In partnership with our industry and education partners, the Air Cadet League of Canada is pleased to announce the first of a planned series of Career Expo events in support of our Air Cadets. National Courses What: Effective Speaking The Triple AAA Career Expo will be supporting Air Cadets from Squadrons across Ontario and Quebec to attend this unique event and gain insights into the companies, occupations, educators and career directions needed to pursue the quality job opportunities available throughout Canada. Where: Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa (1701 Woodroffe Ave.) When: Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 10 AM to 5 PM The National office will be assisting Squadrons with bus transportation and will be coordinating routes through parts of Ontario and Quebec. OPC Holiday Hours The OPC Office will be closed from the end of the business day on Friday, December 22, 2017 for two weeks and will re-open Monday, January 8, Please do not arrange couriered packages to be delivered within this timeframe. I n partnership with our industry and education partners, the Air Cadet League of Canada is pleased to announce the first of a planned series of Career Expo events in support of our Air Cadets. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Sunday April 15, 2018 Nepean Sports Complex 1701 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Scheduled for Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa, this event will bring together employers, associations and educators involved in aviation and aerospace sectors to interact with Air Cadets from Ontario and Quebec. 4 Changes Within the OPC Four key organizational changes were announced to the membership by way of on December 21, Changes include: Addition of 1 Regional Operations Committee (ROC)- bringing us from 13 to 14 ROCs - and the introduction of Regional Effective Speaking (RES) groups ROC meetings will be held less frequently and on an 'as-needed,' locally agreed basis and virtual meeting technology is available to be used Title of Regional Team Leader (RTL) and ROC Chairperson will change to Squadron Director (SD) and Regional Director (RD), respectively, and additional focus on Director recruitment through an application process, not a nomination process Squadron Operations Council (SOC) is being stood up for operation in Spring For more information, please refer to the information package created and uploaded to the member-only content announcements section - of our website titled, Changes Within the OPC or click here. Director and Volunteer Recruitment In the beginning of November 2017, a Director and Volunteer Recruitment Survey had been distributed to the membership. The OPC Board of Governors would like to thank everyone who has participated in the survey which has immensely assisted the facilitation of rebuilding the organizational structure. We encourage you to also consider others in your cadet experience who you feel would be a good fit to become a Regional or Squadron Director and supply us with their names to OPC Governor and Organizational Renewal Committee Chairperson, Roberta Foisy at RECRUITMENT@aircadetleague.on.ca. These roles would be a great fit for anyone retiring or leaving the CIC as their experience would also be an asset. The goal is to build a team of Squadron Directors and Regional Directors that will support and mentor each other and for all positions to be filled and in operation at full capacity in one year. 6 Top Cadet Interviews Every squadron has a Top Cadet. The Awards & Recognition Committee wants to meet them! The 2017 Ontario Cadet-of-the-Year is WO2 Louis Breithaupt. Bravo Zulu! Debating This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Ontario Provincial Air Cadet Debating Competition. Our province wide Air Cadet Debating Competition is once again set to take place at Mohawk College in Hamilton on Sunday, April 29, Effective Speaking This year s competition will be held on April 28, 2018 at Mohawk College (Hamilton, ON). The OPC Effective Speaking Program Competition Guide 2018 has been distributed to all Effective Speaking Coordinators in December. The above-noted guide and other valuable resources are available on the front-end and member-only sections of our website: OPC Net & Parent & Cadet Resources. We would like to encourage squadron staff and SSCs to engage more cadets in this awesome program, proven to help cadets develop confidence, public speaking skills and leadership, amongst many others. 8 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards Publicly Acknowledge Your SSC Members and Volunteer Staff Members! These awards are presented by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, in order to recognize volunteers for providing committed and dedicated service to an organization. Over 300 OPC members & Squadron volunteers have received the Award since These Awards make a particularly good addition to the resumes of your younger volunteers! Deadline: Thursday, January 25, 2018 If your nomination is received after the deadline, it will be considered for next year s award. Let us know! Be sure to send the OPC Office a copy of your confirmation letter, so that we can add it to your volunteers profiles in the database! Need help or advice? If you need assistance with the forms, or wish to check whether or not your volunteers are eligible or have been previously recognized. Get the Volunteer Service Form from: Submit your nomination online Adults are recognized by the length of time they ve volunteered with one organization, ranging from five to 65 years of continuous service. Youth (24 years old and under) are recognized for two or more years of continuous service. Who is eligible? An organization can nominate up to nine volunteers, with a maximum of six adults. Your nominee must be: a resident and volunteer in Ontario an active member in an organization that has existed for at least five years You cannot nominate someone: who has been paid for their volunteer work who volunteered the services as part of their regular work or professional responsibilities Selection process The Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration reviews all nominees and sends a letter to the organization to confirm their nomination has been accepted. Award presentation CONTACT John Evans The awards are presented at ceremonies across Ontario from March to June. The recipients are given a stylized trillium service pin and a personalized certificate to acknowledge their years of service. Each recipient can bring one guest and their organization can invite two representatives. 8

