3 John Muir Magnet School Solstice Celebration Friday, December 16 th Every year our school community gathers together to celebrate yet another trip around the sun. In celebration of the shortest day of the year and the increasing light, we share our appreciations for one another and our community at this special annual event. At 8:30 a.m., students will walk along the bike path to Havurah Shir Haddash for the celebration, which will begin at 9:15 a.m. 185 N. Mountain Ave. Parents are invited to join us for a celebration of reflection and change. This is a dark ceremony doors will be closed at 9:15.

4 In lieu of Winter Faire, we will be hosting a Holiday Bazaar after the Solstice Spiral walk on December 16, 12:30 until 2:25. Clean up from 2:25-2:50. Students will be returning to school after the Solstice Spiral Walk and you re invited to bring a lunch to share with your child(ren). On December 16, send your child to school with a little cash or a prewritten check to JMS PTC (in an envelope with their name on itsuggested amount is $5 or more) so they can purchase their holiday gifts for family members and friends and also a baked good (if they want). Each child will receive one free ticket and a hot beverage. Tickets will be available for purchase after lunch that day in the office. Class Projects- Our students have worked very hard on their class projects. We would like to sell these throughout the week next week. Please consider supporting your child's efforts by purchasing their project or other class projects. Bake Sale- Bake sale items will be available for $1 each (1 ticket). Those of you who volunteered to bring bake sale items for Winter Faire will be receiving an from us w/ a request to bring Dec. 16 instead.

5 Gift Room- Gifts will be $1 each (1 ticket). If you still have gently used items for the re-gifting room, please continue to bring them to office next week. Holiday Movie and JMS Slideshow- The traditional movie "The Snowman" will be showing in the music room along with the JMS slideshow. Students will rotate between the movie and the gift room. Snowflake project Snowflake making will take place in Marcia's room. While it's not Winter Faire, we think the Holiday Bazaar will still be a special afternoon for the students and of course, parents are all welcome to join in on the holiday fun. Anyone who would like to purchase Louie's gift cards over the winter break can do so by contacting Melissa Malm until the 22nd (text her at: ) or Amy Stewart from the 22nd onward (text: ). Louie's Restaurant is located on the plaza and offers a little something for everyone-- and for every $20 card we sell, JMMS gets $10!

6 Hello Parents, We're participating in Louie's Restaurant's Big Give program. It's a great (and easy) way for us to earn money to fund outdoor education trips, special assemblies, scholarships, and equipment upgrades. Here are the details: Buy a Louie's Restaurant gift card for $20 and Louie's will donate $10 to JMMS! Yes, for every card sold, John Muir School gets $10. The details: --Cards have no expiration, no blackout dates, no restrictions on how many cards you can use during one visit --Cards will be sold by Scrip sellers before and after school as well as at Winter Faire (usual Scrip payment methods apply: cash/check only) --Louie's Restaurant offers a full bar, lunch and dinner options, and creekside dining. They offer organic, vegetarian, and glutenfree meal options. They pride themselves on being a familyfriendly, reasonably priced restaurant on the plaza, so $20 will go far there. They also show soccer games on their big screen TVs for all you JMMS soccer buffs! These gift cards make a great gift for coworkers, caregivers, teachers, local and visiting family members on your list! Folks

7 who don't have kids in JMMS are also free to buy these Louie's cards from us so tell your friends and family. Cut your holiday gift list down in a flash while also giving to our school! ART FOCUS HAS CHANGED ITS LOOK! Dear John Muir families, Winter quarter is bringing an exciting change to our Art Focus program! During fall quarter, the JMMS Art Focus Committee spent many hours reviewing the current Art Focus model and determined that, in its current form, it is no longer sustainable. The Art Focus Committee considered 3 other models in an effort to create a sustainable Art Focus model for JMMS and created the following as a pilot for Winter quarter. The JMMS PTC has hired 3 professional art teachers to teach the 3 upper grades (Nasser s, Jim s and Marcia s) and has hired a movement/dance teacher, funded by a grant from the Ashland Schools Foundation, to teach the younger grades (JoEllen s and Kim s). The art teachers for our upper grades will teach students art history, drawing and painting techniques, mixed media, and much more. Each

8 session will incorporate hands-on projects and learning. The movement/dance teacher for our lower grades will teach students awareness of their bodies and appreciation of music through dance and movement techniques. Each upper grade Art Focus teacher will need 2 parent volunteers (that s 6 volunteers) to assist with projects, and with keeping students focused and on-task. If you would like to commit to being an Art Focus volunteer for Winter quarter (Jan 11 - March 22), from 8:20-9:50, please let us know!
