The event was a semi-formal event with clients and family members representing all five day programs. Clients, families and staff gathered at Mississauga Convention Center to meet and mingle with one another, enjoy a sit-down, served meal and danced to the tunes of our Dean Martin impersonator. It was a fun-filled afternoon where clients and caregivers alike had their dancing shoes on and kept the dance floor buzzing. There were props galore as our volunteers snapped photos of partygoers goofing around in the photo booth. This year s event was a success and we hope to do it again next year, and hope to see more of our clients and caregivers out enjoying with us. 2 P A G E 2 The results are in from our Client and Caregiver Experience Surveys and here are some highlights! Overall: Clients are happy with way they are treated by staff and the programs provided to them Caregivers are happy with staff communication and the way their loved ones are treated ADS reduces stress related to caregiving Suggestions received included: More exercise, physiotherapy, hand massages, aromatherapy, pet therapy, speech therapy Stimulating games like brain teasers, puzzles, trivia Fun stuff like karaoke, dancing, musicians, comedians Cooking of cultural, ethnic and healthy foods Earlier start time, more one on one and short-term overnight stays The information you have shared will be included in our plan for the Person Family Centered Care approach plan for this year. 3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 3 Recognizing Family Caregivers Caring at Home Recognizing Caring Canadians The first Tuesday of April is National Caregiver Awareness Day! This day recognizes the valuable work of informal caregivers and celebrates the commitment in helping keep seniors and adults in need of care in the community and in their homes longer. As we work in partnership with you, we can contribute to your self-care journey and the quality of life of others. It is important to raise awareness, engage in conversations and to share lived experiences through storytelling and reflection. According to The Change Foundation document A Profile of Family Caregivers in Ontario (2016), there is an estimated 3.3 million Ontarians providing care to a loved one, which is 29% of the provincial population. Approximately 3 out of 4 caregivers (76% or 2.5 million people) reported that they try to balance caregiving and paid employment. Caregivers are regularly challenged with balancing work priorities and care responsibilities which can often lead to emotional and physical exhaustion, and self-neglect. As every caregiver s journey is different, the need for support and resources differs as well. So how can we help? At times, it could be difficult for Caregivers to ask for help and may feel overwhelmed when balancing work and family responsibilities. This may be the time for you to reflect on your needs for shared conversations with caregivers experiencing similar feelings. You are not alone Caregivers are encouraged to connect with the Social Worker, Elisabeth Catalano-Bon, at ext or participate in Walking the Path Together to share experiences and stories. Nurses Corner at the homes has been based on Winter Safety and sharing information about Heart Health and Tax Related information. It is important for you to ensure that your loved one has their income tax filed too. Your loved one may be entitled to tax savings or other benefits that are offered to low income seniors. Income Tax usually should be filed by the end of April This year April 30th falls on a Sunday so the deadline is extended to midnight May 1, The Revenue Canada web address to read more about filing income taxes is: The home page of the Canada Revenue Agency provides many links that may help you in completing income taxes. There is basic information as well as links to specific forms you might need, information about assistance for low income persons filing as well as disability related tax benefits. A person with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions may be eligible for the disability tax credit (DTC). 5 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 P A G E 5 Nurses Corner Continued Heart Health A variety of lifestyle choices including food and alcohol consumption, smoking habits, oral health, chronic levels of stress and depression, sleep habits, and of course, exercise, affect our risk for developing Coronary Heart Disease. The Adult Day Service staffs keep your loved one engaged in activities that help keep them their hearts in good working order healthy. Diet is also important. Try out the healthy salad that is printed below. It makes a great lunch meal for those of us on the go. A Yummy Healthy Salad 7 servings Prep 15 min / Cook 4 min Crunchy carrots and edamame (soy beans) make a perfect pair for this salad. The Asian-flavoured dressing will balance the flavours of these favourite vegetables. Ingredients 1 bag (500 g) frozen, shelled edamame (soy beans) 3 large carrots (about 500 g/1 lb), peeled and grated 45 ml (3 tbsp) chopped fresh coriander or parsley 30 ml (2 tbsp) tahini (sesame seed paste) or peanut butter 30 ml (2 tbsp) sodium-reduced soy sauce 15 ml (1 tbsp) unseasoned rice vinegar 15 ml (1 tbsp) minced fresh ginger 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 ml (1/4 tsp) Asian garlic chili paste or hot pepper sauce Directions 1. In saucepan of boiling water, cook edamame for 4 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water. Drain well and place in large bowl. Add carrots and coriander. 2. Dressing: In small bowl, whisk together tahini, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, garlic and chili paste. Drizzle over edamame and carrot mixture and toss well to coat. Tip: Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Some tahini pastes and peanut butters are very thick so you may need to add 15 to 30 ml (1 to 2 tbsp) of warm water to thin out the dressing. Nutritional info per serving (3/4 cup/175 ml) Calories: 107 Protein: 8 g, Total fat: 6 g, Saturated fat: 1 g, Cholesterol: 0 mg, Carbohydrates: 8 g, Fibre: 4 g, Sugars: 2 g, Added sugars: 0 g, Sodium: 165 mg, Potassium: 316 mg

6 P A G E 6 Tips against Frauds or Scams All frauds or scams should be reported regardless of how little or how much money was taken. Your money may not be returned however; you can help put a STOP to others becoming targets of fraud! Keep all documents in a safe place and if you don t need them, don t carry them with you (Birth Certificate, SIN, passport) Don t share your PIN, account numbers or passwords with anyone Shredding old bills is the best way to dispose of them Be safe on the computer, especially when pop-up windows ask for personal information Don t give out your credit card number, bank account or personal information to anyone over the phone, at the door or on the internet unless you are familiar with the contact person or you have requested the interaction with a specific organization Do not sign an agreement, contract or purchase anything without giving yourself some time to read and understand all the fine details If someone you don t know calls and asks for money DON T! Before hiring someone to do some work around your home, ask for proof of identity and references and be sure to check them Just some important tips to help you and your loved one stay safe.
