You can reach Betty at December Holiday Luncheon Thanks again to the UCR Child Development Center 3 rd grade children for providing their wonderful voices, personalities, and holiday song at our December Luncheon. And thanks to their teachers, assistants, and parents for the opportunity to see and hear them again. This year we donated two books to the Center s Library for all to enjoy. Lots of info today! Les Martin Scholarships Speaking of donations, thank you ALL for your contributions toward our annual student scholarship awards. This year our Association is able to make two $1,500 awards. We hope that each award will assist in the support of two students chosen by our campus Financial Aid Office. When those students have been chosen, we hope to invite them to one of our Luncheons to share how they may have benefited. UC Travel Although you have a number of choices for travel planning and booking, were you aware that our parent, Council of University of California Retiree Associations (CUCRA), can also provide for additional opportunities. You can find more information about the UC Travel program and the current 2013 offerings by going to the following website: Health Care Facilitators Just a quick note that a decision has been made at the President's Office to retain the HCF program. The message was received from Joe Lewis, director of the Retirement Administration Service Center, and is in response to CUCRA Chair Lee Duffus request for clarification about the status of this issue. Human Resources Vice President Dwaine Duckett has developed a funding plan and informed the campus/lab HR officers in January. 3 View Online at 3 Remembering Cliff Wurfel.. Cliff Wurfel, past president of the UCR Retirees Association, died on Dec. 14, Cliff was a pioneer on the UCR Campus. He was one of the founding librarians, joining the campus in 1957 as an Assistant Cataloger. He and a team of library staff began cataloging the Library's collection in the old Extension Station even before the Library's original building, one of the first on campus, was completed. Cliff became Head of Cataloging and later was the Library's first Head of Special Collections. Several significant collections were started during Cliff's tenure as Special Collections Librarian, including the Sadakichi Hartmann Collection, the B. Traven Collection and the J. Lloyd Eaton Collection of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and Utopian Literature. The Eaton Conference, begun in 1979, in now an important international event. Cliff received his Librarian Degree from UC Berkeley. He also graduated from San Jose State. Prior to coming to UCR, Cliff was a Librarian at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and at the UCLA Biomedical Library. A veteran, Cliff served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan in He retired from UCR in He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church After retirement he enjoyed traveling and took many trips abroad. Cliff is remembered by his colleagues for his knowledge of libraries, languages, the publishing community, Riverside and UCR history. He enjoyed traveling, books and music. He was 85. A memorial service for Cliff has been scheduled for March 14, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church. The address is 3847 Terracina Drive, Riverside, CA. UCR Retiree Elections Yes, it s getting closer to that time of year again as June elections will be arriving faster than we think. This year two positions, that of President and that of Treasurer are up for election. As you know, we also still have an open position for Secretary. Please start thinking now of who you might wish to consider for nomination, and don t forget about considering yourself. To remain a viable organization we truly need your support, assistance, and just a little of your time. If you have any questions about the positions or you would like to nominate someone, please let our Nominating Committee Chair, Joan Dillon (951) know your thoughts.

5 View Online at 5 Spring CUCRA/CUCEA Meeting Les Martin, President of UCR Staff Retirees & Tony Norman President of UCR Emeriti Many of you may know of the existence on each of the UC Campuses of separate formal organizations for their Retired Staff and for their Emeriti faculty. On each campus there are elected officers for each group. The authors of this document are currently your UCR Presidents of the Staff and Faculty organizations. But that is only half the story!! As is the case with the 10 Academic Senates that exist on each campus, they each have elected Chairs which meet monthly in Oakland as the UC Council of the Academic Senate. There is a comparable construct for the pairs of officers (2 Staff and 2 Emeriti) for each group from each campus, except UC-Merced. Their formal titles are Council of UC Retired Association (CUCRA) and the Council of UC Emeriti Association (CUCEA). They collectively represent all UC campuses (except Merced), the National Labs and the Office of the President. The CUCEA and CUCRA meet on campuses two times per year; once in the fall and once in the spring. The fall rotations include UCSC, UCSF, UCB and UCD, while the spring rotations include UCSB, UCLA, UCR, UCI and UCSD. Thus each campus is given the opportunity to be the host for the meeting every 4-5 years. UCR was last the host in spring of Thus UCR is honored to be the host of the 1.5 day meeting of CUCEA and the CUCRA this spring on April 23, 24!!! The meeting will be held in the HUB room 355 starting at noon Tuesday April 23 rd and closing at ~ 4 PM on Wednesday April 25 th. We anticipate that there will be approximately 45 attendees. Most delegates will be staying at the Mission Inn. On Tuesday late afternoon there will be a tour of the UCR Arts Block, which includes the California Museum of Photography, the Sweeney Art Gallery and the Barbara and Art Culver Center. On Tuesday evening we will have a banquet dinner in the Mission Inn. Volunteers Needed!! We are in the process of arranging for the meeting needs and would like to request your assistance of volunteer support to help with our registration table on either or both days. The registration table will provide our attendees with information packets on the daily schedules, name badges, etc. Any amount of time that you are able to give would be greatly appreciated. 6 6 View Online at Bridge Club Report We had an unusual session in November in that we had a tie. Ann Roever (sub) came in 1st, Pat Scotty was 2nd and Carlos Cortes and Bob Orth tied for 3rd. In December, our holiday group of three tables resulted in Bob Orth being 1st, Jean Hunter (sub) 2nd and Thelma Otto 3rd. We started the 2013 year in January with two tables. Bob Orth finished 1st by 20 points and Thelma Otto finished 2nd. Happy New Year to all and keep having fun. -Marti Orth Call for Proposals The Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship The Award The Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship Award at the Riverside campus began in the academic year. This accolade is presented for teaching, research, or public service activities that are in accordance with the intent of the donor. For , the awardee(s) shall be known as the Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professor for the duration of the award and receive up to $6,000, which may be used for salary, travel or research support, subject to all policies and requirements of the University and the Riverside Campus.
