3 Training Curriculum (Cadet) TRAINING CURRICULUM FOR RED CROSS YOUTH CADET UNITS This document serves as a guide to Heads of Department (PE / CCA) and Youth Officers / Teachers-in-charge on the planning and conduct of training programmes for Red Cross Youth Cadet Units (Secondary Schools). The subject matters identified by the Singapore Division shall be the minimum to be covered. Other activities may be conducted above and beyond these subjects. The following reference presents by the subjects, tasks and types of badges that may be awarded. 5 Cadet Incentive Badge Scheme WEARING OF INCENTIVE BADGES A. All Red Cross cadets are to display all their hard-earned incentive badges on the Red Cross Uniform whenever it is worn, especially on parades and special ceremonies. However, cadets involved in some first aid duty assignments may be requested by the Officers-in-charge not to wear the incentive badges. B. All Proficiency and Enrichment Badges issued by the will be worn above the left pocket of the Red Cross uniform (for the boys) and on the left side of the uniform with the first row of badges in line with the name tag (for the girls). C. (1) The badges will be arranged in rows of four. (2) A row of 4 badges can be mounted on a long rectangular white tag for ease of pinning on uniform. (3) Badges placed horizontally on the same row will be arranged in a chronological order with a substitution allowance e.g. Cadets could replace their Bronze with Silver badges or Silver with Gold badges for the same type of badge. This would start from the centre of the uniform to the left side. (4) The badges should not be overlapping each other. They will be placed side by side, almost touching each other. D. Only the higher level of a particular badge should be worn. No two different levels of the same type of badge should be worn on the same uniform. E.g. A cadet, who has already attained a Red Cross Knowledge (Bronze) badge and was awarded the Red Cross Knowledge (Silver) badge, would only have to wear the Silver badge on his / her uniform. *Badge designs are subjected to changes. 15 Cadet Incentive Badge Scheme Proficiency Assessment Guideline Standard First Aid (24 hours) 1. Theory test - 30 MCQs 30 minutes 2. Practical test - Two scenario - 10 min each Unconscious casualty required to do a casualty survey and give appropriate emergency first aid - recovery position, Heimlich manoeuvre or CPR Conscious casualty required to treat a bleeding wound and immobilise 1 fracture. Bleeding wound - direct and indirect bleeding control, pressure points to choose from: 1. subclavian 2. brachial, 3. femoral Dressing the wound: 1. primary dressing 2. bandaging 3. support Fracture or dislocation - possibilities to choose from: 1. shoulder dislocation 2. ankle sprain 3. upper limb or collar bone fracture 4. pelvis or lower limb fracture 5. suspected neck or spine fracture EXAMINATION CRITERIA 100% ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY to sit for the examination. Participants, who failed the theory exam at their first attempt, are allowed a second attempt on the same day. If they fail the 2nd attempt theory exam, they would need to re-take the exam (Theory & Practical) on another day. The re-exam fee is $20. Participants, who failed the exam on the 3rd attempt, will have to re-take the entire course. Theory / Practical Test (3 hours) Assessment conducted by the Singapore Red Cross Academy Standard First Aid Examiners or any recognised Training Centres as approved by the National First Aid Council. Cadets will have to present their Standard First Aid Certification Card to their School Unit for badge requisition and the badge will be presented to them by a RCY VI / VAL / YO / TIC. Reflect on and respond to community, national and global issues, as an informed and responsible citizen. 3.1 Discussion: Lesson 1 First Aid Duty Planning (1 hour 30 mins) 3.2 Discussion: Lesson 2 Team Leading & Management (2- / 3- / 4-men Team) (1 hour 30 mins) Activities and Recommended Time 3.3 Activity: Revision First aid for wounds and bleeding, sprains, dislocations and fractures (immobilise) with evacuation (1 hour) 3.4 Activity: Practical Case Studies (2 hours) 3.5 Discussion: Teaching First Aid and Accreditation (1 hour) Assessment Type 1. Complete Modules and Assessment-based 2. Theory / Practical Test (1 hour) Conducted at Headquarters Level by a Qualified RCY VI / VAL / YO / TIC / VO and Validated by a Subject Matter Expert. Cadets have to complete any one of the following 3 projects specified by the National Heritage Board. Projects: 1. Designing a Heritage Trail OR 2. Executing a Heritage Trail OR 3. Designing an Information Booklet on Singapore s Monuments This can be in the form of a scrapbook with information on the monuments. This scrap book can be produced in any one of the following categories: (a) Religious Buildings (b) Civic Institutions (c) Educational Institutions 1. Complete any of 1 of the above 3 options and submit to a RCY VI / VAL / YO / TIC / VO for verification and endorsement. 