Jason Butts Ohio State THE MEET The University of Pittsburgh women s gymnastics team will return to Fitzgerald Field House Friday evening, hosting its first Backyard Brawl of the season, as rival No. 21 West Virginia makes the trek north. The meeting is the first of three battles between the two squads, as each program will host a dual meet, in addition to both teams competing in the Panthers quad-meet on March 3. Pitt is coming off of a loss at the hands of Ohio State Saturday evening. In that outing, Taylor Laymon won Pitt s only individual title, taking the top spot on uneven bars (9.850). Freshman Alecia Petrikis made her collegiate debut, taking second on floor exercise (9.825), tying with Pitt s all-arounder Tracey Pearson. PETRIKIS EARNS EAGL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK NOD Just a few days after competing in her first collegiate meet, Alecia Petrikis was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week Tuesday evening. Petrikis took second on floor against regional powerhouse Ohio State, scoring an to tie with teammate Tracey Pearson. Petrikis was one of just three Panthers to post a score of or higher and was one of four freshmen who contributed for the squad in its season debut against the Buckeyes. In addition, Petrikis was also named the First National Bank Pitt Athlete of the Week for her performance. SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA The Mountaineers are fresh off of a victory over Maryland in their season opener Sunday afternoon n College Park, Md. Trailing heading into the fourth rotation, West Virginia came away with a victory. The Mountaineers rank 21st in the nation with a team average of NEWS & NOTES West Virginia gymnasts earned three individual titles against the Terrapins, as Kirah Koshinski (9.925) earned the title on vault, Jordan Gillette (9.900) claimed the victory on beam and Koshinski picked up her second individual title of the afternoon with a on floor. Koshinski is the lone gymnasts to earn All-Big 12 honors for the Mountaineers last season, and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year following the Mountaineers third-place showing at the conference meet. SERIES WITH WEST VIRGINIA This will be the 70th all-time meeting between the Panthers and Mountaineers in a series dating back to the 1975 season. The Mountaineers have dominated the series as they own a advantage. Pitt s last win over its rival came in the 1991 season as the earned a victory at home. MEET YOUR CAPTAINS Pitt will be led by a trio of talent as Tracey Pearson, Kelly Burak and Dani Hall will share captain duties. Pearson returns as the Panthers top all-arounder, taking 14th at the regional meet in the all-around with a score of A beam specialist, Burak was an alternate at the regional meet, earning EAGL All-Tournament first team recognition after a sixth-place finish at the conference meet. As a junior, Hall contributes on floor, beam and bars for the Panthers, garnering EAGL All-Tournament second-team on floor last season. 2 2 fourth in the conference, receiving 19 votes in the league s preseason poll. NC State led the way, receiving 31 votes, followed by George Washington (29) and New Hampshire (24). Trailing Pitt, UNC received 15 votes to land in fifth, with Towson rounding out the group with eight votes. THE SCHEDULE The Panthers 2017 schedule features four home meets, in addition to the annual Blue vs. Gold scrimmage, with Pitt playing host to three meets in January. The regular season gets underway on Jan. 7, as Big 10 powerhouse Ohio State visits Fitzgerald Field House. A dual with West Virginia follows on Jan. 13 before Pitt heads to New Hampshire for a tri-meet with the Wildcats and Southern Connecticut. Pitt will close out the month of January at home in a dual with EAGL rival UNC, before taking to the road for four consecutive meets. Temple will host a quad with West Chester and Ursinus on Feb. 4, followed by a quad with NC State, William & Mary and UNC on Feb. 10. Pitt heads to the nation s capital on Feb. 17 for a five-team meet with George Washington, Iowa, William & Mary and Maryland before traveling to Penn State on Feb. 25. The Panthers return home on March 3 for the final meet of the season at Fitzgerald Field House, hosting West Virginia, Michigan State and Towson. The final two regular season meets of the year will take place on the road as Pitt travels to West Virginia (March 5) and Auburn (March 10). Post-season action gets underway on March 18 with EAGL Championships set for Cary, N.C. NCAA Regionals will follow on April 1 with NCAA Nationals for April in St. Louis. UP NEXT Pitt will take to the road for the first time, traveling to Durham, NH for a tri-meet with EAGL rival New Hampshire and Southern Connecticut.
