2 On Dec 1, 2013 FVCS to break the world record for the highest paper airplane flight from a high-altitude balloon launched from Kankakee Airport (3KK), 1520 South State Route 115, Kankakee, IL 60901, at (or just after) 11:00 AM Local Time. A Mission Control was set up at DuPage Airport, 32W581 Tower Road, West Chicago, IL All press personnel, Guests and members from Squadron and Wing witness the launch via Skype at the Wing. The current record, set in 2010 by a team of aerospace enthusiasts in Spain, currently stands at 89,591 feet. But members of Fox Valley Composite Squadron planned of besting that record by greater than 15,000 feet targeting an altitude of 105,000 feet (that s 19½ miles up into the Stratosphere) in what s known as near-space (because it s above 99% of the Earth s atmosphere) -- with their paper aircraft. The squadron designed the project as an extreme Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning experience for their Cadets (youths ages 12-17). The cadets, along with the guidance of the senior officers, designed, assembled, and tested a large paper airplane that will carry a one-pound payload containing two high-definition (HD) video cameras, a GPS tracking system, and a custom-built flight computer. The airplane was attached to a large helium weather balloon and was projected to ascend to an altitude greater than 100,000 feet above Sea Level, where the onboard flight computer will cut-away the paper airplane for its record-breaking flight. The balloon abruptly encountered a violent wind gradient (Jet stream?) at 51,000 feet sending our paperairplane tumbling into the balloon -- a total of 3 strikes in just over 10-seconds -- rupturing the balloon envelope. The team was able to track both the ascent and descent of the paper airplane in real-time using the aircraft s on-board GPS flight tracking system and radio transmitter. This system will also allow the team to recover the aircraft and retrieve the video cameras documenting the entire flight in stunning high definition video which will be shared with all press members in attendance. For more details, photos, and videos about this project and world record attempt are available on the Fox Valley Composite Squadron s Near-Space Balloon Project website at: Here's the link form the different media who covered the event and support our squadron and the Cadet's activities. Daily herald: and The Fox Valley Composite Squadron's attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record on News radio 780 AM WBBM the interview with 1st Lt Gary Brown was aired several times. See the attached photos from those bad moments. From Cadets : Though we fell short I felt like we gave it our all, and that's what matters. Thank you to all the cadets who participated -Cadet Collin Sullivan Cadet recruiting Officer, Cadet Master Sgt. Everyone who was involved in the Near Space Balloon project did an outstanding job both out at the launch and back at mission control. Even though we didn't break a world record, a good time was had by all and the cadets were able to gain some additional knowledge. 13 FROM WING: Emergency Services ES Training Framework for FY 2014 in Place The Illinois Wing has posted the ES training and Operations Plan for FY 2014 into WMIRS. On 24 August the Group Commanders met at Wing HQ and were briefed by a number of Wing Staffers including Operations. We walked out of the meeting with Dates on the calendar for each of the Groups to host a SAREX. We are waiting for Group 3 to confirm their date before we post it. With that, FY 2014 looks to be a busy year. We will have SAREX training opportunities throughout the Wing. If your commanders have not built Emergency Services into the schedule, challenge them on it and get going on building ground teams and air crews in your units FOR PILOTS: Aircraft Issues Pilots are reminded to keep their heels on the floor and watch the break sensitivity to prevent flat spots on the tires. When you are pre-flighting the aircraft, make sure to check the tires for worn spots. This can be done as you pull it out of the hangar and again when you push it back for parking. Please ensure you are checking the hours on the aircraft. Over flying the 100 hour causes numerous headaches and red flags. Let s tighten it up and fly safe FAA Safety Team Safer Skies Through Education: The Physics of Spins" Topic: Why airplanes spin, the phases, forces, recovery, and avoidance of spins. On Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 9:00 AM Location: Wind Sock Center 8411 Pyott Rd. Lake in the Hills IL Wind Sock Center Lake in the Hills, IL Select Number: GL Description:This seminar will examine why airplanes spin, the phases of a spin, the forces acting on the airplane during each phase, the methods of recovery from each phase, and how to avoid spins altogether, with special emphasis on stall-spin accidents. 14 The "Aircrew Professionalism" section is posted on the CAP Pilots web page to include the "Aviators Model Code of Conduct" website along with the actual Aviators Model Code of Conduct (AMCC) document. This information was developed by a team of aviation professionals, drawing upon decades of research and experience, the Code provides expectations and recommends operating practices to enhance the quality and safety of CAP flight operations. Aircrew conduct impacts the entire aviation community, including its safety culture. A code of conduct can help achieve new levels of proficiency. The AMCC is a tool, a set of guidelines which is useful to each CAP aircrew member and the overall flying community. CAP aircrew members are encouraged to use this aircrew professionalism information and to commit to the highest principles of aviation safety and professionalism. DOV Staff / 26 Nov How Much Fuel Do You Have? Notice Number: NOTC5020 Fuel Starvation and Exhaustion are still causal factors in many General Aviation Accidents. Fortunately, a large selection of fuel totalizing and monitoring options are available to help you prevent these very preventable accidents. But, technology only helps when pilots apply it consistently and correctly. Follow these three simple steps to avoid becoming a fuel accident statistic: -Whether you re sticking the tanks or relying on cutting edge fuel management software, know how much fuel you have on board before each takeoff. If you have a fuel management system on-board, make sure you program it with accurate information before Every Flight. -Know how much fuel you plan to burn and how much fuel you re burning. If you don t have on-board equipment to answer this question, calculate your fuel burn before each flight and confirm your calculations each time you refuel. Comparing your actual fuel burn to your calculated fuel burn will give you confidence in your fuel planning and you can often uncover fuel leaks or other small problems before they become big ones. -Finally, make a commitment to join the many pilots that have a personal minimum not to land with less than one hour s fuel in the tanks. This will exceed any regulatory reserve fuel requirements and you ll never be anxious about pushing your fuel.
