1 ARMY PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE FOUR STAR SYLLABUS Subject: Map and Compass Aim: To introduce the cadet to the map and compass and to train him how to use them Testing:/Assessment: One question covering each of the topics in the syllabus Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Army Chap 6 Sections 1-7) 1982 UM&C - STAR 1 Care of maps, Reliability and Marginal information 02 The Grid system 03 Conventional signs 04 Map Scales 05 Introduction to the lightweight compass 06 North point and bearings 07 Setting a Map by landmarks and compass 08 Measuring distance on the map Subject: Drill, Turnout and Military Knowledge Aim: To train the cadet to take his place in the squad, handle his rifle at the halt and on the move with particular reference to safety. Testing:/Assessment: The drill test is a test of an individual cadet within a squad of not less than nine which must be drilled by a competent adult in the movements of the syllabus. 2 Subject: Skill at Arms Aim: To introduce the cadet to the.303 rifle and train him up to the standard when he can fire the.303 rifle correctly and safely Testing/Assessment: The aim is to test the cadet s ability to handle the.303 rifle with safety. Four practical problems are to be set covering: safety precautions, care and cleaning, filling chargers, loading, unloading and making safe, sight setting and aiming. Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Chap 5 Sections3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10) 1982 SAA - STAR 1 01 Safety, Stripping, Cleaning, Assembling the.303 rifle and filling chargers 02 Loading, unloading and making safe 03 Sight setting, aiming, and holding 04 Firing in the lying position 05 Parts of the rifle Subject: Field Craft Aim: To train the cadet in the skills of moving as an individual in the field and to act as a sentry Testing/Assessment: The test is designed to assess the cadet s skill as an individual rifleman and must be done out of doors. The cadet must complete a course of incidents to test his use of ground and cover, powers of observation, knowledge of camouflage and obstacle crossing ability. Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Chap 7 Sect 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8. 9). FC-STAR 1 01 Personal Camouflage and concealment 02 Movement with and without rifles 03 Movement and observation-practice 04 Elementary obstacle crossing 05 Introduction to Night work 06 Elementary Night Movement 07 Sentries Aim: To train the cadet in campcraft and movement across country with a load
3 Testing:/Assessment: Assessment will be by observing individual performance during an exercise across country of not less than 4 miles. Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Army Chap 8 Sections 3, 4) 1982 Adv Trg - STAR 1 01 Campcraft (including improvised shelters) 02 Training and preparation for an exercise involving pitching and striking tents, cooking and movement across country for at least four (4) miles 03 Action in an emergency 04 Types of emergency and emergency resuscitation 05 How to stop bleeding and apply a simple dressing 06 Knowledge of Knots and Lashes Subject: Drill, Turnout and Military Knowledge Aim: To master foot drill, achieve a high standard of turnout and bearing, familiarize the cadet with the role of the Defence Force and Protective Services in relation to the Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Force. Testing:/Assessment: The drill test is a test of an individual cadet within a squad of not less than nine which must be drilled by a competent adult. The test may include drill movements of the recruit and Star 1 syllabi. Ref: Drill All Arms (para , , 80-81, 86 89, ) 1965 DRILL - STAR 2 01 Forming squad at the halt 02 Forming squad on the march 03 Changing direction at the halt 04 Changing direction on the march 05 Marching and halting in Slow time 06 Turning in Slow time on the march 07 Forming 2 ranks from 3 and 3 ranks from 2 08 Lecture: Role of the DF and Protective Services in relation to the TTCF Subject: Map and Compass Aim: To train the cadet to relate the map to the ground. Testing:/Assessment: The test must take place outside over a pre selected route. The cadet is to be shown a route marked on a amp not less than one (1) mile and including two (2) changes in direction. He is to complete a route card. After his route card has been checked and corrected where necessary the cadet is to be tested in his practical use of the map and compass by following the route. There will be one question each on Section Organization and Section Formation. The cadet will be observed when in a section commanded by an adult carrying out section battle drill exercises in which at least 2 of the drills are done. Two practical problems will also be set on Night Movement and Identification of sounds at night respectively.

Testing:/Assessment: The assessment will conform to the rules for President s Award (Bronze). Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Army Chap 8 Sections 5 and 6) 1982 Adv Trg - STAR 2 01 Training and preparation for Star 2 expedition. 02 Action in emergency 03 How to recognize broken arm/leg and immobilize it 04 Treatment of bleeding and wounds 05 Recognise of the onset of exposure and shock and immediate action to be taken Preparation of a Route Card is an essential aspect of this training Cadets will not be tested in this subject until he has done Use of Map and Compass at Star 2 level Subject: Map and Compass Aim: To train the senior cadet in the practical application of more advanced map reading Testing:/Assessment: The testing will take place outside over a pre selected route. The cadet must find his position on the map and check it by resection. The cadet is then shown a route on a map of not less than 1 mile and including 3 changes in direction. On the route there will be testers who will set three practical problems on back bearings, keeping direction at night and relating the map to the ground.

Testing/Assessment: The drill test is a test of an individual cadet within a squad of not less than nine (9) which will be tested at the same time on the following basis: Ref: Drill All Arms (para 80-81, 86 89, 118, 246, , 10-19) 1965 DRILL - STAR 3 01 Marching and halting in slow time 02 Turning on the march in slow time 03 Open and close order on the march in slow time 04 Reverse arms from present 05 Rest on arms Reverse, Present from Rest on Arms Reverse 06 Advance in Review Order 07 Words of Command 08 Handling the drill squad Subject: Fieldcraft Aim: To train the senior cadet to effectively use ground and cover whilst in a section and to effectively mount, carry out and debrief a patrol. Testing/Assessment: The test will take place both indoors and outdoors and cadets will be tested individually as members of a patrol commanded by an adult. Testing:/Assessment: The assessment will conform to the rules for President s Award (Silver). Ref: Cadet Training Manual (ACF Army Chap 8 Sections 7) 1982 Adv Trg - STAR 3 01 Training and preparation for the Star 3 expedition 02 First Aid training to the required standard of St John Ambulance Brigade or the Red Cross Society Aim: To develop the cadet s stamina, discipline, self reliance, confidence and military skills during an expedition of minimum duration of 52 miles on foot and three (3) nights out Testing:/Assessment: The assessment will conform to the rules for President s Award (Gold).
