1 66 XXXVIII. Armeekorps (XXXVIII Army Corps) The XXXVIII. Armeekorps was formed on January 11, 19*40, in Stettin. It fought in Belgium and France in 19*40. The Corps was designated Festungsstab 38 from April 3 to May 2k, 19*41, to prepare in East Prussia for Operation "Barbarossa" (the invasion of the Soviet Union). On May 25, 19*41, it became Generalkommando XXXVIII. Armeekorps. It participated in the eastern campaign from June 19*41 and advanced through the Baltic States to the Lake Ilmen area south of Leningrad. From April 19*42 to June 19*4*4 the Corps took part in position defense in the Volkhov River sector. It then withdrew from the Novgorod area and participated in rearguard engagements to the area south of Pskov. By October 15, 19^> "the Corps had withdrawn from Russia to Latvia and Lithuania.
