For the past three years, I have served on the Disability Advisory Committee for the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. 2 of those years were as vice-chair, and now I am serving as chair. In that time our committee has developed a web presence for employees to find information related to all types of disabilities, increased membership and been a more active voice for employees with disabilities. I want to further my efforts in advocating not only for myself but others that are living with a disability. I believe the best way to go about this goal is to serve on the City of Sacramento Disability Advisory Committee. Being active in our communities is what helps strengthen our communities and helps create a more inclusive city. I learned a long time ago that for people to know what I need to be successful, as an individual with a disability, I have to speak up about what I need. I am a mother intimately familiar with the overwhelming challenges that face the loved ones of mentally ill children. I know how almost impossible it is to find quality help, appropriate services and a proper education. In fact, it is such a frustrating experience, I founded a website to help parents just like me navigate an unwieldy system. ( I want to use my passion for the mental illness cause, the desire I have to change the way young people get help and my many years of marketing experience - - to improve the lives of Sacramento families impacted by mental health challenges. I am very familiar with all of the local and national organizations dedicated to helping those with mental illness My mental health blogs have appeared on several national sites I was a nominee for a Change Maker Award through The Child Mind Institute, NY. I am a judge for Every Mind Matter's Directing Change PSA competition Bill Mueller at Valley Vision is (was?) contemplating creating an Executive Fellowship so that I may promote my cause The Steinberg Institute also showed interest in my work I have volunteered for several political campaigns, including Bill Bradley's presidential run, where I was named chair of "Florida Women for Bill Bradley" chair, and I was a delegate to the 2000 Democratic convention It would be an honor to share my many years of experience fighting the good fight for my children to serve the people of Sacramento by aiding our city to become a progressive leader in the care of our citizens with mental illness. 58 Please state the reason(s) you would like to be a member of this city advisory body and share any additional experiance, community activities, or other qualifications that would be helpful in evaluating your application. To whom it may concern, My name is Will Cannady and I am a resident of the Pocket neighborhood here in Sacramento. Additionally I teach U.S. History at our local middle and high school entitled the School of Engineering and Sciences. I am also very involved in our local Pocket community. Some examples of my local involvement are creating a group to help establish our neighborhood's first community garden as well as starting a neighborhood crop swap. I also serve as a Lead on our local social network entitled Pocket Nextdoor. Over the last few years we have grown this network to include over 4000 of our neighbors. It is also through this network that a group of neighbors and I established the Pocket/Greenhaven Community Forum. The goal of this group is to help provide a voice for our community regarding the various issues we collectively face. One of these issues is how we can offer more support for our local elderly, aging and disabled population. As a member of the Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission, I would be in a better position to advocate for both my neighbors and other disabled residents of Sacramento. Serving on the Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission is also very important to me on personal level. My brother was born with cerebral palsy and is also a resident of the Pocket neighborhood. Seeing first hand the issues my brother faces when trying to navigate our city gives me great insight as to what daily life is like for the residents of Sacramento who have a disability. As a member of this commission I would be in a unique position of being able to use my previous experience to better understand how our city s policies affect our disabled population. Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