9 National Courses The National Courses Handbooks for 2018 have been distributed to SSC Chairpersons, OPC Directors, Squadron Commanding Officers and Zone Training Officers at the end of November. Basically, up to 10% of the PPS and GPS billets available will be for any squadron who has not had a cadet attend a PPS or GPS Summer Training in the past two years, and a cadet has qualified with a minimum overall score of 60% will be selected. Home-schooled Cadets Squadron COs/staff must advise Anne Kozich (anne.kozich@aircadetleague.on.ca) and Craig Hawkins (hawkinsfamily1326@gmail.com) if a cadet is home-schooled as an educational assessment with an interview is required. National Courses Volunteers Wanted! Scoring of the educational transcripts/report cards, and for the narratives at the OPC office during regular business hours. 10 Lottery All interim sales proceeds and ticket stubs were to be submitted to the OPC office by December 1, Final returns of sales proceeds, ticket stubs, unsold books, and payment for lost or unsold books, must be received in the OPC Office by March 31, Bonus Books Are Still Available We have a number of lottery books available at the OPC office that you qualify to sell as Bonus Books. For every bonus book sold, $35.00 will go back to the squadron. Please advise, John Evans, how many more books you would like to have and he will make sure that they are delivered via overnight courier. 13 New National Executive Director MGen (ret d) Pierre Forgues has been appointed to the position of Executive Director for the National office and will be replacing Sarah Matresky after seven years of service as Executive Director and 12 years with the League. OPC Welcomes New Financial Services Coordinator Air Cadet League of Canada, Ontario Provincial Committee is pleased to announce the addition of Jessie Nguyen to our team as the Financial Services Coordinator to further our endeavor of streamlining communications with squadrons. Jessie will be working with Nicky s guidance to provide the SSC s with the financial assistance required to maintain compliance with OPC requirements. Jessie will initially review the ACC9 s, if you have balancing problems she will be on hand to resolve them for you as well as provide assistance with historical issues. Jessie will also be billing invoices to squadrons, if you have any inquiries regarding amounts outstanding please contact her. 17 In Memorium Frederick E. Coleman: on January 4. A long-time staff member of 62 and 150 Squadrons in Hamilton, First Officer RCAF with 514 Squadron RAF. Reactivated in 1961 with 62 and 150 Hamilton Tiger Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets until retirement age in Member at large of RCAFA, Bomber Command Association of Canada and Supporter of Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Lancaster VRA and the RCAF Memorial Museum. Shane Mobbs : on March 1. Adult son of a member of the OPC Board of Governors, LCol (Ret d) Ferguson Mobbs. The Mobbs family are well-known throughout the Air Cadet community, both in Ontario and nationally. Connie Silva : on March 18. Vice-Chair for the Sponsoring Committee of 700 David Hornell VC Squadron, in Etobicoke. Recipient of an Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2014 and OPC Certificate of Merit at the 2016 OPC Annual General Meeting and conference. John Cox : on April 13. A long-time member and Chairperson of the Sponsoring Committee for 779 Black Knight Squadron in Mount Hope, as well as of the Squadron s Sponsor: 447 (City of Hamilton) Wing, RCAF Association. He was SSC Chair on three occasions when 779 was recognized with the Ed Christensen Trophy as the Top SSC in the Niagara, Hamilton & K-W Area. John personally received a Board of Governors Certificate of Recognition in 2015, the Air Cadet League Volunteer Service Medal with Bar, and an Ontario Volunteer Service Award (25-year) in Doug Vincent: on August 31. Member of 246 Squadron Sponsoring Committee in the late 1970 s. Elected Provincial Treasurer for two terms ( and ). In between those two terms he was elected Chairperson of the Ontario Provincial Committee. Doug was presented the National Certificate of Honour in 1997 and voted a Life Member of the OPC in In 2007 he received from the Ontario Provincial Government a Volunteer Service Award for 25 years. Doug was the recipient of the Ontario Provincial Committee Volunteer Service Medal in Captain Ann Johnson: on July 17. In 1991, Ann and her husband, the late Douglas Clifford (Cliff) Johnson, were the driving force behind the formation of 85 Grand valley RC(Air)CS. Ann was the Commanding Officer at 85 Grand Valley from and continued to be a strong supporter of the program. Sethuraman Seth Sundar: on September RC(Air)CS SSC Committee Member and former Chairperson, OCdt Sethuraman (Seth) Sundar. Seth had volunteered for many years as a member and Chairperson of the Sponsoring Committee for 845 Avro Arrow Squadron in Mississauga and had recently been sworn into the Officer Corps of the Canadian Forces, before his passing. He is remembered by many as a great friend and an energetic & dedicated supporter of 845 RC(Air)CS. Captain Christian George Chris Luxemburger: on September 16. Former Commanding Officer for 800 Black Forest Squadron in Mississauga from Instructor at CFB Borden prior to serving as Commanding Officer with 164 Shelburne. Charles Beatty: on October 9. Former Commanding Officer of 19 Stratford Squadron. Captain (ret d) Colin Arthur Middleton Cousens: on October 22. Initial involvement with the Air Cadet Movement began in 1960 at 295 RC(Air)CS as a Civilian Drill Instructor. Eight years thereafter, Colin assisted with the formation of 756 RC(Air)CS along with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 and Rod MacDonald.
