1 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL APRIL 2018 Message from Mr. Mork We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year. With the end of the school year just around the corner, it is very important to remember that just because the calendar indicates April, it doesn t mean our work here is complete. Students are being challenged to keep up with their academic work and fulfill their obligations of activities and end of the year functions. In today s highly-competitive workplace, it s not enough for your teen to simply possess the specific skills a job requires. They also need to possess a strong work ethic. Research shows that 85% of people who lose their jobs do so because they lack good work habits. The three top reasons employers are forced to let people go are: Tardiness and absenteeism Failure to follow instructions Inability to get along with co-workers A good work ethic consists of: dependability, promptness, initiative, and self motivation to complete school work without being nagged by the teacher or parent. Other important traits include interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work as a team. We all need to do our part to help our students develop a strong work ethic and keep them on target with their academic goals in order to complete the school year successfully. 2 Page 2 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Director s The Spring Sports season is in full swing and already causing scheduling issues. When the weather causes a field to be unplayable the first step is to check if the opponent's field is playable. If a location change is made, the first place to check is r-school. A decision is usually made by 1 p.m. In baseball/softball, one solution is to move the game to the opposite location or turn the game into a Double Header the next time we play them. For soccer, both schools have to find an open date that will work, but the location will normally remain the same. Track is more difficult as the conference quads may not be rescheduled and finding a date for 8 plus schools for an invite to be made up is nearly impossible. Golf is very similar to track in the fact that rescheduling an invite is next to impossible. Conference golf matches have a higher priority and are more likely to be rescheduled. The best solution for the Spring schedule is to have nice weather. Berlin High School is committed to focusing on high expectations and, in partnership with the community, prepares all students to be college and career ready as well as lifelong learners, who are productive, empathetic members of society. 3 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 3 Prom 2018 Starry Night April 21 st Grand March 8pm Spectator Tickets: $2 at the door Dance Tickets: $10 in advance, $15 at the door Prom The junior class will be hosting their prom Starry Night on April 21 st at 8 p.m. in the High School commons. The Grand March is open to the public at a cost of $2 in the auditorium at 8 p.m. The dance is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Post prom will be at the Boys and Girls Club from 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. following the formal dance. Doors lock at 12:00 a.m., so students need to be there by then. Once in, students are not allowed to leave and reenter. The event theme is "Let s get social" a post prom event. It includes food, music, games, photo booth, prizes, and loads of fun. This event is offered to halt some reckless behaviors that too often are associated with prom. Heaven s Touch will be pre-selling pictures that evening and will offer parents a chance to pre-purchase at the link below through April 21 st. Heaven s Touch picture pre-sales: Science Department Berlin Educator Selected for Energy Educator of the Year Award Patrick Arndt, Environmental Science teacher for Berlin High School, has been selected by the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP), in partnership with Alliant Energy, to receive the 2018 Energy Educator of the Year award. Nominated by fellow teacher, Joel Johansen, this annual award serves to recognize and reward exemplary educators who have made energy education a priority in their teaching and outreach initiatives. KEEP is proud to highlight the outstanding network of educators across the state of Wisconsin, empowering students, teachers, and community members to make informed energy choices, said Annie Baker, KEEP outreach staff. Energy Educators of the Year make a difference by improving energy literacy in Wisconsin. Arndt was selected because of his long-term dedication to provide quality learning opportunities for students and teachers alike.

5 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 5 District Solo & Ensemble Results Music Department Hundreds of vocal and instrumental musicians performed at the District Solo & Ensemble festival hosted by Winneconne High School on March 10 th. The students came from Berlin, Ripon and Winneconne middle schools and high schools. Berlin High School sent 83 events where performers are rated and critiqued by judges, earning various scores in three different award divisions. Twenty of those entries received the highest rating and will move on to the state level at UW- Oshkosh, on April 28 th. Students are not competing against each other and the events range in size from solos, duets, trios and the like to larger ensembles such as show choirs and jazz ensembles. Congratulations to all our performers!! Choir Concert The Berlin High School Vocal Music Department will present A Choral Potluck on Monday, May 7 th in the high school theatre at 7:00 p.m. The concert will include a wide variety of flavors of music from spicy to savory to sweet, old recipes and new, as well as the potluck atmosphere of fellowship, family, storytelling and just plain fun! Performing groups include the classical a cappella group called Encore! and the two curricular choirs, Mixed and Concert. Making its debut will be our new contemporary a cappella group called AcaVox and they will be joined by some BHS faculty members!! It s sure to be a YUMMY time for all! We hope the concert might whet your appetite, because following the concert the Music Boosters will top off the evening with their annual Sundaes on Mondays fundraiser. 6 Page 6 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Raising the Bar The high school track and field program is requesting your help with purchasing a pole vaulting facility. Currently our program is unable to train, or enter, any athletes in the pole vaulting competitions. As a result our boys and girls teams must begin every away meet behind in points to the teams whose athletes place in the event. Also, with a pole vaulting facility we would be able to host major meets like regionals and sectionals. Finally, there is the potential for one of our athletes to earn a college scholarship should she or he be skilled enough in this event. The recent reconstruction of our track and football field has been a real plus for our athletic program, and the community. We would like to help complete our facility with the addition of a pole vaulting area. To help we are hoping you will consider contributing to this effort with a monetary donation. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in order to construct a runway, as well as buy a landing pit, standards, poles and crossbars. 7 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 7 Golden Bat Club Thank you to County Materials Corporation for the donation of materials for the construction of bathrooms at the High School Baseball field, located off Center Street. The overall goal of the Golden Bat Club is to raise funds to renovate the park in numerous ways. We would like to open up the dugouts directly onto the field, pour concrete behind the backstop to put our bleachers on, and redo our bullpens. If you would like more information on supporting Berlin High School Baseball and the Golden Bat Club, please contact Coach Cole Boge, cboge@berlin.k12.wi.us. A plaque displaying the bronze, silver, and gold donors will be placed on sight. Contributors $100 and over will be recognized on this plaque. This project will benefit baseball long into the future.
