Box 1489 Tallahassee, FL BONITA SPRINGS CONFERENCE RECAP The Commission held its general meeting on June 28, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Bonita Springs. The Commission s first order of business was to grant initial accreditation to the Miami Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department s Turner Guilford Knight Facility, and the Orange County Corrections Department Pretrial Services Unit. The following facilities received reaccreditation: Orange County Corrections Miami Dade Corrections Pretrial Services Unit Department, Alachua County Pretrial Services, Volusia County Pretrial Services, and the Nassau County Sheriff s Office Detention Bureau. The Commission approved 12 changes to the Corrections standards. The changes are detailed on Change Notice A copy of the change notice is available on the website at The Commission s Awards Luncheon was held immediately following the Commission meeting. Ms. Kim Ketchner of the Highlands County Sheriff s Office received the Accreditation Manager of the Year, Sergeant Darren Bryant of the Orange County Corrections Department received the Assessor of the Year, and Ms. Amanda Tipping of the Charlotte County Sheriff s Office received the Distinguished Service Award. The FCAC thanks the FLA-PAC and its membership for graciously sponsoring this luncheon. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation met in Bonita Springs on June 30, 2011 to review agencies for accredited status and conduct general business. CFA thanks the Florida Police Accreditation Coalition for their dedication and hard work in making this conference a success. We also thank Lee County Pretrial Services, Collier County Sheriff s Office, and Cape Coral Police Department for hosting the conference. This dedicated volunteer force provided any and all assistance needed and contributed greatly to the success of the conference. The main order of business was to acknowledge the professionalism of agencies through granting accreditation. Two agencies were recognized as Excelsior Agencies, a distinction awarded to agencies achieving five successful reaccreditation awards. The St. Johns County Sheriff s Office and the St. Lucie County Sheriff s Office are the most recent agencies to achieve this honor. The Temple Terrace Police Department and the Brooksville Police Department were awarded initial accreditation. The Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Department, Sumter County Sheriff s Office, Winter Haven Police Department, Davie Police Department, Highlands County Sheriff s Office, Escambia County Sheriff s Office, Fernandina Beach Police Department, Panama City Police Department, Gulf Breeze Police Department, Lauderhill Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Police Department were awarded reaccreditation by the Commission. The CFA Standards Review and Interpretations Committee met on June 29, chaired by Commissioner Julie Jones, and made several recommendations for standards modifications to the Commission. 2 Brooksville Police Department CFA recognized the recipients of the Commission s annual awards at a luncheon hosted by the FLA-PAC. The 2010 Accreditation Manager of the Year is Dr. Bruce Clark of the Mount Dora Police Department, the Assessor of the Year is Ms. Ana Guerra of the Key Biscayne Police Department, and the recipient of the Neil J. Perry Service Award is Captain Robert Brongel of the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud. Congratulations to each of these award winners! CFA held a joint Commission meeting with FCAC to discuss the appointment of a new Executive Director. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Jerry Bailey presented FDLE s recommendation, and the Commission unanimously voted to confirm Ms. Lori Mizell as the new leader for CFA. Director Mizell has been a member of FDLE for almost 12 years and most recently served as the statewide coordinator of FDLE s Analyst Training Program. Many agencies are currently using PowerDMS to manage the accreditation process. If your agency has not had the opportunity to begin using PowerStandards, please contact your Program Manager. The next Commission meeting is scheduled for September at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra. We look forward to seeing you there! Lori Mizell was formally confirmed as the new Executive Director of the Commission for Law Enforcement Accreditation on June 30th at the Commission meeting in Bonita Springs. Executive Director Mizell is looking forward to working collaboratively with the Commission and Florida s local law enforcement agencies to ensure the Florida Accreditation Office delivers outstanding customer service and offers timely response to requests for service The office has also recently moved from Orlando to Tallahassee. 3 TM Know Your COMMISSIONERS TM Commissioner Jeffrey Chudnow Oviedo Police Department Chief Jeffrey Chudnow began his law enforcement career with the Madison Police Department (WI) where he worked from 1974 to 1982 before relocating to Florida where he worked for the Coral Springs Police Department for 25 years, retiring as a Deputy Chief. During his tenure with Coral Springs, he had the opportunity to work in or command every function in the agency to include patrol, criminal investigation, communications, human resources, records, school resource officers, budget, and vice and narcotics. In May of 2007, Chief Chudnow was appointed as Chief of Police for the City of Oviedo, Florida. Chief Chudnow holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum s Senior Management Institute for Police, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement s Senior Leadership Program and Chief Executive Seminar. He has been an assessor for the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation and the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation. Chief Chudnow currently serves on the Executive Board of Kids House of Seminole; as a Trustee for Boys Town Central Florida; Krewe of Leaders Board member; and is past President of the Central Florida Criminal Justice Association and a Florida Police Chief s Association District Representative. In addition, he an active member of Oviedo Citizens in Action and the Oviedo Historical Society. Previously, he served as the chair of the Broward County Juvenile Assessment Center Oversight Committee; Chair Broward Institute of Public Safety Joint Advisory Committee; a member of the Region Thirteen Criminal Justice Sheriff Tony G. Cameron Suwannee County Sheriff s Office Tony G. Cameron was born in Valdosta, Georgia on July 9, Education - Public schools, Suwannee County; AA degree, North Florida Junior College; Criminal Justice Standards Training Council, North Florida Junior College; BA degree, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University; Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute, Chief Executive Seminar.
