These awards are public recognition of their service to the AFA mission and their continued support of our chapter, Wright-Patterson, and the local community. cadets who received AFA scholarships, or some of the thousands of people who were touched by the educational or community outreach programs we helped support. Ask your Ohio Congressional delegation if the AFA influences programs and legislation supporting the Air Force, DENNIS DRAYER W PAFB, and the Miami Valley. Or come out to events we stage to create a bridge of understanding between base leaders and community civic and business leaders. We are making a difference that directly affects our members and potential members. I appreciate their style of leadership, because it is borne through example and a willingness to make a difference. We ve all observed people who are quick to point out shortfalls and what should be improved, but are never quite available to put their minds, backs, and hands to the actual work involved. My perception is that most of these folks never learned that to be a leader, you must first learn to follow. You ve surely heard the phrase too many chiefs and not enough Indians where people want to bask in the glory of success, but roll up their blanket and move on if that means breaking a sweat. In a volunteer organization, everyone on the team needs to be a hands-on leader and that literally means putting your hands on the work, not just talking about it. It is no longer enough for people to join a service organization like the Air Force Association because it s the right thing to do. People need to know that what they do makes a difference and the AFA and Wright Memorial Chapter truly does that! Just ask the kids in 160+ classrooms who participated in the Visions program, or the ROTC or Jr ROTC There are many opportunities in the next few months for you to become involved with the AFA in a handson leadership way. 1. Our annual membership drive will run from now until the Air Force Ball in September. To that end we need unit membership leaders to serve as points of contact in every major organization at Wright- Patterson, and community contacts responsible for business communities across the area. 2 AFA CHALETS AT 2006 DAYTON AIR SHOW Congratulations to the National Award Winners We had a several chapter members selected to receive national awards this year. Please congratulate them for their achievement next time you see them. Presidential Citation Mike Winslow The Dayton Air Show dates for 2006 are July 29 and 30. This year s show will feature the Navy Blue Angels jet team. Through the generosity of our corporate sponsors, the Wright Memorial Chapter will once again have a significant presence at the show. This year we expect to have a total of 4 chalets. AFA members and guests will be able to watch the show and enjoy food and beverages from the air conditioned comfort of the chalets. AFA members may purchase tickets for Saturday or Sunday for $50 each. The ticket entitles you to free parking in the Pavilion (P) Lot, transportation to the chalet, food and beverages at the chalet and access to all air show ground activities. We want to start a program that leverages the leadership skills and insights from both local active and retired senior leaders to help mentor and trainup the next generation of leaders in and around WPAFB. The format will be varied limited formal sessions and informal hangar sessions, occasional large audiences, more often small groups, sometimes one-on-one eyeball-to-eyeball sessions. I need some senior leaders who will roll up their sleeves to share their insights on leadership, management, and what it takes to be a flight lead and wingman. Contact me at dennis.drayer@ncr.com 5. 3 AFROTC ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), Detachment 643, Wright State University, 25th Annual Awards Night, hosted by Cedarville University was held on 13 Apr, 2006 to recognize its most outstanding cadets. Among the awards presented, Cadet Arthur Bull was named the Air Force Association (AFA) Cadet of the Year, detachment level, and Cadets Jennifer Hebert, Michelle Glover, Jeffery Compton, and Wi l l i a m Strycula-McCuddy each received a $1,000 Air Force Association, Wright Memorial Chapter (WMC) scholarships. Mr. Kent Owsley, WMC Vice President, presented the awards. LtoR:Cadets Jennifer Hebert, Michelle Glover, Jeffery Compton and William Strycula-McCuddy with Mr. Kent Osley, WMC Vice President Each year, the Wright Memorial Chapter, AFA has graciously awarded and presented scholarships to Detachment 643 cadets who have exhibited outstanding leadership, officer potential, academic excellence, and rank at the top of their Aerospace Studies class. Colonel Bernie Fullenkamp describes the support from the Wright Memorial Chapter as superb during his four year tenure as Detachment 643 s Commander. The chapter s generosity far exceeds just our annual awards program. A FA s contributions have made it possible for cadets to attend regional and National Arnold Air Society conclaves, as well as offset the costs of using the Air Force Museum during our formal dinning event and other leadership and training opportunities for the cadets of Detachment 643. was recently selected as