Worth. These students qualified for the PSIA State Meets by placing first or second individually in one or more contests at the PSIA District Meet held at 23 area tournaments. Celebrating its 15th anniversary as a non-profit 501(c)(3) service corporation for private schools, PSIA serves 260 member schools this year and continues to provide the most comprehensive academic extracurricular program in the nation for privately-schooled students in grades 1-8, offering 19 contests, with awards in 60 grade-level events. Contests include a wide spectrum of advanced curricula in mathematics, science, social studies, listening, reading, vocabulary, speaking, writing, art, music and drama. One purpose of the PSIA academic program is to use competition to further develop students higher order thinking skills. Inspiring student achievement through academic competition remains our primary goal, said Dr. Patricia Walters, PSIA Executive Director. In addition, PSIA serves to honor and reward academic achievements, while ensuring that the overall purposes of the program are to use competition as a tool in the preparation of students for citizenship and successful adulthood, and to provide incentive to excel in academics. Eight scholarship awards, ranging from $100 to $1500, were presented to worthy 8th grade students in 2011 through the PSIA scholarship program. Approximately 50,000 privately-schooled students throughout Texas, including homeschooled children and public charter schools, are currently being served through membership in the PSIA program. PSIA growth has presented challenges, but member school participants continue to laud this program as it inspires their students to reach their highest academic goals each year. The One-Act Play Contest consists of four Area meets and a State Meet scheduled to be held at Prince of Peace Christian School in Carrollton (north of Dallas and Fort Worth) on Saturday, May 19. 3 The PSIA Code Participants will 1. Participate in contests in the spirit of fairness and sportsmanship, observing all rules both in letter and in spirit; 2. Sponsor and advise individuals and teams without resorting to unethical tactics, attempting to skirt the rules, or any other unfair action that detracts from sound educational and moral principles; 3. Accept decisions of officials and judges without protest and extend protection and courtesy to officials; 4. Accept decisions of officials in matters not related directly to competition; 5. Regard opponents as guests or hosts while placing personal and/or team integrity above victory at any cost. Maintain grace and poise in victory or defeat; 6. At all times, ensure that competition is relative to a more important overall educational effort, using competition as a tool in the preparation of students for citizenship and successful adulthood.

9 PSIA STATE MEET QUESTIONS & ANSWERS How do I enter? Entries come directly from the District Director to the State office following your district meet. Entry fees for the State Meet are $8 per entry per event, payable to PSIA and sent to the state office (PO Box 2481, Grapevine, T 76099). Entry fees MUST be paid prior to 7 days before the meet. Your school will notify you if these funds are required for your entries. ONE CHECK THAT INCLUDES ALL ENTRIES FROM YOUR SCHOOL IS PREFERRED. No certification by your school is required. Results from your District Meet serve as your entry certification. Fees should be collected by your campus PSIA administrator. Schools and individual with unpaid invoices will not be permitted to participate. Your school may use fundraisers or activity funds to provide the fees. Entry fees pay for your child s health and accident insurance while visiting the TCU campus, and they defray rental costs and other expenses of the tournament, including awards and judges for several events. Where do I register? Contestants do not need to register anywhere other than in the rooms in which they will be competing, and this is when they answer here at roll call. Required meeting for State Meet lead Contest Directors will be held in the Moudy Hall, room 141N, where assembly and roll call will be taken at 8:00 a.m. Directors may pick up their packets prior to the morning meeting also from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the TAB ROOM (Scharbauer Room 1007) or we may hold packets for you until 30 minutes prior to the contest in the tab room. All Contest Directors and Judges of Speech Events pick up badges and packets in the TAB Room (S 1007) All OTHER persons filling positions should be checked in and pick up a CONTEST OFFICIAL badge at a station set up in the Scharbauer Hall Foyer BEFORE going to their designated rooms on the day of the tournament. What if I cannot come to State Meet? Notify your principal immediately if you are unable to attend State Meet. Your principal should then notify IN the first alternate s school and the PSIA state office to verify the entry change. Remember that no substitutions may be made at State Meet. Schools are encouraged to send the first alternate, if possible, in each contest. If a first or second place individual is absent, only the first alternate from that district may take the absent student s place in competition. Contest directors will have these students names. What if I have a conflict with another contest? CONFLICT WITH VERIFICATION: Please have one adult from your school attend the verification period if you have a conflict. Tests will be released to students, coaches or parents at the end of the verification period only at the MAY 5th State Meet, and awards will be presented at this time. Tests must be held for all contestants and returned to the Tab Room at the APRIL 28 State Meet. CONFLICT WITH SPEECH: contestants who advance to the final round may be placed in an early speaking position in order that they may compete in two contests. The PSIA state office AND the alternate s school must be notified by the Campus Director in writing ( preferred) at least 14 days prior to the meet if you have students advancing in a speech contest and a conflicting contest (final round included). What should I wear? Be comfortable, but be ready to have your picture taken. Please notify PSIA if you or your child does not wish to be included in a photograph that may be published on the PSIA website. In Speech events, regular nice clothing must be worn. Uniforms may be worn in all other events. The PSIA State Championship t- shirt will be available for advance purchase through the order form enclosed, or in the foyer of Scharbauer Hall at the meet. School uniforms may be worn by participants in all contests, except POETRY, Impromptu Speaking, Modern Oratory, & Storytelling. Anyone may wear a PSIA State Champion t-shirt at State. My name is spelled incorrectly. Please tell your contest director. Be sure that your campus