Chief Steven Westermann, International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients The IAFC Foundation, promoting higher education and research in the fire services, is pleased to announce the recipients of the Foundation s 2012 Scholarships. The John M. Buckman, III Award goes to Firefighter/ Paramedic/Training Division Chief Todd Van Scoy, Cities of Burlington & West Burlington Fire Departments in IA. The Chief Charles A. Chet Henry Memorial Scholarship Award, made possible with support from VFIS, for exceptional commitment to public service goes to Fire Chief Andrew Schaffran with the Thurston Co. Fire District 16 and the Battalion Chief with East Olympia Fire District 6 in WA. The Garry L Briese Scholarship Award, made possible with support from the Motorola Foundation, goes to Firefighter/Medic David Curtis with the Homer Township Fire Protection District in IL. The Heather Westphal Memorial Scholarship Award benefiting women in the fire service, created in honor of IAFC s Membership Marketing Manager is going to Division Chief of Training & Standards Susanna Schmitt Williams with the Jacksonville Fire Department in NC. The IAFC s Federal Military Section sponsored award goes to Lieutenant Bryan West with Fort Leonard Wood Fire & Emergency Services in MO Awards Continued on Page 4

2 President s Message As you know, we live in an increasingly complex and potentially dangerous world. Whether it is natural disasters, car accidents, fires or medical emergencies, our communities rely on fire and emergency service personnel to protect them. The International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation (IAFCF) is dedicated to supporting these first responders through the administration of our scholarship program. Each year the IAFCF provides scholarships to well deserving career and volunteer fire and emergency service personnel who are enrolled in college coursework or other academic programs that will help them further their fire service education. Unfortunately each year the IAFC Foundation also has to turn down scholarship applications from other well deserving individuals due to a lack of available funds. You can help us change that - with your financial support the IAFCF will be able to fund additional scholarships and make a real difference in a first responder s life. During these challenging economic times, many departments across the country no longer offer tuition reimbursement which means many dedicated fire and emergency service men and women have to cover 100% of their own education expenses or seek funding assistance from other sources. Now more than ever, the financial support of an IAFC Foundation scholarship may mean the difference between someone continuing with their studies or putting them on hold for financial reasons. The personal stories from past scholarship recipients included in this brochure clearly demonstrate how an IAFC Foundation scholarship can help individuals reach their career goals. By completing the donation form on the last page of this brochure you will help the IAFC Foundation meet its goal of awarding scholarships to a larger number of fire and emergency services personnel. Together the Foundation and Motorola have demonstrated their commitment to a well-educated, trained, versatile fire and emergency service, said IAFC Foundation President and President/CEO of Glatfelter Insurance Group Tony Campisi. Aligning with Motorola Solutions purpose to help people be their best in the moments that matter, the Motorola Solutions Foundation is honored to support first responders and their families through program funding that bolster safety and education, said Matt Blakely, director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. Through the Public Safety Grants, we partner with programs like the IAFC Foundation to ensure first responders have access to the necessary tools and resources they need to succeed.