2. In addition, the Cadet has to complete any one of the current required criteria and sustained the following qualities during the entire process of the project undertaken. 43 Cadet Incentive Badge Scheme National Education Guidelines on Designing a Heritage Trail Part I: What is a Heritage Trail? A Heritage Trail is a designated journey that brings the trail explorer to learn more about a country s history, culture, architecture, flora and fauna through visiting historical sites and buildings. The journey can be covered by walking, cycling, bus rides, taking MRT rides or even a combination of any modes of transportation. Part II: What are the benefits of a Heritage Trail? A heritage trail: Brings history alive Provides information on a country in an informal and fun way Allows recreational activities for the individual and family Allows one to appreciate the natural surroundings and architecture and culture of a country Promotes and encourages skills such as: - Observation and recording - Comparison and deduction - Reading, writing and comprehension - Measuring and estimating - Map and plan reading - Number and scientific skills - Social skills, sharing and communicating Decide on the Duration of the Trail: How long do you want the trail to take? A good time frame will be between 3 to 3.5 hours (for half a day trail) and about 5 hours for a full day trail. Consider the temperature and humidity in Singapore when you make your decision. What is the Mode of Transportation? Is it going to be a wholly walking trail? Or is it going to be a combination, say of public transport and walking? If it is a combination, you need to check on bus schedules, MRT stops and routes. Not forgetting their EZ-LINK card with sufficient amount of money. This information has to be included in the route map. Plan a tentative route for the trail Put together the route using street maps first so that you have an idea if the route you are going to take. Try to note where traffic points are located or MRT stations can be found. This will help you when you go on your recce. Is the trail going to be guided? If so, you need to look for an appropriate place for the guide to stop and explain. This early preparation will help you identify that space when you go on your recce. 44 Cadet Incentive Badge Scheme National Education Part III: Preparation for Second Recce Now that you have done your first recce, it is time for arrange your thoughts and draw a tentative route map. You will have to revise your initial map and re-route it based on your first recce. Remember to include traffic points, bus stops, MRT stations, food and beverage outlets etc. Remember that the trail walker will need all these details especially if the area is new to him or her. Once you are comfortable with your second map, you are now ready to do your second recce. Bring along the revised map with you. Part IV: Your Second Recce Follow the same procedures as Recce One. This time round use your revised map and fine-tune it so that a person walking will be able to understand the map and follow it. Double-check on historical or factual accuracy, the positions of traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, bus stops, MRT stations etc. Once again, time your walking distance. How do you feel? Is it too long? Too tiring? No covered walkway? Are the bus schedules too infrequent? Do you have to travel or walk long distances just to see something which may not be that exciting? If so, dispense with it or re-route the trail. Once you are happy with these changes, revise the map, information brochure accordingly. Participated as a Singapore Red Cross Representative in an overseas exchange, training or humanitarian programme. 2. Participated as a local representative in a Red Cross exchange or training programme for at least 2 days, with foreign delegates invited, held in Singapore. 3. Assisted in the organisation of a Red Cross exchange or training programme for at least 2 days, with foreign delegates invited, held in Singapore. 4. Hosted a foreign Red Cross / Red Crescent delegate for at least one night in a Homestay programme. 5. Emerged as a winner in any contest (e.g. essay, art, handicraft, photography, logo design, etc.) organised by an overseas Red Cross / Red Crescent Society or a local Red Cross contest of international nature. 6. Participated in a pen-pal exchange of correspondence with overseas Red Cross / Red Crescent members. Correspondence can be in the form of letters, post-cards or messages. To qualify under this condition, the following requirements must be satisfied : (a) At least 5 correspondences with one particular pen-pal OR at least 10 correspondences with two or more pen-pals, both to be spread out within ONE YEAR.
