2 Wing Calendar Date Event Uniform Notes June 9 TRAINEX Concord Squadron Hosting Aerial Photography and Beacon Locating Various NHWG Hqtrs. Sat., June 9 Corporate Learning Course Polo NHWG Hqtrs Cadet Programs CAPE COD TRAINEX by C/1st Lt. Valerie Mitchell This year s Cape Cod outing was a success with a large group of cadets and seniors from both Seacoast and Highlanders squadrons getting together for training and fun times. Maj. Barrington graciously hosted the weekend on his private property on Pochet Island. The participants were ferried over to the island on Friday night and after a good meal and nights rest on the grounds and in the old house were ready for GT training the next day. They engaged in GT training with beacon locating equipment on Saturday morning. The weekend was complete with fun and games, trips to the ocean shore, walks on the island and big hearty meals. Photo by Cadet Abigail DeBow Cadets Using Direction Finding Equipment Aerospace Education The topic for the May aerospace evening was on Cybersecurity and the opportunity to become trained to work in that field in the Air Force. A newly formed 67th Cyberspace Wing at JB San Antonio, Texas is up and running. For those who have participated in the CAP Cyber Patriot competitions this would be right up your alley. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE The Squadron Color Guard along with a number of senior members took part in the Exeter Memorial Day parade

3 which traveled from Swazey Parkway to the center of town. Five seniors accompanied the group of cadets. photo by SM Robinson Seacoast Squadron Color Guard and marchers ready for the parade POWERED ORIENTATION FLIGHTS : Powered O-flights will be scheduled for various dates during the month. Now that the weather seems to have moderated there may be more opportunities for flying once we have an aircraft at Pease again. Cadet Brianna Browning received her first flight in May. Keep your ears tuned and sign up to fly. Glider flights will be available on 1 July so sign up when the event is posted to Eventbrite. The glider flights will be flown out of Brunswick, ME using the winch tow. SQUADRON FUN NIGHT: Both Seacoast and Highlanders had their quarterly fun night at Take Flight Aerial Adventure in Kittery, ME on May 31. Cadets arrived and checked in at After getting properly fitted with equipment they had a safety briefing called Pre-Flight. After everyone understood the rules they headed out to the course and had hours of fun climbing over obstacles and climbing high up in the sky. By C/1st Lt. Valerie Mitchell

7 Thoughts from Chaplain Gary: My wife Iris and I flew, over the past Memorial Day weekend, to Skokie (Chicago) to share in our grandson's graduation from high school. It was wonderful to be with our son and his family. We flew Southwest Airlines... and, as we sat in the Manchester terminal awaiting our flight, in the back of my mind was the horrific accident they had recently had to deal with when a window cracked and a passenger was partly sucked out of the airplane and died. Now we all know that airline flight (at least in the US), is many times safer than automobile driving, but precisely because the exception makes the news in a very public way, it sticks in your mind. I was both surprised and pleased to read an article by the Chairman and CEO of the airline in its inflight magazine. He wrote of his sorrow over the accident, saying it was the first passenger fatality in the airline's 48 years. He then wrote what one might expect any company that had received bad press to say... they were doing everything they could to make sure it didn't happen again (a public relations tactic recently ridiculed in the comic strip Dilbert). But then I then read something that I would not have expected: "At any point if I am not 100% confident that we can safely deliver on our promise to you ( of a safe flight ), I would not hesitate to ground our entire fleet. That would not be a hard decision for me to make -- it would be the only morally acceptable decision for me to make, and I am prepared to make that call at all times. (Emphasis mine) Those words resonated as very special with me; I do not often read of morality in relation to hard business decisions. In my position as a chaplain with the Civil Air Patrol, I teach to to the cadets (and senior members) about the Four Core Values on which C.A.P. is based... Respect, Integrity, Volunteer Service, and Excellence. Except for volunteerism, the chairman's statements reflects these values... and I flew home feeling very safe!
