1 MilitaryInstallations Booklet for Fort Hunter Liggett Overview Location Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL), CA. is the largest U.S. Army Reserve Command post with approximately 165,000 acres. FHL is located in Monterey County, in the central coast of California, 150 miles south of San Francisco and 250 miles north of Los Angeles. The installation is bounded on the north by the Salinas Valley, on the east by the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, on the south by the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line and on the west by approximately 55 miles of Los Padres National Forest. In the summer months daytime temperatures may be 100 degrees or higher but soon after sunset, temperature drops rapidly and the nights are cool and pleasant. Winter temperatures are cool and frost is not uncommon. The rainy season usually is between December and February when the average annual 21-inch rainfall is expected to fall. History Fort Hunter Liggett has been an active Army installation since 1940 when the US Government purchased the land from publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, Jr. and neighboring landowners. Originally designated Hunter Liggett Military Reservation in 1941, the installation is named for Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett ( ). General Hunter Liggett commanded the 41st National Guard Division, and later, the First Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War 1. He also served as Chief of Staff for General Pershing. In 1975, the reservation was redesignated Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation. Until 1952, fort administration was under Camp Roberts authority; and, it was a sub-installation of Fort Ord until November 1993 when the installation came under United States Army Reserve Command. USAG Fort Hunter Liggett, CA, provides world class training for combat support and combat service support units of the Army Reserve, and offers excellent training opportunities to all U.S. military components and those of allied nations. It is exceptionally well suited to large-scale joint exercises. Fort Hunter Liggett is funded by the U.S. Army Reserve, under the command and control of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, based at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Fort Hunter Liggett now, as a sub-installation of Fort McCoy, WI, is operated primarily as the Army Reserve Command Western Reserve Training Center serving Active and Reserve components. At present, the installation encompasses approximately 165,000 acres. Mission Established in October 2005, the USAG Fort Hunter Liggett, CA, mission is to Provide Installation Services and Sustain Facilities to Enable Total Force Readiness. Fort Hunter Liggett's vision to become The Premier Total Force Training Center. Population Served USAG Fort Hunter Liggett provides excellent training opportunities to all U.S. military components and those of allied nations. FHL is exceptionally well suited to large-scale joint exercises. There are approximately 265 permanent civilian and military residents at FHL. However, the population can increase to upwards of 40,000 when a rotation of different military personnel, from all branches of military, come for training. There are 13,363 military retirees and 38,769 Family Members within a 40-mile radius of FHL and Parks Reserve Forces Training Area (PRAFTA, located in the Bay area). Temporary Quarters Temporary lodging is available through IHG Army Hotels and the Historic Hacienda. IHG Accommodations include kitchenettes - stove, oven, microwave, coffee pot, micro fridge, individual air conditioning/heating units and ceiling fans, high-speed internet and cable with TV, VCR and DVD players. Pets are allowed with a $75.00 nonrefundable fee for the first six days and $7.00 for each additional day. Maximum allowable weight for pets is 80 pounds. Must have shot records for the animal. Express breakfast is offered at Gibb Hall, Room 5 from 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. daily. Finger foods and refreshments are also served during the Wednesday Weekly Social. All rooms are non-smoking. This facility can house soldiers between E1-E4 double occupancy and E5 single occupancy. Each apartment has 2 bedrooms, each with standard size bed, desk w/chair, 3 drawer dresser, 2 drawer nightstand and chair, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen with stove, refrigerator, washer/dryer, dishwasher, bar stools. In general, the installation is bounded on the north by the Salinas Valley, on the east by the foothills of the Santa Lucia mountains, on the south by Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line, and on the west by approximately 55 miles of Los Padres National Forest. The distance on Mission Rd from Jolon (hoe-lone) Rd (CR G-14) to the FHL point of entry is 5 mi. The original main gate located at Mission and Jolon Rd is a 25MPH drive through. Observe all posted speed limits. You will encounter two 15mph curves before reaching the point of entry on your right. Dense fog is common during the early morning hours throughout this region. Area Population FHL is surrounded by small communities; Lockwood, population approx. 520, Bradley, population approx. 1,400. King City, population approx., 13,000 is 25 miles northeast while Paso Robles, population approx., 31,000 is 45 miles south. Cost of Living Central Coast, Calif., cost of living is rated highest in the U.S. The locality pay for DoD civilian employees is 35.15%. Pets For those living on-post there is a maximum of two pets per household. There are no quarantine requirements. Coyote sightings are common and other wild animal populations including elk, deer, hogs, and even an occasional bear or mountain lion live here. Fleas and ticks are common, please protect your pets with pest protection products. Housing Family Housing Fort Hunter Liggett has 84 Army Family Housing Units. Units include 2-4 bedroom, duplex, town homes, and single-family homes. All units have an attached 1.5 car garage with opener. Housing availability changes daily depending upon inbound personnel. It is recommended that you contact the Housing Office at /3197/2845 to obtain current status of housing availability. All personnel will need to submit a DD-1746 Application for Family Housing and a copy of their orders. DOD civilians must have a copy of your offer letter of employment and proof of dependent status to qualify for Army Family Housing at Fort Hunter Liggett. Billeting Fort Hunter Liggett has 186 Military Billeting rooms and 36 Open Bay rooms. Composition is 96 single rooms and 36 Open Bay rooms accommodating up to 1,440 personnel. Billeting availability changes daily depending upon inbound personnel. It is recommended that you contact the UPH/Billeting Office at /2644 to obtain current status of billeting availability. All personnel will need to submit a TSR-Form Training Support Request Form for Billeting and a copy of the soldier's orders for all Mobilized and/or Active Guard Reserve Soldiers requiring UPH quarters. Emergency Assistance Medical Emergencies Should you experience a medical emergency in transit, call 911 or visit the nearest hospital emergency room. When on post dial (831) does work, it is just a little slower. Calls to 911 are routed through Monterey County. Individuals who call 911 should inform 911 Dispatch they are at Ft. Hunter Liggett. FHL Fire Rescue/Medical The FHL Fire Department is an all Hazards Agency providing the residents and FHL with Fire & Emergency Services that include the following: Structural Firefighting, Airport Rescue Firefighting, Wildland Firefighting, Technical Rescue Services (Confined Space, High and Low Angle Rescue, Auto Extrication and Search and Rescue) Fire Prevention (Public Education, Fire Inspections and Fire Investigations) and Emergency Medical Services. FHL Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides the FHL community with Advanced Life Support (ALS) at the Paramedic Level. The Fire Departments staff's ambulances 24/7/365 with fully trained and certified personnel. The department operates under the Medical Control of the Monterey County Emergency Services Agency (EMSA). Under the Monterey County Protocols, FHL Fire Department personnel transport patients to the most appropriate hospital based on the patient's needs and the hospitals capabilities. In addition to the Fire Department EMS assets, Mercy Air -20 based at Tusi Airfield operates under the command and control of the Fire Department and provides Helicopter based Critical Care Transport to the FHL community. Financial Assistance Army Emergency Relief (AER) Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance in the form of no interest loans and/or grants to military Families whose resources are not sufficient to meet emergency needs. Applications for emergency financial assistance are available at the AER office located at Army Community Service, building 238 California Avenue, Room Or online at When the applicant has completed the application and gathered all supporting documentation he/she must make an appointment. Spouses who are seeking assistance while the Service member is away will need a Power of Attorney. Fort Hunter Liggett s Visitors Center (VC) is open Monday-Friday , unless otherwise posted. All visitors without a pass must report to the VC prior to the front gate; proceed to gate when not open. Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code.