the Detachment s fall rotation Cadet Wing Commander based on his professional excellence throughout his time spent in AFROTC. Upon graduation and commissioning in May 2007, Cadet Bull will serve the Air Force as a pilot. All four of the Wright Chapter, Air Force Association $1000 scholarship recipients has clearly demonstrated leadership potential, academic excellence, and a strong commitment to the AFROTC program. Our first recipient, Cadet Hebert is a senior at Wright State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a 2002 graduate of Beavercreek High School and is the daughter of Calvin and Bonnie Hebert of Beavercreek, Ohio. Upon graduation and commissioning in November 2006, Cadet Hebert will serve the Air Force as a Nurse. Next, Cadet Glover is a junior at Wright State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cadet Glover came to Wright State after eight years as an Air Force enlisted administrative specialist. Upon graduation and Commissioning in 2007, Cadet Glover will serve the Air Force as a Nurse. Our third recipient, Cadet Compton is a sophomore at the University of Dayton pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Cadet Compton a 2004 graduate of Strongsville High School is the son of Jeffery and Ann Compton of West Chester, Ohio. Upon graduation Cadet Compton hopes to serve within the Air Force Office of Special Investigations upon being commissioned. Finally, Cadet Strycula-McCuddy is a freshman at the University of Dayton pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He is a 2005 graduate of Yellow Springs High School and the son of William and Roseanne Strycula-McCuddy of Cedarville, Ohio. Since day one of joining AFROTC, Cadet Strycula-McCuddy has stood out among his peers as an outstanding performer and contributor to the overall success of Detachment 643. Wright Chapter, Air Force Association Cadet of the Year, Arthur Bull is a senior year at the University of Dayton pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems. 4 VETERANS SUMMER PICNIC On Saturday, 3 June 2006, the Wright Memorial Chapter 212 of the Air Force Association (AFA) and the Kittyhawk Chapter 751 of the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) jointly sponsored a picnic for the veterans at the Dayton VA Medical Center. Systems Go from the Air Force Band of Flight provided entertainment for the veterans during the picnic. The band played old favorites, modern music, and requests from the veterans. Also, several members from the 445th Airlift Wing joined in serving the veterans. Representatives from all of the above organizations served hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato chips, cookies, fruit, and soft drinks to the veterans. The picnic was set up outside of the veterans nursing home and food was delivered to nursing home residents who were not able to attend the picnic. Over 200 veterans and VA staff enjoyed the food and entertainment. The veterans and VA staff expressed their appreciation for the picnic. This picnic was a rewarding experience for all of the AFA, AFSA, and the 445th Airlift Wing members present. 4

6 Aerospace Education Year End Review As the students and teachers would say schools out for the summer. It s now the time for rest and relaxation for the students and their teachers, and a time for the Wright Memorial Chapter to reflect on the accomplishments of the school year and beginning planning for the school year. AFA is known for a program that recognizes teachers through a program titled Teacher of the Year. This program exists on the local, state, and national level. We are honored to have Chantelle Rose as our Wright Memorial Chapter Teacher of the Year. She received this honor at the AFA State Convention in April. At the convention she received an even greater surprise of hearing her name called as the Teacher of the Year for the state of Ohio, and to learn that her package qualified for national consideration. Now we wait to see how she fairs on the national level. A very successful Visions Program was run with USA Today newspapers in the classroom. We had 163 classrooms all across the Miami Valley that benefited from the papers. Our chapter is the second largest in the country for providing USA Today newspapers for classroom use. For thousands of our students this is the only exposure they ever get to a newspaper and their excitement mounts when Tuesday comes and they get the opportunity to learn about predominately science and math though the USA Today newspapers. In October 2005 the Wright Memorial Chapter helped to sponsor WOEA Day, a teacher inservice day for teachers in western counties of Ohio. Twenty-five teachers were registered for the all day inservice on science related topics. We were pleased to have walk-ins that added to the number of pre-registered teachers. This inservice day was co-sponsored by the Education Outreach office from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and National Museum of the United States Air Force. The second semester of the school year, beginning in the mid-january time-frame commenced an exciting new program for our members, along with persons both military and civilian from WPAFB. We started a tutoring program with the Fairborn