Spring 2017 REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Registration for courses should be made in person at the Midland College Continuing Education office (Room 214), located at the Scharbauer Student Center.

2 Spring 2017 REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Registration for courses should be made in person at the Midland College Continuing Education office (Room 214), located at the Scharbauer Student Center. Mail-in registration will be accepted, but enrollment is based on a first-come, first-served process. All courses may be taken by any individual at least 50 years old for a one-time registration fee of $ Courses will be offered in three four-week sessions. Please help us by sharing this information with friends and acquaintances. The success of the program depends on the enrollment generated with each session. We will be happy to mail schedules to anyone interested. Call us at or fill out the form at the back of this schedule with any names you would like to add to our mailing list for the future. CLASS CANCELLATION In order to have the best situation possible for students and teachers, classes generally will be cancelled the Friday before the class begins if 10 people are not registered. Cancelling a class due to limited enrollment is standard procedure for the Continuing Education Department. Please have your friends register if you are anxious to take a class that may be cancelled. COLLEGE CLASSICS MISSION STATEMENT at Midland College provides a low cost, non-credit, opportunity for citizens fifty and over to broaden their knowledge in areas of interest in an informal educational setting. This is an introduction to methods and theory in the excavation and interpretation of material remains of past cultures. Major topics to be examined are the emergence of Archaeology as a discipline; archaeological methods, techniques, and theories; human evolution and variation; world pre-history; development of hunter-gather societies; origins of food production; the development of civilization, complex societies, enigmatic states, and empires. CLOGGING A healthy low impact aerobic workout combined with beginning/intermediate clogging routines. Some type of dance background is helpful but not necessary. Tap/clogging shoes make the class fun, but are not required. THE ART AND PRACTICE OF LOVE POETRY Poets rhapsodize about love. We will explore several famous love poems, and work to craft three poems in this class. BEGINNING CLOGGING Introduction to clog dancing. No dance experience necessary. Shoes need to be leather soled to begin class. Clogging shoes are optional. CONSTITUTION AND THE SUPREME COURT The class will review recent decisions of the Supreme Court, upcoming cases and the practical application of constitutional law. Issues are selected by students. HISTORY OF THE COLD WAR Traces the roots and the progression of the Cold War from the end of WWII through the late 1980 s/early 1990 s. POETRY OF WAR War changes humanity and poets reflect these changes in eloquent language. We will explore several poets as they explain their emotions beginning with the Civil War and ending with Vietnam. POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY - Students will choose the countries that they wish to discuss. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AMERICA AT THE DAWN OF CHANGE This course explores America ( ) at the dawn of industry, capital growth, mass communication, class diversity, and modernization. LET S DANCE - A low-impact choreographed cardio dance class geared for those over 40. The music is from various genres with easy-to-follow moves. Tennis shoes and water needed. POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY Students choose the countries that they would like to study and learn about the culture, history, geography and politics. RANDOM PATHWAY THROUGH CINEMA, PART 2 This course allows students to help chart a pathway through the fascinating world of movies. Some of the best films of many genres, eras, and nationalities will be sampled, including Westerns, fantasy, drama, musicals, comedies and romance. Actors will include 3

5 Spring 2017 contemporaries such as Emma Thompson, Daniel Radcliffe, Helen Mirren, and Hugh Laurie, as well as superstars from the past (Bogart, Hepburn, Bergman, Stewart). Students will learn of many sources for movie reviews, cinema history, biographies, the art and science of making movies and more. SENIORS: INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW Discussion-based class that will include recommendations of self-defense for seniors, how to recognize and avoid scams and also discussing current topics in law enforcement. COLLEGE CLASSICS FACULTY Tori Baca has been tap dancing for over 51 years, performing as well as teaching. She thought it would be fun to share her expertise to create a fun and interesting workout. John Deats has served as the Director of the Fasken Learning Resource Center for many years. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Texas. He is a lifelong student of film and likes to help students explore connections between media of many formats, including print, audiovisual, and electronic media for authoritative resources. This is Deats 10th year as a instructor. Terry Gilmour is professor of government at Midland College. She received her Bachelor s and Master s degrees from West Texas A&M and her Ph.D. in Political Science from Texas Tech University. Nancy Hart worked full-time for many years at Midland College and now teaches as an adjunct. She uses this course to justify the hours she spends on the Internet. When she is not online, she lap swims, needlepoints, does puzzles and cares for a crew of canine teaching assistants. Dr. David P. Hopkins, Jr., received his B.A. in history from Michigan State University, M.A. in history from Wayne State University and his Ph.D. in history from Wayne State University. He has taught at Midland College since July of Before teaching at MC, he was a GTA at Wayne State University in Detroit and he has been an adjunct at both the university and community college level since Dr. Paula Marshall-Gray grew up in the oil fields of West Texas mainly in Odessa and Kermit. She has been at Midland College since 2007 where she teaches U.S. History, Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, and Physical Anthropology. Before coming to MC, Paula taught Cultural Anthropology, Understanding Multicultural American, Native American Culture and History, and Doing Ethnography at Texas Tech University for 12 years. She received her PhD from Texas Tech in History. She wrote about oilfield worker culture for her dissertation. Her MA is also from Texas Tech in Anthropology. She interned for the National Park Service at Fort Davis, Texas and wrote about the many cultures that lived in Fort Davis with a specialization in the Apaches of Trans-Pecos Texas. Richard McKee is the Chief of Police at the Midland College Police Department and has held that position since He has a total of 24 years of experience in all areas of law enforcement. Chief McKee holds a Master s degree from the University of Texas Permian Basin as well as a Master Peace Officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Chief McKee is an adjunct professor in Criminal Justice and he also oversees Emergency Management for Midland College. Mona Milam has taught various forms of dance exercise for 40 years but clogging is a new passion. Mona also teaches courses at COM Aquatics Inc. Lynda Webb has a master s in English/Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso. She has written and published many short stories and essays. Words are her passion, but she has to make a living by teaching administrating reading and writing education at Midland College. Allison Williford is an adjunct professor and has been an educator in Midland, Texas for ten years. She received her B.A. in history in 2002 and her M.A. in history in
