14 O k l a h o m a Wo m e n s G y m n a s t i c s N o t e s 1 4 A University of Oklahoma gymnast s rise from a broken body to an unbreakable spirit By Jenni Carlson The Oklahoman Published: April 3, 2013 Kayla Nowak did the move on the uneven bars almost every day since eighth grade. The Oklahoma gymnast would release from the higher of the two bars, her legs in a straddle position, catch the bar on the other side and continue swinging. But one day in December, she released too soon. she couldn t remove it even to shower. She went from an All-American preparing for a great senior season to someone who couldn t do a cartwheel. But even in the earliest days after her injury, she wasn t angry. Not at her plight. Not at her sport. Her heels caught the bar and sent her flying. She landed on the upper part of her back, then her momentum carried her legs over her head and bent her awkwardly. Less than a month after her injury, Nowak begged her doctor to clear her to fly with the team to Georgia for the season-opening meet. Not everyone in the practice gym saw the fall, but everyone heard it. Less than four months have passed since one of the best gymnasts on one of the country s best teams lay sprawled on the mat eight feet below the bar. To understand how she went from a broken body teetering on the edge of disaster to becoming the unbreakable spirit of a team that hopes to win a national championship, you need to know what a surgeon found when he cut open Nowak and how it changed her outlook. It s the reason she ll be alongside her Sooner teammates Saturday during the NCAA regional at the Lloyd Noble Center. I got the best of the worst situation, Nowak said. I have to go, she told the doctor. And she was there, just like she s been for every meet this season. Look for the blonde when the Sooners take the floor Saturday night at regionals, and she ll be cheering her teammates or chalking the bars or high-fiving her coaches. We probably don t realize how hard it is for her to watch because she handles it so well, Kindler said. Being around her teammates hasn t always been easy for Nowak. They are doing the things she expected to be doing. That has led to some tears and even a meltdown after the team s first home meet of the season. Hers was an injury so severe that she was in danger of paralysis. The coaches and the team trainer ran to her side as soon as they heard her hit the mat. Nowak struggled to breathe and turned blue. Once she finally caught her breath after about 30 seconds, the trainer started trying to assess what might be wrong. Nowak had pain in her sides and her hips, so everyone thought she might have injured her pelvis or even done something to her ribs. I haven t had an athlete fall and be in that much pain ever, Sooner coach K.J. Kindler said. Because Nowak was able to sit up and move her extremities no one thought there was any danger of neurological damage. X-rays, though, indicated Nowak fractured her T-12 vertebrae and dislocated her T-11 vertebrae in her lower back. That wasn t all. When a surgeon cut open her back a few hours after the accident, he could see part of her spinal cord. The four layers of ligaments that were supposed to be covering it were gone, ripped apart by her fall. He said for every one he sees go my way, he sees 80 go the other way, Nowak said. He put it in perspective. Sitting inside the Sooners practice facility next to the uneven bars where she fell, she paused as tears welled in her eyes. Made me feel really lucky. What the surgeon told her has framed her outlook every day since. She needed a wheelchair or walker to get around. She wore a back brace. For a month Still, Nowak knows that being away from the team and the sport would have been even worse. I knew that I wasn t ready to just leave it, Nowak said. Regardless if I was competing or not, I knew I was still a part of it. What happened last December ended Nowak s career and changed her life, but she refuses to be bitter. She chooses instead to feel lucky and be positive. That horrendous fall from the uneven bars injured her back, but she refused to let it crush her spirit.

15 O k l a h o m a Wo m e n s G y m n a s t i c s N o t e s 1 5 Freshman triumphs after recovering from surgery on arm By Cecily Tawney OU Daily Published: March 26, 2013 Her fingers turned blue as she felt coldness in her hand and a shooting pain from her fingertips through her arm. Maile ana Kanewa immediately knew something was wrong. For the 19-year-old freshman gymnast, the use of her hand was not an option it was a necessity. Whether she was swinging on bars, tumbling on beam and floor, or vaulting, her hand was essential. It was late October, and with the regular season looming in January, Kanewa had no time for a setback she needed to prepare. However, nothing could have prepared her for the news she would receive from her doctor. Kanewa had a blood clot halfway up her arm that needed immediate surgery. She was warned that the surgery might not be successful, leading to the devastating possibility of a gymnastics career cut short. I immediately started crying, Kanewa said. I couldn t stop thinking, Could this be the end of my career? But somewhere I went, Nope. I kind of refused to believe that. Kanewa s career, which began at age 4 in Duluth, Minn., was filled with accomplishments. She was especially talented on vault and floor, which led her to OU to compete at the collegiate level in hopes of a future filled with more accomplishments, despite what any doctor or surgeon would tell her. When something is taken from you, you realize, Oh, I don t really miss it, or Oh, this was taken from me, I want it even more, Kanewa said. And when I couldn t do gymnastics, and it wasn t my choice I was like, This is not okay. I wanted it even more because it was taken from me. With a strong desire to return, Kanewa endured the difficult road to recovery while cheering on her teammates as they won the first seven meets of the season and advanced to a No. 2 ranking in the country just before their dual meet against UCLA in February. I think the hardest part for [Maile ana] was sitting back and watching her teammates succeed and move forward while she had to just sit there on the side watching and only hoping to come back soon, freshman gymnast Haley Scaman said. But Kanewa finally would get her chance to contribute. As the Sooners looked on to their tough meet against then-no. 5 UCLA in late February, she was released. People were preparing me that I might not get released, Kanewa said. But I knew. I just had a feeling they would. With two days to practice, Kanewa was placed in the starting lineup in the meet against UCLA. Thrilled for the opportunity, Kanewa was preparing in every way she could. In addition to practicing in the gym, she was visualizing her vault and practicing saluting in her dorm room the night before. Someone who didn t absolutely love and enjoy doing gymnastics all the time would not do that, coach K.J. Kindler said. I think that just shows that her heart is in it 200 percent. As Kanewa took to the vaulting runway on Feb. 22 against the Bruins, she ran confidently down the runway and hurdled into her debut vault as a Sooner. It would earn her the event title that night and contribute to a huge team victory against UCLA. When I landed that vault, with my whole body I could just feel the excitement, Kanewa said. I did it, and for a while, some people didn t think that I would, but I did. I had tried to think about and dream about what that would feel like, but it was a completely different feeling than I thought. It was everything I had imagined, plus 20 times more. I can t even describe it. To Kanewa, it was a huge achievement. To her teammates, it was inspiring. It was amazing just watching her after being out for so long and only practicing for two days. It was awesome when she landed, Scaman said. The whole team was crying. It was such a great feeling and just inspirational. Yet, Kanewa wasn t done. She went on to win vault for the second time in just three meets after her injury against then-no. 16 Arizona on March 8, receiving a perfect-10 score from one of two judges, equaling an average score of a 9.95 and a career high for the freshman. She works extremely hard and believes in herself, Kindler said. You can never underestimate her.
