So, as we approach our 50th Anniversary in 2017, I m going to try to spend more time finding out about the people and places where KSPS has been such a vital part of your lives. What I need from you is this: If there are places I should go to find out why you like/appreciate/support KSPS, to learn what s important to you and your community or just to meet someone who you think has a great idea or a great story let me know and I ll try to come visit. And I might bring a board member or a member of our team with me. This Listening Tour will start as soon as I start hearing from you and I look forward to seeing more of the places and the people who give us the means to be here for all of you. So, to quote The Monkees you d better get ready we may be coming to your town. Sincerely, Gary Stokes Gary Stokes KSPS President and General Manager Membership Campaign Thank-Yous We wish to thank the following groups, individuals and vendors for playing vital roles in the success of our June Membership Campaign: Groups Ecova Ignite! 13 FRIENDS We Love our Volunteers! April 27 was a special day at KSPS: we held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and had the honor of recognizing the dedicated people who make KSPS run. We couldn t do it without you! In fact, we have the numbers to prove it. Here is a look at KSPS voluntarism by the numbers over the last year: Number of hours staffing the front desk: 2,010 (!) Number of thank you gifts packaged & mailed: 10,463 Number of pledge drive telephone volunteers: 492 Number of pledge breaks hosted by our volunteer hosts: 94 Number of Annual Membership Surveys processed: 2,885 Number of Kids Calendar event entries prepared: 308 Number of mailings (thank-you letters, reminders) hand-inserted: 45,768 Number of hours working on the KSPS official newsletter, Facebook posts and weekly s: 200 Number of Board, Executive Committee and Community Advisory Board meetings: 24 and far more hours Number of volunteers helping out at events: 210 (Antiques Roadshow, Downton Abbey screenings, FitKids Day, Carl Maxey documentary screening) What does this all mean? Meet the 2016 KSPS Volunteer of the Year Next Page >> It means we save an incredible amount in expenses. It means our operations and fund-raising are more efficient and effective. It means our volunteers are in our communities, talking about KSPS, advocating for the value of this station and encouraging others to join you in support. Most importantly: it means KSPS can bring our viewers the best programming available 24/7. This station runs because of volunteers. You are the heart of KSPS Thank you! Our thanks also to the following businesses for contributing in-kind donations for our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon: Papa Murphy s Albertsons on South Hill 37th & Grand Peters & Sons Flowers and Gifts Auntie s Bookstore Craftsman Cellars Ferrante s MarketPlace Cafe MacKenzie River Pizza Qdoba Mexican Grill Rancho Viejo Mexican Restaurant River Park Square Spokane Indians Baseball In Memory of Thomas Hipple From Irvin and Janice Johnson Moscow, ID In Memory of Marion R. That s why your favorite KSPS programs depend on your support. The KSPS fiscal year ends on August 31 and we are working hard to meet our membership dollar goal by then. You are already doing so much with your membership in KSPS. If you have the ability, please consider an extra gift to help us reach our fiscal year-end goal. 14 Pati Dahmen, 2016 Volunteer of the Year At our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in April, Friends of KSPS Board President Pati Dahmen was introduced as the 2016 Volunteer of the Year. It is a vast understatement to say that Pati goes way beyond what could or should be expected of mere mortals. As President of our Board, Pati attends every Board and Committee meeting they are held multiple times each month. That adds up to a mighty impressive number of hours. She is our biggest cheerleader, both at the station and in her many roles around the region. She always has the success of KSPS at the forefront of her conversations, wherever they may take place. On top of all the Board activities, Pati volunteers to answer phones during our pledge drives, works a booth or tent at KSPS FitKids Day and other station outreach activities and is always there to offer her guidance or just a helping hand wherever needed. In addition to her tireless support of KSPS, Pati is co-owner of Ray s Demolition in Spokane and is actively involved with numerous other charitable organizations in the community ( downtime is obviously not a part of her vocabulary).