City Schools. The bulk of our volunteers tutored at Fairborn Intermediate School (4th and 5th graders) while some worked in the 6th grade building, and two tutored kindergarten students in the primary building through an ESL, English as a Second Language program. The program was a huge success throughout the entire district and will continue into the school year. We will be looking for more volunteers, so if you are interested please contact me at swal3754@ameritech.net. Our state convention was held this year at the Hope Hotel and Conference Center on April 29th. We were pleased to have 93 teachers present from all over Ohio. They had the opportunity to take 4 hours of classes related to science and math and received PDU s at no cost. PDU s are required by the state of Ohio to update your certification. For the first year, we were excited to have such a wonderful turnout and we look forward to next year s event. Teacher s had the opportunity to purchase educational materials through several vendors that were arranged for the teachers. One of our vendors, Scholastic Books has a program to donate books based on the amount of your sales. Wright Memorial Chapter was able to donate 25 books to Fairborn Intermediate School for their library. As we concluded the school year, Fairborn Intermediate School contacted us regarding the mailing of packages to troops in Iraq. Through our participation in their school and also having a social worker in their building who is now deployed the students have truly learned first hand the importance of supporting our troops. The students and teachers filled eight boxes with personal care supplies for our troops. To show our thanks for their generosity, the Wright Memorial Chapter picked up the cost of the postage. As you look at this year in review, please share with us any ideas that you may have as to new programs that you might like to see us add to this list of accomplishments. 6

7 Re-energizing Our Membership Programs by Dave Judson Over the past six to nine months our chapter has lost nearly 40 members and we continue to struggle with maintaining our community partners. In March of this year, Dennis Drayer asked me if I would join the team and take on the membership responsibilities. He shared that he intended to put significant focus on our membership activities in 2006 and expected a great deal of support to be generated. That being said, I accepted and decided to get educated on how membership is managed for AFA at the National level. I spent some time with the AFA National team on a recent trip to Washington DC so I could get a better understanding of how our efforts could compliment each other. As it turns out, our National brethren are in the middle of an IT upgrade that will provide a new software capability aimed at better managing our membership activities as well as donor programs. Until that software upgrade is completed, we will have to rely upon membership updates in the same way we have in the past. This is a somewhat manual process that requires local chapters to know which person to contact to get certain tasks completed that we should otherwise be able to accomplish via the web. Knowing what we have to deal with and where we are headed is a valuable education. At the same time, we have the opportunity locally to develop our membership and community partner s process so that can be a model for our National team. Over the coming months, you will begin to see that process take shape. Membership is the foundation of our success. Our ability to do well for our community as a whole is largely dependent upon our membership. In short, do we have enough individual members and community partners to meet the current and future needs of our local chapter? As in any membership based organization, there is always a need for more members. As such we intend to get back to basics and implement the three step cyclical process noted to the right. Doing this will require our local team to take an active role in the process and not expecting the AFA National team to do it all. We intend to monitor and report the following information on a monthly basis to ensure we stay engaged in the status of our membership; total members, total new, total lost and total renewed. Our current membership numbers indicate we have approximately 2300 members, of which 807 are lifetime members. That means nearly 1500 of our members are subject to potentially leaving the organization if they do not feel they are getting value for their membership dues. One of our biggest and most important challenges is ensuring these members do find value in our chapter and want to renew their memberships. Fortunately the information we receive from National indicates when a membership is going to expire. Given that, we can proactively engage those individuals to renew their membership as well as get feedback on what they would like to see from their AFA chapter. In a chapter of our size, this is an extremely important function as noted by the fact that we have 294 memberships expiring over the summer months. I look forward to working with our leadership team and chapter membership to expand an already well oiled membership program to grow our local chapter to new heights.
