Burnett Seminar for Academic Achievement entitled Looking Forward, Living Now: A Self-Determined Approach to Success in High School, College and Beyond for Young Adults with ADHD/LD. Kenan Jr. Professor Emeritus of History Time: Noon Location: The Carolina Club, George Watts Hill Alumni Center Cost: $25; GAA members pay only $15 Weinberg, a German-born American diplomatic and military historian, is an internationally recognized authority on Nazi Germany and the origins and course of World War II. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles on twentieth-century European and world history. Dinner With Faculty Time: All dinners begin at 6:30 p.m. and include three courses plus coffee and tea Location: The Carolina Club, George Watts Hill Alumni Center Cost: $40; GAA members pay only $25; Attend all four dinners for $140; GAA members pay only $80 For more information: alumni.unc.edu/go/dinnerwithfaculty THURSDAY, SEPT. 26 Penny Muse Abernathy, Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics Abernathy, a former executive at The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, specializes in preserving quality journalism by helping the news business succeed economically in the digital media environment. As an executive, Abernathy launched new enterprises and helped increase revenue at some of the nation s most prominent news organizations and publishing companies. Before moving to the business side of the industry, Abernathy served as a newspaper reporter or editor at several daily newspapers, including The Charlotte Observer, The Greensboro News & Record and The Dallas Times-Herald. At UNC, Abernathy focuses her expertise on 21st-century economic models that will improve the ability of journalists to produce news in the public interest and take on the industry s economic challenges. Abernathy was inducted into the N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame in THURSDAY, OCT. 3 Donald J. Raleigh, Jay Richard Judson Distinguished Professor of History Raleigh s research and teaching interests focus on twentieth-century Russian history. As a political and social historian, he wrote extensively on the Russian Revolution, with a particular emphasis on local history. Access to long-sealed Soviet archives shaped his later work on the Russian civil war as did his interest in cultural history. More recently, Professor Raleigh has practiced oral history in the post-wwii period and is currently exploring biography as a historical genre. His most recent book is Soviet Baby Boomers: An Oral History of Russia's Cold War Generation (Oxford University Press, 2011). Raleigh has traveled to Russia 40 times since 1971 and served as the enrichment lecturer on three alumni tours to Russia and Ukraine. THURSDAY, NOV. 14 Bernard L. Herman, George B. Tindall Professor and Chair of American Studies Herman is the author of The Stolen House; Architecture and Rural Life in Central Delaware, ; and Town House: Architecture and Material Life in the Early American City, each awarded the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award as the best book on North American vernacular architecture. He has published essays on quilts, self-taught and outsider arts, foodways, historical archaeology, vernacular photography and theoretical approaches to the study and interpretation of objects. His current research projects include Quilt Spaces, an oral history of quilts and quilt makers, a history of first-period ( ) Delaware Valley houses and a collection of essays, Troublesome Things, exploring themes in outsider arts and craft. THURSDAY, DEC. 12 David Schanzer, Adjunct professor of public policy and director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security Schanzer teaches courses and conducts research on counter-terrorism strategy, counterterrorism law and homeland security both at UNC and the Duke Sanford School of Public Policy. He also serves as the director for strategy and outreach for the Institute of Homeland Security Solutions, a research consortium between Duke, UNC and RTI International focusing on applied social science research to advance the national homeland security mission. Schanzer is the lead author of Anti-Terror Lessons of Muslim Americans, a landmark study on how Muslim Americans address the threat of radicalization in their communities. Schanzer has appeared on international, national and local media analyzing counterterrorism and homeland security issues.

5 American Civil War Series The GAA s popular American Civil War Series presents a variety of Civil War classes. You may choose however many classes you d like to attend. Kiger 74 ( 77 MAT) leads our Civil War battlefield study programs, teaches several GAA courses each semester and served as co-lecturer with the late Shelby Foote 39 on the GAA s Cruising the Mighty Mississippi Tar Heel Travel program. Kiger is the creator of the field guide The Civil War: A History of the War Between the States (Workman) and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor s in history and a master s in education with an emphasis in history. Walk the battlefield that brought over 100,000 men together where they vied for control of northwestern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee. As an added bonus, visit the battlefield at Chattanooga, Tenn., which will be celebrating its sesquicentennial in November of 2013.