director spells it correctly on the district form. How can I be at the right place at the right time? Follow the Official schedule ed to each school. PLEASE do not try to use a partial schedule made up by someone other than PSIA. Ask for the PSIA schedule. Roll is called before each contest, and it is imperative that contestants be on time in their testing rooms. Schedules and Speech Sections will be posted in Scharbauer Hall on the TCU campus, in case you misplace the ones sent to your school. You didn't answer my question. If you need further information, call the PSIA State Office toll free at (888) 972-PSIA or PSIA phones will be answered up to 1 day before the tournament. The ID is not mandatory, but it does help to identify your vehicle and its purpose on the campus. Security is tighter on university campuses these days, and we want to do everything possible to ensure correct identification of vehicles sponsored by PSIA.! - On Saturday at the TCU campus, you may park in any space that is not restricted by the words AT ALL TIMES or HANDICAPPED, or by time specifications. All other spaces are open on Saturdays. Parking lots ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE adjacent to the buildings in which most of the tournament will be held. All buildings in which contests will be held are in close proximity to each another. The most ample parking may be found in Coliseum area. 17 REGULATIONS TCU requires conference groups to adhere to all of TCU s regulations, policies, guidelines, and all local, state, and federal laws concerning health, safety, and public order. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in the forfeiture of the privilege of using TCU facilities and services, or termination of TCU agreements. TCU regulations include, but are not limited to, the following in TCU buildings and on TCU property: Smoking is prohibited in all buildings. Youths require direct supervision at all times while on campus. Attaching any object to any TCU premise by tape, nail, screw, or alteration of the premises in any manner whatsoever without prior written permission from Conference Services is not permitted. No signs are to be attached to the outside walls of any TCU facility without prior written permission. All visitors are expected to comply with TCU traffic regulations. Parking is allowed only in the whitelined spaces. There is no parking or driving on ANY non-paved area. All facility and residence hall rooms must be left in the condition found. Any damages or excessive clean-up will be billed after the event. No furniture may be moved out of the residence hall rooms or from lounge areas into individual rooms. TCU prohibits alcoholic beverages in all areas of the campus, without written permission. Residents of legal age twenty-one (21) or over may possess and consume alcoholic beverages in their residence hall rooms only. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in all hallways, stairways, elevators, lobbies, lounges, recreation areas, restrooms, and all other areas of residence halls. Kegs and any other containers larger than one gallon used for alcoholic beverages are not permitted anywhere on campus. The illegal possession, manufacture, distribution, use or sale of any quantity of any drug, narcotic, or any controlled substance or being illegally under the influence of any drug, narcotic, or any controlled substance is prohibited. Tampering with the fire system or with fire fighting equipment is a violation of the Fort Worth City Ordinance. EVERYONE MUST evacuate the building when an alarm is sounded. All violators are subject to persecution and fine ($400) by the University as well as city authorities. Possession, ignition or detonation of any explosive device, fireworks liquid, or object which is flammable or which would cause damage by fire or explosion to person or property is prohibited, this includes any hazardous materials, and any and all firearms. Candles and open flames may not be used in any building without permission from Conference Services. No shoes with cleats are allowed in any facility. Only white-soled court shoes (tennis shoes) are allowed on University Recreation Center Gym floors. No cut-offs are allowed in the University Recreation Center Pool. All security arrangements must be made through TCU Conference Services. The number of officers required for each event is at the discretion of the TCU Police.

19 For 1 st Alternates Only Here are answers to questions you may have about your role as alternate to the PSIA Academic State Meet How soon will I know if I can compete? Most qualifiers who cannot attend will first notify their school principal or PSIA campus director, who will then notify the 1 st alternate and the State Director IN WRITING (in one Cc d PREFERRED) as soon as they know they will not compete at State. In case of emergencies, however, your school may be notified as late as Friday or Saturday before competition, or there may not be time to notify the PSIA state office at all. Our advice is to be prepared and to sit in on roll call for your event, in case an absence from your district does occur. Only 1 st alternates are eligible to take the place of a 1 st or 2 nd place qualifier in the event in which they competed at their district meet. Remember that in Creative Writing, Music Memory, Number Sense, and Storytelling, ONLY the first place student advances; therefore, the 2 nd place winner is the 1 st alternate. Who will call me? Your principal or PSIA campus director will notify you. If you get the message through informal channels, have your principal call the State Director and the other school to check. Only the school administrator (or home-school/individual parent) may notify the State Director and the alternate s school that a contestant will not be attending the State Meet, AND we will need to receive this information in writing ( ) from this official. Am I eligible to fill any vacant slot in the contest? No. You may only compete if a qualifier from your district meet is unable to participate in the contest to which you have been named alternate. Should I attend State Meet anyway? It's up to you, your parents, your academic coach, and your school administration. If your school is sending contestants and your attendance is not an undue financial burden, State Meet is an educational, learning experience. May I sit in the contest room or take the test if I come? Alternates are not allowed to sit in the contest room after roll call, or to take the tests. You are welcome to attend the performance events: Prose Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Modern Oratory, Storytelling and One-act Play. State Meet is full of opportunities for enrichment through performance events, at the museums, exhibits, and activities on campus listed in the Winner s Packet. Ask your coach for this information.
