CONSERVATION CLUB February 2018 February 2017 REMINDER BOOK FEES If you have not paid your book fees, please do so as soon as possible. The Conservation Club would like to thank the community for their generosity in supporting the winter clothing drive. We were able to donate more than a carload of winter clothing and outerwear to the Clothing Closet at Northview Church. DANVILLE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CLUB Students who are interested in learning about other cultures, exchanging ideas, making friends from around the world, and teaching/mentoring visiting students to help enrich their experience while here can join the newly-formed Danville International Students Club, a Danville Public Library funded program that is hosted in the high school library once a month on Wednesdays during TSS. All students are welcome and should stop by the guidance office to pick up a TSS pass. The second meeting is Wednesday, February 14th. If you have questions, please contact Tara Bunch at the Danville Public Library. One kid, one can. EONOMICS CLASS Mr. Neilsons 6th period economics class is collecting food products and donations for Shared Blessings food pantry on February 12th and 13th. There will be a "drop box" in every first period classroom and in the front office. This food drive is to help our community and to help those who need it. 2 IMPORTANT DATES AND GRADUATION INFORMATION Graduation will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the main gym at DCHS. Graduates participating in graduation are required to dress up for this dignified occasion. If your student has not yet ordered their cap & gown, please contact Herff Jones at ASAP to order graduation supplies. March 21 - Senior Meeting during 1st Block of TSS April 25 Cap and Gown delivery. If you haven t ordered yet, contact T.J. Perry from Herff Jones at or go to their office located at 3917 Clarks Creek Road, Suite 101 in Plainfield. May 14 Scholarships (for Senior Awards Night recognition) need to be turned in, with proof, to Mrs. Miles in guidance. May 16 Senior Walk during TSS May 16 Senior Awards Night 7:00. Plan to be there if at all possible, especially if you receive a letter stating that you will be recognized. May 23 Graduation Rehearsal during TSS (Meet in Main Gym, find your name on the chairs (they will be alphabetical) and have a seat) June 1 Baccalaureate 6:00-6:30 p.m. at DCHS Auditorium, enter through door 1. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. June 1 Graduation: Seniors need to be in the auxiliary gym by 6:45 at the latest. Main gym doors open at 6:00. See Mrs. Siller or Mrs. Collier if you have any questions.

3 ART DEPARTMENT Ms Strunk wanted to share some exciting stuff happening in the DCHS Art Department! 3 students (Mallory Delamarter, Syerra Rusher, and Hallie Taylor) recently entered the Scholastic Arts & Writing Contest, a middle & high school competition which spans across the nation. It is highly competitive and a great way for students to get their names out there in the "art world." DCHS competes in the Central/Southern Indiana region and these girls were up against LOTS of other entries. (Last year there were over 3,000 entries in our region alone!) And this year... THEY ALL RECEIVED AN AWARD! Hallie received "Honorable Mention" for two of her paintings she entered for the contest, and Mallory & Syerra both received "Gold Keys" for their photos they submitted! The Gold Key (first place) award means they are the best of the best in this region, and now their photos are being judged by a panel in the National Competition! Their work will be on display at Clowes Memorial Hall January 31st - March 18th, and they will be honored at a ceremony on March 18th.

5 STUDENT OF THE MONTH December 2017 Jacob Yarnell has been named December s Student of the Month by the PE/Health Department. For the second month in a row, our student of the month loves math. Jacob Yarnell has pushed himself to take as much math as possible. As a junior, Jacob will complete AP Calculus and move on to AP Statistics for his senior year. When he graduates, he will have taken every advanced math class we can offer, which is a significant accomplishment. In the future, Jacob hopes to become a Mechanical Engineer. His second favorite class is Introduction to Engineering, which is not surprising given the heavy emphasis of math in this class. Jacob plans on attending IUPUI in the fall of 2019 where he can begin his quest for his mechanical engineering degree. JACOB YARNELL Student of the Month is an award based on a person s good citizenship, character, service, honesty, and all around good behavior. There is no academic or athletic excellence required to be nominated for this award. Jacob really enjoys being on the track team. He shares that he loves everything about throwing the shot put and discus. He indicated that he enjoys lifting in order to prepare for his sport. His advanced physical education teacher had the following to say, Jacob has exemplified a consistent, hard, work ethic throughout the semester in our weights class. I cannot remember one day in which Jacob drifted through class just to get by. He comes in the weight room each day with an energy about him that s contagious to his classmates. Jacob has led other classmates to a better experience within our weights class. He takes the time to teach and demonstrate proper lifting technique to other students within our weights class. He puts himself by these kids on a daily basis, and leads them to a better overall lifting experience. Jacob models some of his behavior based on what he sees from his track coach, Mr. Wise. Jacob indicated that Mr. Wise is an impressive person for the amount of work he does for the athletes, and his ability to deliver criticism nicely. One of the key elements of engineering any project is to have a solid foundation, the same with throwing the shot put and discus. When you look down at your feet this spring, remember this thought from Leonardo da Vinci, the human foot is a master piece of engineering and a work of art. Congratulations Jacob on being our student of the month.
