The new rule is he resul of a wo-senence law ha easily passed hrough Congress las year. The Educaion Deparmen originally se July 1 as he deadline for submiing he form, bu financial-aid direcors complained of oo lile ime o handle he paper work. A monh ago, he Educaion Deparmen moved he deadline o Sep., bu his week he deparmen again exended he deadline one monp.. o Oc. 1. Under he law, male sudens beween he ages of 18 and 22 will have o submi a form o he Office of Financial Aid saing ha hey have regisered wih he Selecive Service. Sudens born before 1960 will have o indicae ha fac on he form. Bu being a "conscienious objecor" is no lised as a reason for failing o regiser. Excep for addiional paper work, Russo said he new law "is no a problem a Nore Dame," where abou half he sudens receive federal aid - especially from he Guaraneed Suden Loan program. Of he forms already submied o he financial-aid office, no male suden has refused o regiser. Tha means no aid will have o be denied, Russo said. The federal aid programs linked o sudens' regisraion saus are: he GSL, he Pell Gran, he Work/Sudy program, he Naional Direc Suden Loan and he Supplemenal Educaion Opporuniy Gran. Hofman, dean of he Freshman Year of Sudies, said he freshmen are encouraged o be open and friendly, and no o remain isolaed. There are 250 ransfer sudens hisyear, down considerably from 390 las year. Faher Michael Heppen, direcor of housing, said ha he sudy lounges will be resored as soon as oher rooms on campus become available. Heppen said ha he 94 female and 136 male ransfer sudens awaiing on-campus housing will be aken care of afer all he freshmen are placed in regular rooms. Heppen said he does no like he idea of aking he sudy lounges away from he sudens, bu he considers i a beer idea han a housing loery. The loery was avered las April when Suden Governmen Housing Commissioner Jorge Valencia suggesed ha sudy lounges in some of he women's dorms and in Flahner and Grace halls be used as dorm rooms. Off-campus Housing Direcor Broher John Campbell said ha alhough here is sill a waiing lis for he Campus View and Turle Creek aparmen complexes, here is an ample supply of aparmens available in oher areas. A housing shorage has forced 19 Sain Mary's freshmen o live ern porarily in dorm parlors, leaving oher residens wih almos no recreaional space. McCandless' basemen will house nine sudens, six will say in he LeMans gues rooms and four will be placed in one of Holy Cross' hree parlors unil permanen housing becomes available.
