It is now time to bore you with a few details of our trip. First, we discovered we are not bus tour people. If we wanted to be regimented, we would join the army. Germany is for the most part a beautiful country. Far more so than we expected. I think that is mainly because there are more forests than we thought there would be. The bus tour covered most of the country and therein lies the problem. We saw many places and things but did not have the time to really see anything. Not the tour company s fault just the nature of a bus tour. One thing we did see in fairly good detail was Miniature World in Hamburg. This was not part of the itinerary but something we went to see with my sister Gail and brother-in-law Dennis while the rest of the group went on a harbour tour. If you have an interest in model railways this is the place to go. What a marvelous display. Even the teeny, tiny street lights changed color and the planes flew in and flew out again. Some of them did touch and goes while some of them went to terminals and let passengers off and still others taxied to hangars for maintenance. After the bus tour we flew to Budapest for 3 days prior to boarding the Viking Idun (cont d page 3) Nanaimo Squadron General Meeting Tuesday November 12, 2013 Nanaimo Yacht Club 1900 Dr John Davis Former Assist. 3 VOLUME 52 ISSUE 3 PAGE 3 for a river cruise. This part of our trip was fabulous, far above our expectations. Gail and I had to be taken off the river boat kicking and screaming that we wanted to stay. Accommodations, meals, STAFF, piloting were a thing of beauty. Yes, without the staff the rest would have been good but not necessarily fabulous. I do not know where they receive their training but they do things right. Okay, enough about the travelogue. From what I saw online the 75 th Flag Relay Celebration went extremely well. A tip of my hat to organizer Darlene and backup crew of Barb and Sheila. A job well done. Being commander is far easier when you know some great people have your back The Boating Essentials course started while I was away. Thanks to Barb for being there to see things went smoothly. We only have 9 students but they seem very enthusiastic. Some of them have already signed up to take the Maritime Radio Course in November. One huge question remains How do we promote our courses to obtain more students? Barb spent 3 days at West Marine and put an ad in the paper to no avail. She said West Marine got involved by asking customers if they were aware courses were being offered and still no takers. On the PCOC for Women by Women front I understand there are 6 students. Again, thanks to Barb and Sheila. I will be attending the second session now that I am back.. As most of you know I will be representing our squadron at the National AGM October What you may not realize is that I will also be representing VIND as a substitute DTO as Nick Fortin cannot go. I will attend as many meetings as possible but have to admit my main interest will be in the training. We have enough commander meetings at district meetings that I can almost predict how those will go. We get a lot of questions about how to get bridge members, students, turn out at squadron meetings and events with no solutions forthcoming. My November report will undoubtedly be about said meetings. I have not received a Notice of Motion at this time. If any are received I will call a bridge meeting to discuss them. As any Notice of Motion is supposed to be published in the Canadian Yachting West magazine this situation should not arise. See you at the November meeting. Alexa Stochmal To so many members of the community who helped make our 75th Anniversary celebration a great success Mayor John Ruttan - for attending and speaking Nanaimo Port Authority Michael Davidson and David Mailloux provided the venue for the event, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Mike Banning, boat and team, for carrying the flag along the channel Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Amphion for providing the Honour Guard Impact Digital Photography Mike Thompson, for photography Nanaimo Daily News/Harbour City Star Andrea Rosato-Taylor provided advertisement, support and information, Tempo Dance Academy provided entertainment, Tourism Nanaimo Chelsea Barr provided advertising, Wave/Wolf Radio Rob Bye for advertising and speaking, Woodgrove Mall Amber Cronk provided a very large tent, Nanaimo Yacht Club presented a plaque and provided a tent, Bob and Dorothy Bollinger lent us a sailboat Quality Foods - provided two amazing cakes, Harbour Living advertisement,

6 VOLUME 52 ISSUE 3 PAGE 6 Executive Officer s Report What wonderful weather we have had for boating this summer!! We were very lucky as the weather held for our Canadian Power and Sail Squadron 75 th Anniversary Flag Celebration at Pioneer Water Front on September 26, Our 75 th Anniversary Flag flew on the Port of Nanaimo flagpole for the week of September 22 28th as the City of Nanaimo declared that week as CPS week. We had an excellent turnout of approximately fifty people. The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue boat and team brought our CPS 75 th Anniversary Flag on their bow down the Nanaimo channel where the Port of Nanaimo patrol boat met and escorted them into Nanaimo Harbour. The Flag was handed over to Past Commander, Barb Hoffstrom with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Amphion Honour Guard. The Flag was dipped in Nanaimo harbour then marched up the staircase with the Honour Guard, RCM Search & Rescue, and Nanaimo Port Patrol Officers in attendance. The Flag was then handed over to Executive Officer, Darlene Moss surrounded by the 20 Past Commanders. Darlene gave a brief talk about the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons history, the Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadron history, what we do, why we teach safe boating, the courses we teach and our philosophy. Short presentations were provided by the invited Dignitaries, and the Tempo Dance presentation, cake cutting and a lot of visiting and sharing of stories. Many thanks to His Worship, John Ruttan, Counsellors Fred Pattje, Dianne Brennan, George Anderson and Chair of Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board Jamie Brennan for taking the time to come celebrate with us. We were very pleased that twenty of our Past Commanders turned out to help us recognize CPSs 75 years. Thank you to the Nanaimo Yacht Club Commodore David Maudie, who presented us with a lovely plaque. Also supporting us were Vancouver Island North District Representative Barry Ensign,, Nanaimo Port Authority Rod Grounds, Wave/Wolf radio Rob Bye (former NPS student) and representatives from the Nanoose squadron Mike Patterson and Gabriola Squadron Ralph Hagen. Thanks to Jennifer Walsh and Genevieve Caron from Tempo Dance Academy who did the choreography for dancers: Haley, Sarah, Delaney and Brianne. They preformed a wonderful Sailor Dance which was enjoyed by all!! We would not have been able to have this event without the dedicated help of the following Nanaimo Bower and Sail Squadron Members: Alexa S., Sheila B., Barb H., Cecil A., Ian W., Bill W., Barry E., Bob M., David M., Darren M., Richard C., Velma T., John S. and Mike B. Also I would like to give our heart felt thanks to the following community groups who donated what we needed to make this event happen: Nanaimo Port Authority Michael Davidson and David Mailloux place for event, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Resue boat and team, Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Amphion Honour Guards, Impact Digital Photography Mike Thompson photography, Nanaimo Daily News/Harbour City Star Andrea Rosato-Taylor advertisement, support and information, Tempo Dance Academy entertainment, Tourism Nanaimo Chelsea Barr advertisement, Wave/Wolf Radio Rob Bye advertisement, Woodgrove Mall Amber Cronk very large tent, Nanaimo Yacht Club tent, Bob and Dorothy Bollinger sailboat, Quality Foods - amazing two cakes, Harbour Living advertisement, and The Bulletin advertisement. We ended the event by officially handing the Flag to the Gabriola Squadron Commander, Ralph Hagen for its ongoing journey!! No Boat? No problem. Why not join us?
