The effort continued to spread as our staff and partners in law enforcement promoted awareness of the disorder throughout the month. PUBLIC SAFETY TELCOMMUNICATORS WEEK MCSO PARTICIPATES IN DRUG TAKEBACK DAY PROJECT MEDICINE DROP SHERIFF S OFFICERS HONORED FOR ASSISTING IN ARREST ON NEW YEARS EVE BLUE MASS RECRUITS PARTICIPATE IN FOOD DRIVE MCSO SAVES WANTED CAT MONMOUTH U PAWS FOR A CAUSE A large component of that effort is through our Autism Awareness Coordinator Fran Hines, who trains members of law enforcement in Monmouth County, including public safety telecommunicators, so they are equipped with information and understand the problems associated with autism, in order to effectively assist an individual who needs help. Without this training, an individual s behavior can be misinterpreted. In addition to training, Hines initiates Project Lifesaver, a wristlet program which uses radio signals to track for individuals with autism or Alzheimer s disease if they wander

There are presently 115 children with autism on the program. We are so proud of the success and work being done with the program, that we invited family members and recipients of Project Lifesaver to the sheriff s office for a meet and greet and a tour of agency operations, during National Autism Awareness Month. They were very impressed with what they learned. One individual is non-verbal but the smile on his face proved the experience was extremely worthwhile. Another program to help ensure safety of special needs individuals is the Monmouth County Special Needs Registry, a partnership with the sheriff s office, Monmouth County Prosecutor s Office and Monmouth County Police Chiefs Association. The registry helps law enforcement and other emergency service personnel better assist residents with special needs by providing first responders with vital information about an individual. Because of the importance of these programs, both were highlighted at the Autism, Project Lifesaver and Special Needs Registry 1st Annual Forum, held April 25. It brought together project lifesaver clients, family members, the Monmouth County Sheriff s Office, the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office, the Monmouth County Office on Aging and local law enforcement. The collaborative effort enabled us to provide, share and communicate information to special needs advocates and family members of special need individuals. It s our duty to make every effort to connect with people and present them with the opportunity to learn about our programs that assist in ensuring the utmost of safety to the special needs community. Finally, at the end of the month the MCSO attended the Monmouth/ Ocean Foundation for Children s Annual Gala For Children With Autism. This is an outstanding organization, of which I m a board member. The MCSO should be proud of its commitment in keeping Autism Awareness in the forefront not only during National Autism Awareness Month, but always. Thank you all for the continued support.

The MCSO, Monmouth County Prosecutor s Office, Southern Monmouth County Active Shooter Partnership, Monmouth County Police Chiefs, fire & EMS participated in the simulated training exercise which included various scenarios to give law enforcement and first responders an opportunity to train in real-life situations in real-time. A full-range of participants faced a simulated active shooter inside the former school building. The exercise was coordinated with Critical Response Group, A Rodgers Group Company, of Ewing Township, New Jersey. These exercises are essential since we can prepare for the worst hoping our preparedness makes us the best. Did You Know Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends November 30. 4 PUBLIC SAFETY TELCOMMUNICATORS WEEK It was a great week for our Public Safety Telecommunicators as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week was commemorated from April 8 through April 15. PST week is always a great opportunity to say thank you to all the public safety telecommunicators for their hard work and commitment. These dedicated men and women are the unsung heroes of public safety and play a critical role in saving lives, but, all too often that work goes unnoticed. To commemorate the week, Freeholder Deputy Director Lillian G. Burry presented a proclamation, recognizing the PSTs at the Board of Chosen Freeholder meeting on April 11. The Monmouth County Sheriff s Office Communications Center is staffed with 114 public safety telecommunicators. The Communications Division processes more than 750,000 calls annually. MCSO PARTICIPATES IN DRUG TAKEBACK DAY Sheriff Golden was proud to announce that the MCSO collected a total of 14 pounds of prescription drugs on April 28 during National Presciption Drug Takeback Day. In addition, 22 pounds were collected from the MCSO permanent collection site the week of April 23. This effort and participation by residents helps reduce the amount of prescription drugs that are readily available to our children. That s vital since opiate and heroin abuse are often fueled by prescription drug abuse.

5 PROJECT MEDICINE DROP If you can t come to us to dispose of medications we will come to you. The MCSO mobile Project Medicine Drop was at Heritage Village in Manapalan on April 24, making it convenient for residents to dispose of unwanted medications. SHERIFF S OFFICERS HONORED FOR ASSISTING IN ARREST ON NEW YEARS EVE Sheriff s Officers Royston Hercules and Charles Welles along with six officers from the Long Branch Police Department were commended by Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider and Police Chief Jason Roebuck on April 24, for their assistance in the arrest of the suspect in the quadruple homicide on New Year s Eve. Sheriff Golden commends all for their valiant efforts during that difficult night.

