1 The Newsletter of Saint Mark s Parish JUNE G E T S E T... G O!! From the Rector The Summer Day By Mary Oliver Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I meanthe one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and downwho is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life? Welcome, summer! I have been especially impatient for its arrival this year. This has mostly to do with my daughter Lucy having been away at college in Vermont. She ll be home in a few more days, and her return will make the coming of summer especially sweet this time around. But I cannot remember a time when I wasn t more than ready for June to show up, and bring with it a break in routines, a breath of warm fresh air, the swapping of shoes for sandals, or better yet, for bare feet! Sun and sand and water, popsicles and watermelon, sleeping in and slowing down: welcome, summer! Mary Oliver reminds us that leisure provides more than rest. Taking time and paying attention allow us to engage the creation and our Creator in ways not possible when we are running full steam ahead. So spend these summer days, as best you can, noticing the precious gift of each day, the treasure being offered in each moment. Faithfully, Carri+

2 Saint Mark s presents: Summer Adventure Camp Come learn about God and God's people, and some of their amazing adventures together. 3 year olds through rising 5th graders are invited to join us for five days of fun. We will learn, sing, create, and play together as we hear stories of adventure from throughout the Bible. Carri and it will be held at her home. It will be indoors and outdoors, so wear comfortable clothing and don't forget to bring a light sweater or jacket for the cool evening breeze. Rev. Carri will take care of everything; just come, relax, and enjoy the fellowship. Parking is available on the street. Please RSVP early in order for Rev. Carri to plan for the group. If possible by Thursday, June 9, or no later than Sunday, June 12. PROJECT: Rev. Carri is hosting the meal, so please let's donate the amount we usually spend eating at a restaurant and a gift donation (TBA).

SUNDAY, June 5 We ll join together for one celebratory service at 10:00 a.m. next Sunday, welcoming Bishop Diane Jardin Bruce and rejoicing with Ryan Schroeder, Jake McCann, Jacob McKinney, Nicholas Bass, as they make a mature commitment of faith in the Rite of Confirmation. This year, 16 parishioners volunteered to serve as prayer partners for our college students. Throughout the school year, these faithful members of our congregation prayed for our students; many of them also exchanged cards, s, and small gifts. This new program was deeply appreciated by our college students and their parents. Please join us in thanking our prayer partners: Roberta Goodman, Debra Johnson, Lynn Marini, Desiree Cardenas, Anne Brown, Mara Lague, Betty Butler, Robin Ross, Sylvia Sweeney, Christina Thom, Paula Walker, Erik Forrester, Gini Berry, Diane Killgore, Melissa Schaper, and Carol Peters. With only one college graduate in the Class of 2016, and 10 new students heading to college in the Fall, we are looking for more folks to join our team. We closed up the book fair after a fun-filled 3 days of watching kids, parents, grandparents and church members find the perfect books to read in the coming months. We are also proud to announce that school and church members partnered together to contribute 75 new books to children at Door of Hope. Door of Hope helps families transition from homelessness to stability. Thank you for your support!!! ~Michelle Chino Healing Conversations: Saturday, June 11, 9:00 a.m. Brown Library This is an intentional conversation, beginning within Saint Mark s, to explore how we can create space for deep listening and dialogue in our community in a time of deep division and misunderstanding that lead to fear and violence. Vestry members Debbie DeCaro, Valerie Barth, Bob Ross, Diane Carey- Schmitz and Pr. Carri will meet for breakfast in the Brown Library at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, to begin to engage this important work. All are welcome to join us that morning. Endowment Message: From the LA Times on April 28, 2016: "How could someone rich and famous like Prince die without a will?...prince was extremely hands-on with the business side of music...yet he neglected to decide what would happen to his estate after death, leaving behind unanswered questions instead of a plan.... One thing is certain: Attorneys will benefit lavishly, as will the federal government and the state of Minnesota. His heirs -- whoever they are -- will pay a hefty estate tax that could have been minimized with a sensible estate plan that included charitable giving...estate plans aren't expensive, particularly compared with the trouble they ward off. In California, a perfectly acceptable will is one that's drafted completely in your handwriting with your signature at the bottom. You don't even need a notary. Or you can hire an attorney, who'll probably cost less than you imagine and can help sort out any thorny family issues, like planning for a disabled child or parent. An attorney can also minimize tax consequences and maximize the money your heirs get. If you die without an estate plan, your loved ones could end up in probate court...don't be like Prince -- or Pablo Picasso or Abraham Lincoln. If you do not have a will or estate plan, get busy. Plan for taxes. Decide who will be in charge. Decide who gets what. Decide not to let the government, or attorneys, get your inheritance." Please consider a bequest to the Endowment Fund of Saint Mark's Parish when creating or updating your Will or Trust.
