2 Spring 2018 REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Registration for courses should be made in person at the Midland College Continuing Education office (Room 214), located at the Scharbauer Student Center. Mail-in registration will be accepted, but enrollment is based on a first-come, first-served process. All courses may be taken by any individual at least 50 years old for a one-time registration fee of $ Courses will be offered in three four-week sessions. Please help us by sharing this information with friends and acquaintances. The success of the program depends on the enrollment generated with each session. We will be happy to mail schedules to anyone interested. Call us at or fill out the form at the back of this schedule with any names you would like to add to our mailing list for the future. CLASS CANCELLATION In order to have the best situation possible for students and teachers, classes generally will be cancelled the Friday before the class begins if 10 people are not registered. Cancelling a class due to limited enrollment is standard procedure for the Continuing Education Department. Please have your friends register if you are anxious to take a class that may be cancelled. Some type of dance background is helpful but not necessary. Tap/clogging shoes make the class fun, but are not required. CONSTITUTION AND THE SUPREME COURT The class will review recent decisions of the Supreme Court, upcoming cases and the practical application of constitutional law. Issues are selected by students. CURRENT TOPICS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT Discussion based course regarding law enforcement topics. THE CONQUERORS - This course explores world conquerors and empires throughout history. We will study men of conquest and vision and the empires they helped to forge. Session 1 & 2: Normans, Saxons, Goths, and the shadow warriors within the forbidden forests of the Land of the Spear Germany. The Holy Roman Empire to the East and the growing threat of the conquering Sea Wolves, better known as the Vikings as they lay siege to Europe, Russia, and battle for supreme dominance of their Norse homelands. The end of the Viking and the dawn of the Normans. Conquerors Charlemagne, Rollo, Godfred, Erik the Red, Ivar the Boneless, Ingvar of Kiev, Ragnar Lothbrok, Rurik the Rus, Harold Hardrada, William of Orange/the Conqueror. Session 3: The Mongols, The Tsars of Russia, The Scottish Highlanders, and the Dawn of Napoleonic France. Conquerors Genghis Khan, Ivan the Great/Terrible, Catherine the Great, Peter the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte. GREAT MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS - Steven Spielberg once stated, If I weren t a director, I would want to be a film composer. This course explores the fascinating world of movie music and its contribution to awardwinning cinema. Film composers will include Alex North ( A Streetcar Named Desire, Spartacus ), Maurice Jarre ( Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago ), Henry Mancini ( The Pink Panther ) Jerry Goldsmith ( Planet of the Apes, Patton ), and John Williams ( Star Wars, many Harry Potter films), Contemporary artists will include James Horner ( Field of Dreams, Avatar ) Howard Shore ( Lord of the Rings ), Hans Zimmer ( Interstellar, The Lion King ), Thomas Newman ( Bridge of Spies, Saving Mr. Banks ), and many others. Many composers are credited with dozens, sometimes hundreds of scores for films and television. Excerpts from over 30 films and documentaries will be studied during the 3 sessions. LET S DANCE - A low-impact choreographed cardio dance class geared for those over 40. The music is from various genres with easy-to-follow moves. Tennis shoes and water needed. POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY Students choose the countries that they would like to study and learn about the culture, history, geography and politics. 3

5 Spring 2018 COLLEGE CLASSICS FACULTY Tori Baca has been tap dancing for over 51 years, performing as well as teaching. She thought it would be fun to share her expertise to create a fun and interesting workout. John Deats has served as the Director of the Fasken Learning Resource Center for many years. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Texas. He has had a lifetime interest in movies and music. He has provided various film classes for for over a decade. Frank De La O received a B.A. in History from Texas A&M University, an M.A. in History of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has taught at Midland College since August of Before teaching at MC, he worked as an Academic Advisor and adjunct instructor with MC as well as UTPB. Currently, he serves as the Department Chair of History at Midland College. Terry Gilmour is professor of government at Midland College. She received her Bachelor s and Master s degrees from West Texas A&M and her Ph.D. in Political Science from Texas Tech University. Nancy Hart worked full-time for many years at Midland College and now teaches as an adjunct. She uses this course to justify the hours she spends on the Internet. When she is not online, she lap swims, needlepoints, does puzzles and cares for a crew of canine teaching assistants. Richard McKee is the Chief of Police at the Midland College Police Department and has held that position since He has a total of 26 years of experience in all areas of law enforcement. Chief McKee holds a Master s degree from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin as well as a Master Peace Officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Chief McKee is an adjunct professor in Criminal Justice and he also oversees Emergency Management for Midland College. Mona Milam has taught various forms of dance exercise for 40 years but clogging is a new passion. Mona also teaches courses at COM Aquatics Inc. Allison Williford Adjunct Professor of History Allison Williford has been an educator in Midland, Texas for eleven years. She received her B.A. in history in 2002 and her M.A. in history in My passion in life is researching history and teaching history. 4