6 BLUE MASS It was a time to remember fallen officers and give thanks to all members of law enforcement during the 19th Annual Catholic Diocese of Trenton s Blue Mass on April 17. Members of the MCSO Law Enforcement and Corrections divisions were in attendance, along with law enforcement throughout the state. Sheriff Golden thanks all law enforcement officers for their service and honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice. God bless them all. RECRUITS PARTICIPATE IN FOOD DRIVE Recruits from the Monmouth County Police Academy took some time out of their busy training schedule to support a great cause. The 94th Basic Course for Police Officers, the 45th Special Law Enforcement Officers Class ll and the 36th Basic Course for County Corrections Officers all participated in helping out with Monmouth County s annual Food Drive held each April to support Fulfill of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Together the three classes donated enough food to fill up six plus large boxes. Great job to all!

7 MCSO SAVES WANTED CAT A scary situation for a little kitty but thanks to Sheriff s Officers Dan Ceparano and Jason Simeone it had a purr-fect ending. Both officers were on warrant duty April 18, when they came across the kitten in Neptune who was stranded on a ledge and too scared to come down. The outcome was paw-sitive and the kitty was happily returned to the owner. MONMOUTH U PAWS FOR A CAUSE Efforts from Alpha Phi Sigma s Criminal Justice Honor Society at Monmouth University could help protect a MCSO K-9. They raised funds for the MCSO K-9 Unit during the 7th Annual Paws for a Cause on April 11. The money raised goes toward the purchase of a bullet proof K-9 vest. This extreme generosity from Monmouth U and the public has helped keep our K-9s out of harm s way. We appreciate the all the support throughout the years.

8 SHERIFF PARTICIPATES IN NJ CONFERENCE OF MAYORS Sheriff Golden participated in a panel discussion at NJ Conference of Mayors on April 27, in Atlantic City where the topic was about legalization of marijuana and how it would affect municipalities. UNTIL HELP ARRIVES Sheriff Golden wants all to be prepared should an emergency or life threatening injury occur. He was pleased to recently host FEMA s Until Help Arrives Program, presented by University Hospital. Attendees which included residents of Monmouth County, members of Middletown Public Schools and the New Jersey Department of Corrections, were taught how stay safe, use simple and effective life saving skills, communicate with public safety telecommunicators, how to stop bleeding and position the injured and ways to manage your body under stress. The MCSO looks forwards to more partnerships with EMS agencies to promote awareness of this important program.

9 MSCO PARTICIPATES IN NJ MARATHON Thanks to all of the law enforcement agencies and first responders who worked at the NJ Marathon to help maintain safety and assist the runners. The MCSO is always proud to participate in such a great event. INMATE LABOR The MCSO Inmate Labor crew assisted Clean Communities in Tinton Falls picking up litter and was also in Millstone to help out with various landscaping projects in April. Inmate labor offers much needed assistance to towns at a cost savings. EXPLORER POST LEARNS ABOUT FORENSIC CRIME The MCSO Explorer Post #1 got a firsthand look at a forensic crime scene and how an investigation is conducted on April 9. The class was held at the Situation Training And Response Simulator, STARS, building and led by Det. Stephen Vogt of the Monmouth County Prosecutor s Office. Explorer Post #1 is a proud partnership with Sheriff Golden and Neptune High School.

10 COMMUNITY AWARENESS PROGRAM Giving back to your community, that s what third grade students from the Midtown Community School, in Neptune learned about through the MCSO Community Awareness Program. Sheriff Golden presented 70 students with certificates upon completion of the program on April 17. The program offers a unique approach to community awareness initiatives by having local leaders from government, public safety, civic and social organizations visit the school and talk to students about how they can contribute presently and in the future to the community in which they live. HIGH SCHOOL TOURS Students from St. John Vianney and Neptune High School visited the MCSO in April where they were presented with an overview and tour of operations. Sheriff Golden is always happy to mentor students, some who may one day be future leaders in law enforcement.

11 MCSO PARTICIPATES IN COLLEGE FAIRS The MCSO is also always eager to mentor college students. Members of the Law Enforcement, Corrections and Communications Divisions recently participated in job fairs at Monmouth University and Brookdale Community College to discuss opportunities and give advice. DOG WALK K-9 Ari strutted around the Monmouth County SPCAs Dog Walk at Brookdale Community College on April 28, where he and S/O Jay Aretino presented a K-9 Demo.

12 TAKE YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY Thanks to all the staff who helped make Take Your Child to Work Day such a success on April 26.
