1 Vermont Air National Guard Newsletters, MSA Monthly features: a Commander s Column, sports, social clubs such as the Officers Wives Club news, reenlistments, help wanted listing of openings, monthly menu, monthly history, welcome to newest members of the Air Guard, promotions, roving reporter question of the month, safety, UTA schedule, and the chaplain s corner. Also, items for sale and an occasional request for German Shepard dogs to train as DoD service dogs. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, women s issues began to appear in the editions as articles and as a separate column. During the 70s, women began to integrate into the VTANG and go from oddity to integral members of the team. June 1988, Vol. 15, No. 6, page 12 (back cover) VTANG History Updated with New Mission On 1 July 1987 the Vermont Air National Guard began performing alert duty for the First Air Force while also maintaining proficiency in the air-to-ground mission for the Ninth Air Force. The air-to-ground mission ended on 31 March 88. On 1 April 1988 a Green Mountain Boy detachment began alert duty in Bangor, Maine. The approximated area of responsibility for the alert aircrews extends from Green and to New Jersey. They are ready to respond to unidentified aircraft violations of U.S. airspace, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The first intercept of Russian Bear bombers was accomplished on 20 October 87. As of May 1988 the Vermont Air National Guard has the second most intercepts of Russian bombers of all defense units. July 1988, Vol. 15, No. 7, page 1 (cover) TSgt. Raymond A.
