1 Dear 63 Classmates, I like this year s Concordia Homecoming theme: ALL ROWS LEAD HOME. For this Cobber, it s ROW #61, ROW #2, ROW #200, ROW #34, and ROW #10 before I get home to Concordia. I am looking forward to this year s Homecoming Banquet to help celebrate our classmate, Karen Armstrong-Friedrich, on her Alumni Achievement Award. Karan is unable to attend the Banquet due to scheduling conflicts, but we will celebrate her achievements all night long! If you are attending the banquet, request to be seated with members of the Class of 63. The Class of 63 holds one of the top numbers of recipients to receive the prestigious Alumni Achievement Award: Lowell Almen 1982 Joyce Monson-Tsongas 1995 David Olson 1998 James Westgard 2011 John Ahlquist Karen Armstrong-Friedrich 2017 I am also looking forward to touring the newly remodeled science building. I hope to see many of you at the banquet, parade, football game, concert, or worship service. Music CAMPUS UPDATES The premiere of Dr. René Clausen's "The Passion of Jesus Christ," - a new, oratorio-length composition written by Dr. René Clausen and commissioned to observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, took place on April 8 in Minneapolis at Orchestra Hall and April 9 on campus in Memorial Auditorium. The hour-long composition, performed by the 400 musicians of the Concordia voice faculty, choirs and orchestra, brought audience members closer to powerful scenes from Christ s procession into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the trial before Pilate, and the crucifixion. In addition to telling the story of the Passion, music and text reveal moments when major figures struggle with the motivation and implication of their actions. The Concordia Choir toured Germany and Austria in May 2017 to observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and celebrate the 125th anniversary of Concordia College. The Concordia Orchestra will be performing a musical score to the original 1931 Black & White movie Frankenstein at the Fargo Theater on October 17.
2 In May 2018, the Orchestra is planning a cultural and performance tour to Greece. The Concordia Orchestra is planning a tour in late October/early November 2017 to Minnesota and Iowa. Watch for details at Cord.edu/orchestratour. The Concordia Band is planning a tour in February 2018 to North Dakota and Montana. Watch for details at Cord.edu/bandtour. Our class had 34.69% donate this past year to Concordia; we gave a total of $98, Since graduation our class has given $7,247, We ranked third in the percentage of participation for the decade and sixth in total contributions for the decade. 3 Concordia College thanks you for your gifts last year. Approximately 100 of our class members give every year. Another 50 or so donate occasionally; about 240 did not donate this past year. I ll list the donors for 2017 in the next newsletter. To all of those who have not donated to Concordia College for the past three years, I will match up to $20,000 of your gifts to Concordia. OR I will give $20,000 if class participation hits 50%. CAMPUS UPDATES Cobber Athletics The Cobber football team finished in the Top 10 in attendance in Division III for the 10th straight year. Concordia averaged 4,951 fans for their five home games in 2016 (the second most in program history) and finished sixth in the nation in attendance per game for the second straight year. Concordia junior wrestler Adam Presler (Sioux Falls, SD) became the first student-athlete in the history of all Concordia athletics to win the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 Award as the athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships. Presler is a Mathematics Education major at Concordia and has a perfect 4.00 grade point average. Presler won 26 matches this past year and qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet. Senior women s track and field athlete Emma Peterson (Benson, MN) became the first Cobber to win the same two events at the MIAC Indoor and Outdoor Championship Meets. Peterson broke the conference record in both the high jump and triple jump at the conference indoor meet and then won the same two events at the outdoor meet and broke the league mark in the outdoor triple jump as well. Peterson went on to earn All-American honors at the NCAA National Indoor Meet. Concordia men s basketball coach Rich Glas retired after 37 years as a college head coach. In 2017, Glas, who coached the Cobbers for nine years, became a member of the elite group of coaches who have won 600 games in a career. Glas also coached in over 1,000 games during his career. Grant Hemmingsen was named to succeed Glas as head coach of the Cobbers. Hemmingsen has been the team s full-time assistant coach for four years. He came to Concordia after being an assistant at Kentucky Wesleyan, a NCAA Division II school. Hemmingsen played his college basketball at Augsburg College. The Cobber women s track and field team finished third at the MIAC Outdoor Meet. It was the sixth straight season that Concordia has been in the Top 3 at the conference outdoor meet and the 28th consecutive year they have placed in the Top 5. The Cobbers won five of the eight field events at the 2017 MIAC Outdoor Meet.

I apologize for not making my calls this year for newsletter updates will be my last year working full-time with Thrivent Financial. In addition, my secretary will semi-retire at the end of this year. She has been the one who compiles the newsletter each year. I will need someone next year to assume the role of collating the newsletter. Any volunteers? I am still willing to make calls for updates please call me at or g.zinter@mchsi.com if you are willing to help out.
6 Our 55th Concordia Homecoming is September 27-30, Our 50th anniversary was very successful. For our Sunday brunch at the Fargo Country Club five years ago, there were 85 people in attendance and many more said they wished they had signed up. In addition to the usual class breakfast and the Sunday brunch, I would like to add another activity. Just prior to our 50th anniversary, Constance Hunt sent me a DVD with 50 years of her art and asked if we had a way of sharing this. The DVD arrived too late to make arrangements for sharing. I would like to provide our classmates an opportunity to share information about their work, passions, or experience which could be shared in minutes. I d like to schedule these presentations on Thursday and Friday every 30 minutes. Classmates would receive a schedule in advance so they can choose which sessions they d like to attend. A meeting place would be available for those not attending a session to chat with classmates. In the next twelve months I will be asking: 1. Are you planning to attend homecoming on Sept. 28 Oct. 1, 2018? 2. Are you willing to share your work or passion with your classmates? 3. To a picture and a short bio on what you have been up to these past two years. 4. Send us a recipe that you would use if we were invited over for a meal. 5. Can we count on you making a gift to Concordia this year? I want to make our 55th anniversary homecoming a memorable event and I hope that you plan on coming. A grateful Cobber, Gary Zinter 1963 Class Agent
